Chapter Twelve - Distance

What he said caught me off guard. I seriously don’t get this man. He is far more complicated compared to a woman’s train of thought.

“Just why are you not acting this way towards me in public?” I solemnly asked, “I will accept every pain I would feel, but could you at least tell me?”

Eli looked like he was surprised by my almost sudden begging. Sadly, he averted his gaze while clenching his fists.

“I'm sorry,” he whispered, and the words hung in the air, leaving a heavy silence between us. I waited, hoping for more, but he remained silent.

Disappointment washed over me like a relentless wave, leaving me feeling utterly defeated. I had poured all my energy into trying to get him to open up, but my efforts had hit a dead end.

If I start to act distant around him, that would be on him. He had pushed me away one too many times already.
