Mom's visit

Amy

I am so anxious to when my mom calls me telling me that she is already in town. The seminar is supposed to be ending at five in the evening. She says she will come to my apartment immediately after. I am so excited and nervous. I am just a bundle of nerves and I am afraid I will mess up. I have everything ready for her. I have already cleaned up and organized the entire apartment for her arrival. I really want to show my mom that I am now a grown and independent woman. I just want her to be proud of me.

The knock on the door gets me to halt in my tracks. I am in the kitchen getting everything ready with the meal. I have already finished preparing and the only thing left is setting up the table and serving. I ran hastily to the door and take a deep breath before opening it. I don't want to appear a nervous mess when my mom sees me, but I am just too excited.

"Mom!" I cry out as I engulf her in a tight bear hug.

"Amy, sweetie," she smiles sweetly at me and the entire room heats up with life. Just like in the old days as a teenager when I would welcome mom from work.

"You look gorgeous, mom," I complement as I break from the jug to take in the full sight of her.

"You don't look bad yourself, dear," she eyes me with proud motherly eyes.

"Oh, stop it mom," I can't help the grin my face breaks into.

"You're a beautiful lady so take the complement as it comes," my mom never seizes to impress me with her words. I missed her so much.

She walks into the living room. Her eyes wonder around the place to take in it's full view.

"You have an amazing space over here," she says.

"I know that it is small but I am saving for a bigger apartment," I tell her.

"You worry yourself too much. I mean you are one person. You don't need a lot of space where your voice will echo when you cough," she says.

"You are right. I will stay in this one for now," I laugh and she joins me.

My face feels warm because all I have been doing is smiling and laughing since mom arrived. She is really the good company that I have been craving. I lead her to the kitchen and show her what I have prepared. She gasps in shock.

"Oh, my. So much food. Is this feast all for me or there are also some invited guests?"

"No, mom. I prepared it all for you," I reply.

"Really?"

"I was so anxious about what you would and wouldn't want to eat so I prepared a variety," I say.

"That is so nice of you, dear. If I know you were going through all this, I would have wrapped up a gift for you," she says.

"No, am fine. I just want you to feel comfortable."

"I am always comfortable when I am around you," she gives me another of her sweet smiles.

"Thanks, mom," I lean into her chest and she gives me a short warm hug.

"Now let's get eating this banquet before it gets cold," she announces and I can't help but laugh.

After having the food and clearing the table, my mom goes to freshen up in the bathroom. I check through the DVDS I have for a nice movie that I can watch with her to pass time. I used to like watching movies with mom. It was always a fun experience when she would make sassy and funny comments about the characters. That is why I end up chosing a romantic comedy movie.

As I sit on the couch waiting for mom, my mind drifts to Jace. I haven't seen him since Monday night, but we have been talking on the phone. We text a lot but it is not the same as having him near me. I miss his hands on me as well as his lips. I almost ran to his house yesterday when I couldn't take it anymore. My body just needs him to be around all the time. I just can't fathom the reason why. Jace then texted me asking me how I was doing. I texted him saying that I miss him and I really want to see him soon, but he told me he was running errands. He didn't tell what the errands were about, and I didn't ask. Hell, I don't even know what he does for a living. Though he has such a big beautiful house and an expensive car, he has never talked to me about his work.

I get my phone and check for a text from him. He hasn't texted me since morning. I would have run crazy checking my phone every second for his text, but my mind was occupied with mom's visit.

Me: Hi. Mom has already come. We had some food and we are going to watch a movie.

I send the message and stare at the phone waiting for his reply. He always replies immediately, but I stare the phone until my eyes hurt.

Me: How was your day? How are the errands going?

I hope he replies soon. He must be really busy. I don't want to think that he is ignoring me. After waiting in vain, I place my phone on the table and lean into the couch. I remember when he said he would want to meet my mother. Should I tell mom about him?

"Someone is thinking hard," mom says as she enters the living room. I just give her a small smile.

"Who is occupying that mind of yours?" she asks while taking a sit beside me on the couch.

"It is just the new assignments from work," I lie. She gives me an i-don't-believe-you-at-all look.

"And you think I am going to believe that?" she raises an eyebrow at me.

"Okay," I sigh resignedly.

"He is Jace," I confess and her face lights up. "We haven't been together for long," I add.

"I can see that," she says. "What has Jace done this time?"

"Nothing. We talk a lot. He is either around or on phone. I haven't heard anything from him since morning," I tell her.

"And you are worried that he is ignoring you?"

"I don't know. I think he is just busy," I don't want to have negative thoughts at this moment.

"Don't worry. It's just been hours. I am sure he will try getting in touch soon," she gives my hand a reassuring squeeze.

"Thanks, mom," I really appreciate her being around at this moment or else my thoughts would be driving me nuts.

"It's nothing, dear," she waves me off with a smile. I feel more hopeful now.

"How are things between you and Bruce?" I ask to change the subject. Her face beams with a satisfied smile at the mention of his name.

"We are doing great. He is planning on buying a house so that we can live together," she says.

"You are moving in with him?" I wonder. I never knew their relationship was that serious.

"Yes, but not now. We are taking our time choosing a good house first," she responds.

"Bruce is really a serious guy. I know he will take good care of you."

"Oh, I will make sure I tell him how much you approve of him," I can't believe my mother is blushing in front of me.

"Please do. All I want is the best for the both of you," I tell her.

"Thanks sweetie," she says.

"Now let's get on with the movie plans!" I announce and grab the remote.

Through out the movie, Jace is at the top of my mind. I check my phone but there isn't anything from him. I hope he is okay. I am really worried about him. My mother notices me and gives me a sad smile. She is just here for the night so I should make the entire time about her. I switch off my phone and go back to the movie. Mom is so dramatic as usual, making funny comments about the movie which helps me not to think about Jace for some time.
