SIXTY ONE

Black filled the edges of my vision; I kept my eyes open but only saw white lines as they moved like a road. The only thing I could hear was my heartbeat. My breath came in ragged, shallow gasps. Seconds passed as I lay there, then I heard voices.

"Patient is eighteen years old. Female. High school. Shot in the shoulder with a .45 and is in labor."

People swarmed all over me, trying to help me, I realized.

"Let me through!"

Liam?

It's his voice.

"Sir, you need to back off and let us do our jobs."

"I need to be there for her. That's my fiancé and my son."

Liam, I'm here. Please don't leave me.

"Sir, we will save the child, but I can't guarantee the mother."

"Well, you have to do your best!" Liam yelled at the top of his lungs. "I don't care how much the cost. I want you to save them."

"Liam, calm down." I hear Rex's voice telling his little brother to ease his distress.
