“Is Jake really okay?”

I stopped the truck in front of Jacob's house and turned to my daughter.

“He's fine, but Taylor, you need to stop calling him that.”

“But mom, he told me I could call him that,” She insisted, undoing her seat belt before opening the door to get out.

“Somehow, I feel like I shouldn't believe what you say, baby.”

I went to the back door and picked Lily up before setting her down to see her run to her owner.

The damned pig was getting heavier.

“I promised I wouldn’t say more lies, mommy. Although I didn't really lie, I just didn't tell the whole truth. They’re two different things.”

And she was only seven.

“I dread the day you come of age, girl,” I sighed, leading her towards the entrance.

It’d only been a few hours since I saw Jacob and he told me about his painful past, but somehow, those few hours felt like days.

I hadn't wanted to let go of him. I’d wished I could weld my arms around him and comfort him until he felt strong enough to face the world on his own,
