Chapter 7

When I woke up, Chase was long gone and the sheets were cold. A small smile played on my lips, however, when I inhaled the soothing hint of forest rain that lingered in my room. Without his scent, I could have easily convinced myself that it was all a dream. A very lovely yet confusing one.

My stomach flipped at the thought of his reaction to waking up in the same bed with me. I hurriedly got dressed and went downstairs, hoping that I could corner him for answers before he disappeared again.

Last night had brought about a strong desire the know who Chase was beneath all that coldness.

As I approached the kitchen, bits of Ron and Chase’s conversation floated out, piquing my interest.

“It could have been them.”

“I can feel it in my gut, they w—" Chase’s words broke and in the quiet that ensued, I knew they had sensed my presence.

Stepping into the kitchen, I offered them an awkward smile, “Hi!”

Chase scowled but I didn’t blame him, my false enthusiasm sounded grating even to my ears.
