Chapter 2

With the clock ticking away, Sarah sat in Melross's waiting room watching the employees and models as they came and went.

The setting was upscale, and everyone was dressed to the digits.

She noticed she was underdressed after giving herself a good look. She now understood why the human resources division gave her a weird look and told her to wait in the waiting room.

According to HR, she was not being interviewed by them, but by the boss. When she attempted to clarify what they meant by "boss," she was yelled at and told to go and wait in the waiting room. She could not comprehend what they meant by that.

As she sat there checking her watch, nearly two hours passed with no call to the interview.

She began to suspect that the interview was staged and that someone was trying to make a joke out of her.

She looked around then at the watch again in irritation back and forth until she decided to wait another additional hour.

As the hour passed like melting snow, she got up and went inside the HR department, furious.

The company clearly had a bad time keeping management but she was not going to wait any longer. She was desperate for a Job but not an idiot.

She walked into the HR's office and asked, "Please excuse me, I've been waiting for three hours," She tried to explain herself.

The harsh lady answered, "Leave if you can't wait, we have a waiting list."

Sarah was struck numb and taken aback, to put it mildly. Thoughts of insults flooded her mind, but she forced herself not to focus on the sadist in front of her.

She stormed out of the office in full flames. Her final shot at finding a job fell into a pit which was better than finding herself in prison if she reacted to the woman's harsh words.

She tried to calm herself down as she walked into the elevator and pressed a button but a shoe blocked the elevator door.

She followed her eyes from the shoe all the way up to a very handsome young man. He entered the elevator without looking around or at her; instead, he stood in a corner, staring intently at the tablet in his hand.

Because he didn't hit a button, she assumed he was leaving the building too. She kept staring at him and struggled to avoid admiring his delicate features.

Chelsea's warning popped up in her head as a flush of embarrassment hit her.

The man asked, still staring at his tablet, "Are you pleased with what you are seeing?"

Without thinking, she responded, "Are all the employees in this building complete morons!"

The man finally turned to face her and grinned.

He was very good-looking, tall with gorgeous gray eyes and thick dark hair. And his whole package came with arrogance, something she was accustomed to reading in novels and seeing on television.

"I guess you are not a moron, and you will not join the team?" the man asked, having recognized her from her application.

"What?" Sarah was confused.

"Sarah Norwells? Right?" He asked.

Sarah nodded.

"Next time you apply for a job, look into who owns the company," he suggested before returning to his tablet.

As Sarah moved a step behind, she felt her knees weaken. "You..."

"I own half of the business, Liam Klein, and yes, I was meant to interview you three hours ago, but I had an urgent thing to take care of instead," he said.

"Sir! I….I.." Sarah felt her stomach surmount.

The elevator stopped and two employees walked in but the second they recognized Liam, they apologized and hurried out of the elevator.

Sarah's mouth dropped agape. The man was indeed the boss, therefore he wasn't joking.

She froze, unsure of whether to cry or fall to her knees and beg for mercy from the man.

"Please accept my apologies, sir. I wasn't intending to… " She tried to explain but Liam cut her off and halted the elevator.

But Sarah was not the type to give up easily.

"I need this work, pls…" She made an effort to emphasize, "I can work over time and I am a diligent worker."

She could not believe how stupid she was,  her mouth was always her greatest enemy.

Liam looked away, showing no interest. This forced Sarah to follow him as he exited the elevator.

She begged the man, "Sir, please interview me and you will see that I am very competent." She pleaded, "Please sir, I will do anything you instruct," she begged.

All she could think about was the pain of having to tell her friend how she screwed the interview.

Liam eventually stopped since her pleading was attracting a lot of attention.

"You mean anything?" he questioned.

"Yes...yes yes," Sarah replied, on the edge of weeping.

He continued, "The company needs a secretary. In fact, my brother needs a secretary, and not me."

Sarah asked, perplexed, "What?"

Liam moved closer to her and said, "The job entails you reporting to me anything that my brother does," he explained, "So if you're not capable of that, stop following me," he added and then walked away.

Sarah scratched her head, her instincts told her to follow the man, but his final sentence confused her.

She also kept in mind that she was in a dire situation; perhaps if he explained, she would understand; so she chased after him all the way to what seemed to be an office.

Despite knowing that she was following him, Liam did not stop or turn. He had already spotted the desperation in her eyes, the desperation that he needed.

He finally said, "Take a seat."

Compared to the elevator, his tone was more serious.

He removed a contract from the drawer and placed it in front of her.

Sarah stared at the contract

He said, "Sign that, and work starts tomorrow."

Sarah read the entire contract, word for word.

"Am I understanding you correctly?" She enquired after she was done.

"Yes, you must inform me of anything that takes place in my brother's office," he replied. "And you'll get paid twice as much as the secretary does," he continued.

Sarah's jaw dropped, "You mean spy on your brother?"

Liam smiled on the other hand and went on to explain; "Because of my brother's disability, I have to watch everything he does so that he does not ruin the company."

"Disabled?" Sarah pondered the details of what was happening.

"I can't fire him because he owns half the business, but as the younger brother, I have to take care of him because he is in a wheelchair and depressed."

Sarah kept staring at him out of words.

Liam stood up and said, "You are free to say no, and I can get the next candidate."

"No, no wait, in short, all I have to do is report to you when he is having meetings or his schedule?"

"Yes, nothing illegal," Liam assured her.

Sarah once more glanced through the contract.

"Miss Norwell, are you signing or not? I do not have time," Liam urged.

Without thinking twice, Sarah signed the contract.

She was in no situation to overthink and she already insulted the man, but he was being kind and had already offered a sizable sum of money for information on what was happening with his paralyzed brother.

Before Sarah could reconsider, Liam grinned, seized the document with haste, and ordered her to follow him back to the top floor.

"Come, let me go and introduce you to my brother," he announced.

"What? Am I starting work today?" Sarah ran after him.

"Yes, you start now," Liam smiled and led her to the elevator.

Sarah walked into the elevator, and for unknown reasons, her heart began beating very fast.

The elevator stopped on the top floor, and Liam led the way to his brother's office. He knew Ezra was going to be pissed at him for hiring a secretary when he had clearly stated he did not need one.

He arrived at the door and put on a smirk before entering the office.

Ezra had just arrived in the office and his concentration was on the papers in his hands.

"Hello, big bro, your new secretary has reported for work," Liam announced but received no response.

"Her name is Sarah. Be kind to her," he said out loud.

Ezra was intentionally ignoring him and went on with scanning his papers. The mocking from early in the morning was still fresh.

Sarah, who was stuck at the door, walked in and noticed the man with thick dark hair seated in a wheelchair, pretending to have not heard them walk in.

"I'll let you two introduce yourselves," Liam remarked, leaving the office with haste.

Sarah made an attempt to stop him, but he had already left.

She turned around to find the man still hunched over his papers. From where she was standing, he appeared normal, unlike the overweight and depressed person she had anticipated.

She introduced herself after clearing her throat.

She waved, "Hello, my name is Sarah Norwells," in an effort to catch his eye.

Ezra halted at the mention of her name, the sound of his surroundings pausing. The visage that had been stalking his nightmares greeted him as he slowly moved to look up.

Sarah recognized him as well and gasped in fear as she let go of all the things she was clutching.
