Chapter 09|Dumb is the New Normal
She wanted to give Chucks normal even in a family of criminals like herself, in a place where guns were carelessly dropped like they were toys and were an ideal present for a child.
She wanted the only assignment he had to do, to be in a book and not a possible way of saying goodbye to his adorable face.
She didn't want him to be the weirdo who was always on his computer, the teenage guy who wasn't obsessed with video games or in her case, parties, and boys.
University was like a rude awakening to reality. She tried to ghost everyone and even though she came back right after classes, she still heard the whispers, the Snickers.
She was the abnormal girl who was able to beat two Feared cultists in her Year one, who wanted to rob her and didn't break a sweat.
He was already so intelligent it freaked her atimes. She didn't want him to be bullied or be at the receiving end of mocking nicknames and taunts.
But she couldn't act on what she wanted. The team's needs have to come before her desires and fierce wants. So, instead, she nudged him playfully.
"So? Spill?"
"Apart from his gateman, Nanny who cooks for him, and lots of security Intel, he lives alone." She raised her brow, convinced that something was up with the Governor. "So, that got me intrigued about his work life, unlike other governors who have lots of Personal assistants. He has only five and only one that reports directly to him. Now, it is a known fact that the assistant who reports directly to him, at best, lasts for only a week__"
She raised her brow, that part of his sentence fully getting her intrigued.
"Apart from the strenuous workload piled and cut out for this assistance of his, since he or she is doing a work of more than ten people, the unfortunate assistant has to cope with a Governor and consequently a boss, who is a perfectionist... One mistake, one slip. And you are fired." He said, and then with his lips curved into a wry smile."He is just like you,"
She shook her head in denial.
"I'm not a perfectionist."
"You made me redo a logo for a brand, that wasn't even real, 15 times!" He retorted.
"The more original, the more plausible. You know the drill!" She defended, as they both referred to one of their paper companies which was a cover-up as their source of income.
These companies are just registered names, they pay taxes too. But no business activities take place there because it wasn't real, there was no establishment like that. It was only in papers.
"At least I don't fire people every week!"
"You would if you can. Inefficiency makes your skin crawl.." he simply stated, as he has her all figured out.
"I wonder why no one else feels the same way! Anything worth doing is worth doing perfectly."
"The Governor feels the same way, hence one poor assistant who doesn't understand this concept packed home, today." He said, smiling at her excitedly.
"So?" She asked, not getting what he was hyped up about.
"You are going to be his assistant. I have sent your Curriculum vitae__"
"You know normal people just say CV?" She had an amused smile on her face.
"Yeah. I know dumb is the new normal. Like I was saying, I have sent in your Curriculum vitae and it would be decided on by merit..." He paused and they both chuckled knowing there was nothing like merit, in Nigeria, in Lagos even. "Don't worry I already made a call to the government house, with a burner phone. One of the guys there owe Sir Young a favor, and posing as Sir Young, I made sure he will redeem that favor__"
"Don't you think that will make him suspicious about me when I resume work?"
He scoffed, shaking his head.
"I only used a burner phone just because it is protocol but not as a necessity. He only knows Sir Young as a man who saves his butt, once from the law. Besides, Sir Young has something on almost everyone in the government, some as tools for threats, and some owe him a favor or two. That is how you stay powerful."
"And you know this and I don't, because?"
"I'm the brain of the Native and besides who do you think does the documenting of shreds of evidence in case they try to act smart in future?"
She smiled at him, hopefully. "Do you happen to have anything on the__"
"No, the Governor is squeaky clean, it is frighteningly and he is doing well, keeping the mysterious aura. You can't figure out what you don't understand. The only thing I have been able to figure out is that he is incredibly good-looking, even when he doesn't know a picture of him is being taken, his side view, any view is ridiculously nice." Chucks said switching from all serious to playful as he waggled his brow suggestively at the last part.
"Ew... Knock that look off your face." She said, shaking her head at him, horrified.
She knew he was handsome, she had seen him at the club. The devil too was handsome, so it didn't mean he was innocent. She thought.
"What do you plan to study?" He was playing with his mouse as he shrugged then, raised his brow at her confused, "At the university." She added for clarity.
"Is that necessary?"
"Young made me do it. As a leader, I will have to make you do it too."
He stared at her for some time. "Why did you study business administration?"
"Well the course only took 4 years, and they had a dress code."
He raised his brow, and she shrugged.
"It is hard figuring out what normal teenagers like to wear__" she simply replied.
He smiled, showing off his dimples, Knowing that only Jasmine could study a course for four years because of the reasons she had mentioned.
"And Chucks, you should learn how to play video games."

She gawked into the mirror, shocked at the woman gawking right back at her.
Instead of her baggy crop tops, she was wearing a chiffon top, which she had tucked into a light navy blue skirt that was a change from her loose shorts.
For her makeup, she had watched a few YouTube tutorials and had gone with mascara, powder, and tinted lip balm. Her hair she had used a ribbon on, making it pour as massive curls at the side of her face.
She grabbed her red Louis Vuitton bag and slipped her legs into the red flats she had ordered a week ago when she had received a mailed letter of appointment.
She breathed in and out not believing the tingling nervous excitement, she felt as her tummy did flip flops at the thought that today was her first day at work.
Chapter 010|Her father's daughterShe strolled out of her room to have a second opinion of her clothing choice since it was 5:30 am and she still had a lot of time to spare. Especially as she starts work at 8. "Wow." Chucks whispered, his eyes wide in surprise as he gave her a quick appraisal from head to toe, his eyes trying to take in the transformation. He was on the porch, his hand around a mug full of coffee and his eyes which were on his computer, now on her. "You look like one of those working-class, disciplined women on magazines. You normally don't laugh, so it isn't hard to shimmy into this new job description." She scowled at him.He abandoned his cup of coffee, but yet kept it beside him. "That is it.. the air of a confident ruthless assistant to the Governor. Least I forget as your manager, I am entitled to 10% of that income among other miscellaneous benefi
Chapter 011|You have usTaiwo stared at the curvaceous beautiful woman in front of him, who had a daring and very arrogant attitude that both intrigued and amused him. She had in not more than 5 minutes made him actually see her. She was a nice surprise to him because you don't get to see a woman with such a cocky and smug grin every day. He hates to know that she won't last too because well, no one has but being a Governor most times could get boring, especially when you have the same boring schedules, the same pre-planned meetings with people you can't stand the sight of, but have to act cordially with for the camera. "Your conference call with the commonwealth chairman is in Ten minutes. Your mails have been separated from and compiled into three categories, treat as urgent, love messages, and Friends, relatives, and acquaintances mails." She informed him, about to leave. "Miss Bolanle," he called out.
Chapter 012|I crave to spill his blood"I'm sorry, Sir. It is just that__" "Taiwo the Governor is a Mark I'm set on killing not just because I was sent to, not because it was an instruction I was supposed to carry out even without asking questions but because it is a need. I crave to spill his blood. And if I never retreated from killing other faceless marks that I never bothered to find out their crimes, yet his I have stuck in my damn head why do you think I'll ever fucking retreat just because he is a glorified walking dead in Power?" "I'm sorry." His voice was firm and curt. He wasn't scared of her anymore. There was respect but the scare was over which she found puzzling. What has he been scared of? Her or the thought that her intentions have changed. "So," he swallowed, "What is the status of your operation?" She swiveled in her chair remembering the hardly eventful time
Chapter 013|Some lives are more precious than othersJasmine rushed towards Taiwo's desk the minute he was out thankful that he was finally leaving the office with her in it. Her gaze met the webcam directly facing his mahogany desk precautionarily because although she had already been planning this for a long time with Chucks who was already with a pre-recorded video of Taiwo's empty office which by infiltrating the capitol's security wall, he would make to be seen rather than her snooping around. She grinned widely noting the red beeping light was off, and although she was aware of Chucks' genius, she had been a bit scared that he just might not be possible to gain access to them but once again Chucks was proving to her how insanely good he was with his gadget and though pride squeezed her heart she couldn't help the anxiousness and worry that followed knowing that he was way farther from normal. It was a conflicting fee
Chapter 14|Kill me and hide my body? She shook her head, surprised to see a pistol, hanging out from Taiwo's jacket as he hurriedly came in. It was unlike him to be so forgetful and careless about such little details. The man was a symbol of composed and cold himself. Aside from the fact that he was 10 minutes late, which was unlike him, he looked really worried. "Good morning," she greeted, as chirpy as a bird. "Good morning Miss. Bolanle." He whispered, giving her a thankful nod as she offered him a cup of coffee. No sugar, no milk. She read about his likes and dislikes more than once. So much that her employee manual now has ears at its edges. He seemed disturbed and she could see through his cold demeanor, that he was on the brink of losing it. "You will want to tuck in your gun if I were you. Not the least ideal for an employee to se
Chapter 016|Even the Devil was once an AngelSo, the more she looked with that thought in her head, the image in front of her was beginning to morph and soon, she didn't notice a man that had such a beautiful grin he hid perhaps because he knew the effect it had on people and kind of make him human but she could see him as an ice King that was once a boy. Vulnerable, unloved, scared. He wasn't the Governor then and didn't wield so many powers. She just needed to remind him of how much he wanted to feel something rather than focus on him now that didn't feel anything at all because, for all she knew, a heart still beats inside this dear man, this moment confirms it, all she needed was to remind it and teach it how to beat faster because after all, even the Devil was once an Angel. They drove back to the capitol in absolute silence.***Jasmine dropped the complaint document Taiwo had ordered her to file against the government sch
Chapter 017|He needs a therapist, not youIt was past closing hours but Jasmine had stayed behind to work on a drafted contract that she was meant to submit the first thing on Taiwo's desk for his signatures. As she worked, she hummed softly. Her hands stilled on her system as she felt his presence before she saw him. His lurking intimidating aura demanded attention. His guards were down, probably because he had not expected her to still be in the office or he was way tired to pretend but, whichever it was it gave her a glimpse of Taiwo behind his office because at that moment he looked his real 28 years of age and slightly even more vulnerable. She stood up, meeting his gaze. She could perceive the unmistaken stench of the alcoholic beverage, Tequila. Interesting, Drinking too. His eyes drank in her every movement like a predator to prey as she tried to grasp what was happenin
Chapter 018|Untill I take everything I give himHis eyes were on a book but his mind was in on a reckless search. Ever since the one time slip he had with his assistant, Jasmine, he has never been himself. A part of him wanted her to reject his offer, stare into his eyes, and tell him how delusional and wrecked she thinks he was to even preposition such an offer. Another part of him just wanted her, had wanted her from the very first time he had set his eyes on her. The very first day she had entered his office, confidence in her eyes, defiance in her tone. Normally on Friday evenings, he should be calling one of his standby girls, he should be booking a hotel and a room with another name, he should be ball deep into another woman allowing her to free him momentarily of the stress and thoughts, but still so much in control that he knows how to grab a gun if he suspects foul play. &nb
