Chapter 9

Kathryn hoped that the security guard hadn't betrayed them. However, seeing that Markus was asking her these questions, did it mean that Chris was still oblivious to the truth?

She looked at Markus with uncertainty, but the man's expression was too difficult to read. He was similar to Chris in this respect. She didn't know why he'd cornered her with such questions.

Markus went to flick his cigarette, then asked, "Mr. Albert handed you the pendant that was left in his room that night, didn't he? Where is it?"

The pendant was something her grandmother had left her before she'd passed away. Kathryn had always worn it around her neck. However, after that night, she hadn't dared to wear it out in public again. Instead, she kept it in a box, where she stored most of her important belongings.

Kathryn's palms began to sweat nervously. "I thought it might've belonged to the previous occupant and didn't think it was important. I don't know where I left it."

She didn't dare lie about having given the pendant to the hotel's front desk. If Chris was serious about looking for the woman from that night, Markus would definitely be tasked with calling the hotel to ask about it.

After hearing her answer, Markus replied, "Then please keep a lookout for it. That pendant's really important now."

Kathryn's breathing quickened. She dared not say that she didn't know where it was anymore. It might've just been her imagination, but she thought that the solemn expression Markus was sporting today could rival Chris' usual demeanor. Realizing there was no way out, Kathryn could only force herself to nod.

She didn't know how she'd ended up walking out of Markus' office in one piece. Upon reaching her own desk, she forced herself to calm down, but Markus' solemn tone and expression from before kept her from doing so.

Judging by how serious he'd been, she could tell that Chris was determined to seek out the woman from that night.

Kathryn was at a loss. She didn't know what to do. She picked up her phone and sent a message to Tally. She typed, "Tally, I feel like we're done for!"

"You're the one who's doomed, not me," Tally replied quickly. Even through the screen, Kathryn could sense that Tally was doing her best to distance herself from her mess.

Before she could reply, Tally sent another message that read, "Remember. You had nothing to do with what happened that night with Mr. Albert. Don't forget, and delete our chat history right away."

After writing Kathryn the reminders, Tally instructed her to erase all possible evidence. Kathryn didn't know how to respond. After seeing Tally's reply, she felt even more frustrated.

Feeling anxious and fearful, Kathryn did her best to focus on her work, but she couldn't do it no matter how hard she tried. She only managed to snap back to her senses when she spotted Chris walking out of the meeting room. Seeing his gloomy expression, her expression turned solemn as well.

She stood up and reported respectfully, "Mr. Albert, I've placed the report on your desk."

Chris shot her a cold glance without uttering a single word. Kathryn met his gaze for a short second before quickly breaking eye contact by lowering her head.

Chris' expressions darkened further when he saw how afraid she still was of him. In the end, he walked into his office without saying anything else.

The finance manager rushed into Chris' office soon after, and a barrage of cursing could be heard coming from inside.

Kathryn watched the closed office door nervously and felt bad for the finance manager. To be honest, she pitied herself more.

Eventually, the finance manager walked out of Chris' office looking disheveled. Kathryn averted her gaze quickly and pretended to be busy with her own work.

The finance manager eventually approached her. "Ms. Michaels, Mr. Albert wants to see you in his office," he said.

"Alright." Upon hearing that Chris wanted to see her, Kathryn's heart started to quicken from fear, but she quickly got up and walked into his office as requested.

The tension in the room was palpable. Kathryn clenched her hands tightly and took a cautious step forward. "Mr. Albert, you wanted to see me?" she asked.

"Has Markus spoken to you?"

Kathryn's breath hitched at that. She tightened her clenched fists even more. Thinking about how she'd successfully deceived him the other day, Kathryn felt like she was truly finished this time and was going to be found out.

She knew that what she did couldn't be swept under the rug without consequences. She nodded nervously. "Yes, he did."

"From now on, you'll work with him to find out exactly what happened that night. You'll be able to learn something from him."

Kathryn trembled after hearing that. Was Chris indirectly telling her to confess or something? She looked up cautiously, only to meet Chris' gaze, which seemed deep and profound.

She figured that she must've been wrong. After all, why would someone as busy as Mr. Albert have time to joke around with her like this?
