Running after the rogues at full speed, I let Flint, my wolf, take over the physical part, but I am still in charge of the mind-link and most of the cognitive activity. It’s sort of odd being in the body of my wolf. When I am in my human form, Flint is there, but rather dormant most of the time. I am almost always cognizant of what is happening while we are on a hunt like this one. The only time I even tune out a little bit is on a long run, like when we got to the city on foot.
Now, I am running alongside Dez, and the two rogues that took off from the house are in front of us. I see our other forces coming in from the side. SebastianThe three rogues are taken down to the basement and put in three separate cells. One of the Omegas notified Grip, and he is on his way back from the city to interrogate them. If anyone can do it, it’s him. He’ll have them singing like canaries within a few minutes.That doesn’t stop me from trying, though. I don’t even bother to go back to my room to take a shower, just grab some clothes out of an emergency stash in my office and then head down the stairs to see where we are. The three of them are loud, yelling at my men to let them go, and I listen intently to try to see who sounds the most frightened. AriaMy mind is made up. I know what I have to do. I go into automatic mode, rushing through the steps I have to follow in order to have the best chance of getting out of here without getting caught. I figure my ability to walk out the door in the daylight is just as likely to get me where I want to go as sneaking out at night, so that’s what I plan to do.But I remember that Dez said people do monitor the cameras. I have to assume that means the house cameras, too, and if they’ve just captured rogues, there’s probably a good chance they’re watching them extra closely. AriaRuby is flying across the open ground, her claws digging into the soft earth and flipping out chunks of grass and dirt with each step. She doesn’t slow for anything. Not large boulders in our way, babbling brooks or wider streams, not even a sharp incline now and again. She runs on, for hours, and when the sun begins to drop below the horizon, I know we have transitioned out of the forests of the north into the mountainous areas further south. AriaRuby doesn’t stop running. She just keeps moving, all through the evening, into the night. By the time she finally finds a place to hunker down for a few hours of sleep, the sun is beginning to rise above the horizon in the distance.It is a smart move, one I cannot fault her for. This way, the night patrols of wolves, the ones we’ve heard howling off in the distance for hours, will be home or in their offices working, like Sebastian will be. I picture him, sitting behind his desk in a suit, looking as handsome as ever, maybe nervously tapping his pen as he wonders what happened to me. He’s probably running interference with his father, trying to convince him it’s not worth it to come after me, that there’s no reason to worry about any agreement he had with my parents since they’re dead.

SebastianEventually, my escorts drop off, one by one, leaving me to return to their homes or whatever else they have to worry about. I am clearly not a threat, and as I cross into other pack lands, I likely fall out of their minds. With any luck, they will alert the other packs ahead of me that I seem to be just crossing through, and as I make my way closer to Aria, I will be unharassed.Flint runs as far as he can before he finally finds a place to settle, mid-afternoon of our second day. He is exhausted, and other than a few sips of water from fresh streams we’ve crossed and a rabbit that happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time, we haven’t had water or food.I don’t care, though. I am more focused on finding Aria than anything else.
