My eyes widened in surprise. Mr Drey. I hadn't seem him all week and now that I was, I was on all fours on the floor.
Realising I wasn't in the best position my employer should find me, I quickly scrambled to my feet, dusting myself.
"I uhm... I was looking for uhm...a flash drive fell."
"That doesn't explain why you're on my floor." Oh, that floor. Wait, was I not supposed to be on this floor?
"I had no idea I wasn't supposed to be here. I was told you requested a progress report." His face scrunched up in confusion.
"I did?"
"Yeah. Jeni said - oh." Realisation dawning on me. "Nevermind." The she-devil. She had sent me on a fool's errand.
"I'll be on my way now." My body itching to increase the distance between us. I hated him with every fibre of my being but I still feared him as my boss regardless. I turned around.
"Is this what you were looking for?"
He held the flashdrive in his hands.
"Yes." I replied going to get it from him but he raised his hands out of my reach.
The movement causing me to be too close to him so, I stepped back.
"I guess you're as clumsy as you are on the dance floor"
My jaw slackened in shock. I never expected that he'd ever bring it up or that he'd even remember but he did and he did.
How dare he make fun of me? I bristled, my ears turning red out of embarrassment. I snatched the drive out of his hands, ignoring the goosebumps that coated my flesh on contact.
He chuckled lightly as I briskly walked away, my ears burning from the sound.
Later that day, Jeni was called to his office. Apparently, newbies and team members were not allowed on the CEO's floor. Only Team leads and very important guests.
She came back red in the face and I took the brunt of it.
I had asked for work earlier and she gave me butt loads of it
She dumped every design file she could find on my desk asking me to redesign the MOD file starting from the wire frame to the final design.
It took the entire team months to do it and she only gave me less than a week to do it.
If only I learned to keep my big mouth shut.
The next design meeting with Mr Drey was on Friday, a week from now. I looked at my calendar and cleared everything I had previously planned with Thea.
I rolled up my sleeves and tied up my hair, starting with the app idea directly from the CEO. As I read on, I realised Mr Drey wasn't just a figure head. He was quite intelligent and passion driven. I still hated him but now I respected him and I decided. I wouldn't make light of his efforts and sacrifices. So, I worked hard throughout the weekend and the week after.
Thea had checked in on me a couple of times, especially during the weekend.
"Won't you at least shower? Or eat?"
She pinched her nose, swaying her hands around.
"I'm pretty sure I don't smell that bad." I took a sniff of my pits and I almost knocked myself out cold.
I had so much to do and everything else just seemed like a waste of time. This was an opportunity to prove myself and I would give it my best but right now, I was the walking dead. My hair was a bird's nest and my clothes needed changing.
I took a much needed shower and ate some food. Feeling much refreshed, I got back to work.
By Thursday, I had huge bags under my eyes. My dark circles were already covered, much thanks to Thea but nothing could hide the bags. Thea had also given up on styling me since the first week so, I almost looked homeless in a grey t-shirt and slightly baggy jeans.
"Look what the cat dragged in." Jeni had been taunting me for days and I took it all in because I was going to wipe that smirk off her face when I submitted my work.
I searched my bag and brought out the presentation file for the project and the flash drive for the actual designs. There was a momentary shock on her face she couldn't mask when she saw what was in my hands and I revelled in it.
She collected it from my hands so rudely I thought the papers were going to tear off. She didn't check either. Instead, she kept it in her desk and locked it up.
"Won't you read it?"
"Won't you get out of my face?"
I squeezed my hands in anger. All my work, my sleepless nights. My palms itched to mark her face. I wasn't the violent type but Jeni brought out the worst in me.
I turned and walked back to my desk. There had to be a way to report her without me getting in much trouble and I'd find it. I wasn't the only one she treated as such but it was way worse with me.
There was a scowl etched on my face throughout the day. I only got through it thinking of the weekend. I promised myself the best sleep of my life.

Friday had everyone running around in circles. We all dreaded this meeting. Mr Drey was already pissed from the morning. Some deal had fallen through with one of his investors. Apparently, one of his competitors had bought the investor over causing Mr Drey to lose some money and he wasn't happy about it. That was putting it lightly. He had already fired someone on the 28th floor and it was likely someone else was next.
"I'll come for your heads if you fail me today." Alfred said pointing to no one in particular and everyone at the same time.
We all walked to the elevator in trepidation. Jeni had already run us through most of it as she'd be the one doing the presentation. All we had to do was agree with her.
Mr Drey was already in the conference room by the time we got there. This only elevated the tension in the air. We were twice as quick in setting everything up. He only grew more impatient as Jeni tried her hardest best to impress him. Even flashing her pretty smile every once in a while. Too once in a while if you asked me.
Mr Drey's fingers tapped the table like a time bomb waiting to explode.
"So, this is something I personally worked on throughout the week and weekend, losing a lot of sleep sir" She giggled. Was she about to do what I thought she was about to do?
Oh no, this fudging bridge didn't.
The screen changed to my design and I screamed internally.
She hadn’t even tried to be subtle to use my idea. She used the entire presentation verbatim, only changing my name. She obviously had no shame. The finger tapping had stopped. Mr Drey’s eyes zeroed in on the screen. “What is this?” “Just something I came up with sir.” Jeni smiled nervously. As she should. The fudging liar. I hated that I could not swear without feeling uncomfortable but slowing, this girl was changing everything about me. “You came up with this?” It was hard to tell what he was thinking but I assumed there was an atom of disbelief on his face. There were murmurs all around. People whispering quietly beside me. He changed the file in his hands to the one she extended towards him and flipped through. There was a slight relaxation of his brows. That must’ve meant something good. “She did that? Wow. No wonder she’s the team lead.” Someone who was seated right next to me said. No, she didn’t. I did. Me. Mr Drey motioned for her to continue and the room quieted. Sh
My name was boldly typed across the screen on the last part of the presentation. I couldn't believe she didn’t edit that last part or cut it out. If you were going to steal from someone, then you should be wise enough not to leave your prints. Thievery101 people. Now I was in a tight position. No matter how badly she behaved towards me, I couldn’t out her like that because I was either going to get her fired or demote her. Even in the tech world, snitches also got stitches. I was still healing from Jaskey Technologies so, I decided to play dumb. It was the biggest mistake of my life. “What about it?” “What about it?” He scoffed. “Why is your name on here?” “I was trying to play a big prank on Jeni. She’d been messing a little with me all week.” “Really?” Not even believing me for a second. I nodded. Not trusting myself to say anything further. I was a terrible liar. I made the mistake of looking directly into his eyes. His deep blue eyes drew me in, making me flustered. I felt und
The light flicked on mid scream. My voice stopped short at the sight."Mr Drey?" There was a scared and distressed look on his face. Most likely from my fright."Why did you scream?" He left the door post and walked forward."You scared me. I was supposed to be the only one on this floor." I placed my hand on my racing heart."Why are you still here? And in the dark at..." He looked at his wrist"...9pm?""There was so much to do and I didn't want to leave without completing the icons." He sighed a long sigh. He motioned to the laptop."Let me see what you've done so far."My heart jumped to my throat as I swallowed nervously."Uhm... how about I show you tomorrow?" He was confused"Why tomorrow? You're here now." He made total sense but as he moved closer, all I could think about was how he smelled and the fact that only two of us were probably left in the building asides security. He had ditched his suit for
"Please come up to the first floor." The secretary had said. The ride to the first floor had me thinking about every life choice that had led me up to this point. I scrambled my brain trying to look for what I might've done wrong and if it was related to the commotion happening on apparently, every floor.I didn't have to wonder for much longer. I had reached the first floor.I walked up to the secretary and she asked me to hold on till Mr Drey was ready.Five minutes later I was called into his office."Miss Victoria, you're here. Please have a seat." Josh was nowhere to be found this time as I looked around.Mr Drey seemed to be in a chipper mood, only confusing me further.Without wasting time, he dropped the exact shoe I was dreading."You'll be taking over the design team as the team leader.""Wh..what?" I stuttered, my brain finding it difficult to catch up."What do you mean team leader? What about Jeni?" When I came to think a
I froze. I hadn't heard from him in at least 6 months so, there was absolutely no reason for him to call me. The phone stopped ringing. Maybe it was a mistake. I walked into my room and slumped on the bed. My phone rang again and this thing, I answered the call. I didn't mutter a word and waited for him to speak."Hey!" Michael had always had a hold on me. I had loved his soft voice. The gentle way with which he spoke. I had fallen for him almost immediately but then I remembered what he did. Who he did. He had no right to sound so chipper over the phone."Yes?" "You okay?""Yes." He was only going to get one worded answers from me.He chuckled as if nothing affected him. As if he wasn't in the wrong. As if my feelings never mattered."You're moody as usual." I could hear him smile over the phone and tongue cut loose."What do you want?" Anger apparent in my tone."Chill!" He chuckled again. I was seconds away from smashing my phone."I just wanted to check up on you and invite you t
The MOD app had taken the world by storm and we were recording numbers we never imagined. It was a huge success."Damn girl! I knew you could do it" Thea yelled over the noise in the club. She'd thought it was something worth celebrating and so, we found ourselves at the club, on a typical friday night.I peered around trying to be subtle as possible. Thea gasped beside me, a sly smile on her face."You're looking for him, aren't you?" "What? Pfft. No!" I said a little too quickly."You are. Oh my God. You like him!" I shushed her."No, I don't. I was just looking around.""Yeah, for him." I rolled my eyes and asked her to drop it. There was a one in a million chance that he was actually going to come around. He didn't and I didn't want to admit to myself that I was actually disappointed. I had to distance myself from him. I had to forget every brush of his skin on my skin. Every smile he had given me because he didn't like me. He was only appreciative of my work. I groaned as I drag
“I don’t think you did it” My hands froze over the door handle.“You don’t?” I sniffled. Darn it! I promised myself I wasn’t going to cry. I turned back and looked at him and I could swear his eyes softened a bit. I wiped my face quickly.“The hell is wrong with you man? Here.” Josh handed me a tissue. I muttered a thank you and sat down. “I’m not sure who did it but I’ll find out.” His jaw locked.I tried to think hard on who could’ve done it but I came up short. Josh rubbed my shoulder and whispered in my ears.“Don’t mind him. He’s been irritable lately because he hasn’t had a woman in years.” My nose scrunched up in disgust.“Ew!” I smacked his arm. I didn’t need to know that. Mr Drey’s eyes locked on Josh’s arm across my shoulders and I felt the urge to move it away. I didn’t. I stared at him instead. He was acting like a girl on her period. One minute he was fine, the next, he was angry. Josh didn’t notice him glaring daggers at him. As usual, he was always oblivious to his sur
“Dara, would you mind if I put you in charge of the team of the team today?” I spared a glance at her as I hurriedly stuffed my bag with work materials and everything I couldn’t take from home for an impromptu trip with Kol. Dara had been the most supportive and she had mad skills in design. She was capable of handling the team. All she needed was to be bolder and this task was supposed to help her do that. Her eyes bulged behind her glasses making her look funny. Those lenses were quite thick. “I’m sorry to spring this up on you last minutes but I believe in you. You can do it.” I cheered her on as I picked up my bag. To ease her stress, I asked for the team to cooperate with her and that if she had any issues with any of them or any at all, she shouldn’t hesitate to reach out to me. I had no idea where we were going. Only that we were going somewhere far. Kol’s call had woken me up so early in the morning. “Be ready by 10, we’ll be leaving for the airport. There is a global tech
