I advanced to the classroom and saw something that scared me. It was one of those poisonous spiders, with its shiny yellow and black body. I had almost forgotten how dangerous this country was. As I thought about what to do, the spider inched toward me, as if it knew how scared I was. I couldn't allow myself to be paralyzed by fear; I had to act fast. I froze because those things scared me, at that moment Kessler appeared and looked at my scared face.
"What's wrong with you, girl? do spiders scare you?" I nodded and he smiled "don't worry, spiders are not dangerous here, they are not really poisonous. I myself accustomed them to my presence, so you don't have to fear them" Kessler approached the spider and took it in his hand, I moved away from them. He laughed and told me not to hurt him. Now I understood why Kessler wasn't afraid of spiders, but I was still very scared. He took her out the window and I could breathe with relief, I had realized that I had started a normal conversation with him. Kessler had taught me that we should not fear things that are unknown to us, but rather learn from them. Although spiders are dangerous, he showed us that we can live in harmony with them."I'm leaving," I told him, walking into the classroom."Thank you would be nice," he murmured mockingly. I rolled my eyes and moved to a place near the window. The students were just entering, I was wondering if I would make a friend here. Or maybe better not, so as not to have to deal with something else that was alien to me. However, someone approached me, sitting next to me. She was a red-haired, thin and pretty girl. She smiled at me so I smiled back."Hello," she said quietly. "I'm Charlotte, but you can call me Lottie. I study biology and I also really like animals."I was surprised by her confidence in me but I was not upset. I liked Lottie."I'm Eva," I introduced myself, pulling out my notes. I glanced around the class and sighed. "And what course are you studying?" I asked Lottie."Biology and anatomy, we have several classes together. You're the new girl I guess, someone like you doesn't go unnoticed" she smiled at me. I thanked her for the compliment. I didn't expect it to be so easy to make friends in this place. The class went by very quickly and as soon as the bell rang, Lottie got up to leave."We have to go, but do you want to meet up later?" I wonder."What time?" I replied."At ten o'clock in the library?" She suggested."Okay, see you then." I got to the library a little before ten and sat down at a table near the entrance to wait for Lottie. After a few minutes, she arrived and sat across from me with a book in her hand."How was your day?" She wonder."Well, I'm tired but I like school," I answered honestly. Lottie smiled and opened her book."And how about your classes? You like them?" I nodded and opened my book as well. I was tired after a long day of school, but I didn't want to leave yet. I liked being with Lottie, she was fun and easy to talk to. It seemed like we had been friends for a long time. At that moment Kessler entered the library and the same girl who kissed him, I went rigid at that moment, I don't know why but it bothered me to see them together, I don't like the girl.Kessler sat down at Lottie's table and she smiled at me. I felt more uncomfortable than ever, I didn't want to be there, but I didn't want to leave either. The girl asked Lottie if she could come over to her house after the library, Lottie nodded and I got up. "You go?" Lottie asked me. I nodded my head and told her I had to go. I left the library and was relieved to be out of there. I don't know why, but seeing Kessler with another girl made me really sick.A hand took my arm causing me to turn, I found Kessler face to face."What do you want?" I blurted out reluctantly."You're still rude," he raised an eyebrow, "I like you."I blinked several times without understanding and slipped out of his grasp."I don't care if you like me, besides, don't come near me.""You're scared of me?" He wanted to know, I think I was crazy because I would have sworn I had seen his eyes darker than normal. Outside the raindrops took me out of my reverie, it was cloudy and it was raining."Your eyes..." I started to say, but stopped myself, I didn't want him to think I'm crazy."Forget it.""I ask you again: are you afraid of me?" His voice was thicker, darker.I laughed."Please, I'm not afraid of you" I approached dangerously "In fact, you're pitying. That bad boy stuff is out of style now." I winked at him, turned around, and walked away from him with my heart beating a thousand miles an hour.I went to the cafeteria because I was very hungry, I had my lunch, this time I didn't want much, I just chose a chicken pasta sandwich, some fruit and a yogurt. There were many students here, I think more than there were in my old school. Most of them looked at me with evil eyes. I sat at a table in front of a huge window that overlooked the backyard, where afterward there was only forest and fog. I liked this kind of weather, where there was no wind at all, just gray clouds, drizzle, fog and cold. It brought back good memories."What was that about the library?" Lottie sat next to me with her lunch, she had scared me."Lottie, I nearly choked," I cursed, sipping on yogurt."I'm sorry.""I don't know what you're talking about." I looked ahead."From Kessler and his girlfriend."Hmm is his girlfriend."No, I mean, I don't like them. Especially him, he is all arrogant.""It's strange, before he didn't even look at me and now he even sat at our table."I shrugged."I don't know," I pretended not to understand, I didn't want him to assume that he did it for me."Well, you have to be a little careful with them, okay?" she advised me, this time I did look at her because I didn't understand what she meant."Why?""They are... well, experts in breaking girls' hearts, Eva, they are experts in conquering girls with a special glow and then turning it off," she murmured. She said it as if she knew them very well. "Be very careful and please don't fall for their charms. Eva, they have something that makes girls do what they want" she pointed at them.I followed her gaze to a table where Kessler and some other guys were sitting. As if sensing my gaze, Kessler looks at me and smiles sideways, but it wasn't a friendly smile but rather a challenging one.I knew that I had come to put myself into the lion's den."I don't quite understand what you're saying but believe me, I could never look at someone like Kessler; he's not my type," I told Lottie without taking my eyes off Kessler, however his jaw hardened as if he had heard what I was saying. I had said which was impossible because we were far away, right?"Anyway, I'm glad I met you, Eva."I turned my gaze to her and smiled at her, however, Lottie stared at someone or something behind me. I looked where she was looking and realized it was Lucas, Lottie's gaze towards my brother was one of love interest towards him."Do you like my brother?" I dared to ask, as her gaze was that of an admirer sighing over her idol. Lottie blushed and hid a smile."I didn't know he was your brother, what a shame," she said, taking a sip of her juice."Don't worry, my brother doesn't have a girlfriend," I winked at her."Now that he's hanging out with the popular crowd, I doubt I stand a chance with him," she sighed.I laughed. "Lucas is an idiot, don't judge him just by his good looks. He's unbearable. If you want, I can help you with him.""Really? Why would you do that?" she asked curiously. Outside, it started raining as if the cold weather wasn't enough."Lottie, I like you even though I've only known you for less than a day. And, to be honest, you're my brother's type.""Who's my type?" Lucas approached the table, carrying his backpack as if he were about to leave."Where are you going?" I asked, sounding like an overprotective mother."The guys invited me to the forest. They said they're having a small gather
"Let go of me," I straightened up, returning to my seat and adjusting my hair. It's obvious he noticed too, but I simply decided to ignore it. I don't like Kessler, I feel something dark within him that doesn't give me confidence. "Have we arrived yet?""Not yet, kitten, we're close.""Don't call me that," I reproached."Whatever you say, kitten."I closed my eyes for a few seconds because dealing with Kessler is like dealing with a wall. Kessler stopped near a huge tree."We have to go on foot from here," he says."But it's raining," I pointed out as if it weren't obvious."A little water won't hurt you."He got out, so I had no choice but to do the same. Luckily, it was just a drizzle and not too strong."Watch your step, this forest can be very treacherous."The grass and everything else was slippery; I used my bag as an umbrella."Why are we here? I'm starting to think Lucas isn't here and that you just brought me to distract me," I spoke. "Kessler!" The guy was blatantly ignoring
I got up abruptly, forgetting about my injured foot, which caused me to wince in pain."Be careful," he said, getting up as well."What's wrong with you?! Why do you come and kiss me like that out of nowhere?" I wiped the area with my hand.I could see a glimmer of sadness in Kessler's eyes, but he quickly brushed it off."Eva, don't exaggerate. It was just a kiss.""The first one. And how the hell did you know it was the first?"He shrugged."You look like someone who hasn't kissed before."What exasperation."No one believes that, Mr. Know-it-all. You better leave, Kessler, because you're stressing me out."Kessler made a swift move, his hands now on my waist."I told you I won't leave you alone, and it's still raining."I grabbed his hands and tried to remove them."Get your hands off me."Kessler stepped back."Tell me, Eva, what brings you here?" he asked, walking around the room as if he knew it perfectly."Don't you realize? My father is the new sheriff in town, he's here to in
As the evening passed and night fell, I felt even more worried because Lucas hadn't come home. It's all Kessler's fault; that guy will give me a lot of trouble. It was almost seven in the evening. Dad wasn't coming; I think he'll be late because of that boy's death. I'm anxious, uncomfortable, and desperate. I can't wait any longer. Limping, I left the house and crossed the garden to Kessler's house. I knocked on the door desperately and waited for someone to open it.Kessler appeared in my field of vision almost immediately."Eva? I thought something had happened. Why are you walking? You have a injured foot; you should be resting.""Lucas hasn't shown up," I entered his house without even asking for permission. "I need you to call one of your friends and make sure my brother is okay. Lucas isn't answering my calls.""Calm down, Eva, relax.""I can't! My brother is missing.""Eva, he's not missing. Your brother is fine.""Take me to him."God, I'm acting like a crazy mother. I can't
I stopped breathing for a few seconds, never taking my eyes off that huge animal. I feel like it's the end, that I'm going to die here and now, and that there's no one to protect me. If I run, the wolf will chase me; if I stay, it'll catch me. What should I do? I also don't have the good foot to run. The cell phone had no signal, and I'm sure that if I were to call someone, they wouldn't be here in time to defend me.I slowly backed away from the forest; the wolf was still there, looking at me untouched and with a thirst for human blood. Then the wolf advanced, and I froze in place as if not moving would serve any purpose. I was paralyzed. The wolf is black-haired, huge, and its eyes are as black as the night. It reminded me of Kessler. I felt a tear roll down my cheek; I knew it was my end. It hurts for my father, for Lucas; they'll be alone and feel the loss of another person. The wolf is in front of me, with no intention of attacking, just watching, analyzing me, and licking its ch
—Eva!" Lottie's voice startled me from my sleep. I woke up abruptly, not knowing what was happening or why this girl was making such a fuss outside my room."What's going on?" I wrapped myself in the blanket; I was very sleepy."Wake up, please.""Hmm," I looked at her, she was very agitated and seemed worried, so I knew something bad had happened."What happened?" I wanted to know, sitting up."Something happened last night," she murmured. A wave of fear washed over me as I imagined that something might have happened to Lucas."What? Don't scare me.""It's about... your father."I opened my eyes wide."What happened to my dad? Speak, Lottie!""Last night, he went to find your brother in the woods and was attacked by a wolf.""What?" I exclaimed, jumping out of bed and running downstairs. Lottie followed me. How could I not have realized this?"Wait! Your father is okay!"I looked at her."Your father was in the patrol car when the wolf attacked him. It seems your father shot and kill
I was thinking about what he said about his brother's death; he seemed sad. Besides, the death of what seemed like his sister, already deceased, so I put on my clothes and left the room. I headed to the kitchen to prepare breakfast. I wasn't very hungry, but I had to eat since I didn't have dinner yesterday either. My brother came down the stairs, went to the fridge, grabbed orange juice and a packet of cookies, and sat down to eat."What are you thinking about?" he asked me, looking a bit shocked about yesterday."Nothing, Eva, let me eat."Lucas stood up and left the kitchen. I started washing dishes and tidying up the kitchen because it was a mess. I grabbed my backpack and left the house. It was raining outside, so I took out my umbrella and walked slowly along the sidewalk. I couldn't get Kessler's words out of my mind. I wanted to stop thinking about it, so I hurried my pace until I reached the high school.Outside, Lottie was chatting with a guy. As soon as she saw me, she appr
Penny had me by the hair, pulling it. I grabbed her waist and threw her aside."Don't get in my way!" I yelled. It seemed like today was the day for fights. I punched her in the ribs, making her stagger, then someone's arms grabbed me by the waist and pulled me away from her."What are you doing, Eva?" It was Kessler.Penny got to her feet. She didn't like at all what she was seeing. Penny now looked like one of those wild wolves from the forest, disheveled and growling with anger."Don't touch her, Kessler.""What the hell is going on here?" The principal appeared in our line of sight. "First, two young people fight outside, and now you two in here. The four of you, to my office. Now."I grabbed my bag, broke free from Kessler's grip, and followed the principal to his office. I knew perfectly well that we would get a very boring lecture. All I wanted was to get out of here quickly."And you, miss," he looked at me, "Your father is the new sheriff of the town; you should set an exampl
