Chapter 21

The pain in my chest was mounting, it felt like the night we found out that dad died like my chest stopped moving on its own, trying to convince itself that if it didn’t breathe, it couldn’t feel pain, but when I took the next breath, all the pain that had mounted would flood in and spread through my whole body. 

I could hear a clicking sound behind me, right before a small voice called out for me to wait. When I turned around, Lilly was trying to catch up to me, and when she got close she wrapped a coat around me and helped me walk, asking me where the house was but we didn’t have far to go. She helped me inside and down to my room, putting a bottle of water by the bed as she sat on the edge of it and stroked the hair out of my face before she ran her hands up and down my back lightly.
