I froze, mind racing to come up with an excuse. “Oh, uh, I forgot something in Kaden’s bedroom last night after I came to thank him. I just came to pick it up.”

My mom raised an eyebrow but didn’t press further. Instead she reached out and brushed my hair with her fingertips, smiling knowingly. “You were always such a rough sleeper”

I shrugged, feeling my cheeks burn. “Yeah, guess I just toss and turn.”

“I wish I could stick around town longer but your father and I have a flight to catch.It is such a shame most of your clothing got all burned up. I’d love to take you shopping to replace some things, but I don’t have the time.”

I hastily replied, “No, it’s fine, you don’t need to worry about me. You should get to the airport. Have a great trip.”
