“Good morning Morris” Patricia grinned at Morris, as she approached him sitting in the waiting room.
“good morning nurse Patricia” Morris nodded, with a crooked smirk on his face
“I will be back; I want to change into my scrubs” she hurried past Morris
Morris smiled “I prefer you on mufti though” he raised the tone of his voice so Patricia would hear.
Patricia smiled, but didn’t respond, as she walked into a room with the inscription ‘female dressing room’ atop the door…
After some minutes passed, the dressing room’s door opened, and out came Patricia in her blue scrubs, with her hands in the pocket, she smiled as she walked back to the waiting room, to where Morris sat.
“you're back into this scrub” Morris rubs his nose, as Patricia approached him
“yes, I am” Patricia smiled at him.
“good morning Nurse Patricia” an aged man rolled his oxygen tank, and a tube-like material in his nostrils, connected to the tank, through a tube, said with a surprised voice, as he walked in, from behind her smiling.
“good morning Mr. James, I’m hoping you slept well” Patricia rubbed James’ arm
“I missed your presence last night, we all did, the patients, this hospital can’t be the same without you”
Patricia looked at Morris, and chuckled “is that so!”
“yes, very much so, you can’t be replaced here”
“thank you very much, that is good coming from you. How are you doing? By the way, still having difficulty in breathing?”
“well, what can I say, I’m surviving at least” James coughed
Patricia pats James on his shoulders, “you will be ok” she said, looking into James’ eyes
James nods his head, “you see what I’m talking about? Not many Nurses can do this, “I don’t know how you manage do it, but maybe it should be taught in nursing schools, it’s a must-have-gift, for all nurses”
Patricia looks at Morris, who sat and smiled as he watched in amazement, Patricia discussing with James
“do what?” Patricia shrugged, and gave a smirk.
“the connection you have with your Patients, it’s as if you can put yourself in their shoes, it makes you empathize with them”
“is that a blush I see on your face? Oh my God!” Morris exclaimed ecstatically.
“I’m not blushing” Patricia scoffed
“are you sure” Morris tilted his head, as he focused on Patricia, waiting for her affirmation
“well…maybe I am, but I reckon we are all allowed to, once in a while”she answered, a shy smile spreading across her face, making her dimples more visible.
“I knew it. yes, we are all allowed to” Morris replied with a triumphant smile.
“I’ll be heading to my room; my old legs can’t hold me for too long” James said as he turned back to leave.
“Alright James, I will come check on you later”
"I’ll be anticipating your coming, just don’t take too long” James rolled his oxygen tank away, as he walked into a lobby
Patricia smiled, looking at Morris who smirked, she shrugged. Then Patricia sat on the chair beside Morris.
“How is your son, have you checked on him?”
“the last time I looked through his door, he was sleeping”
“alright, I think I should go check on him…”
“help help!!!” a shout came from one of the rooms
Did you hear that shout?” Patricia widened her eyes, as she stared at Morris
“yes, I did”
“help!!!” the sound came bellowing again.
Patricia and Morris stood up with some urgency in them, then sprinted to where the sound came from. They approached the teenager’s room. Patricia tried opening the door, it didn’t budge at the first try, then she gave it a second try, and she goes careening into the teenager hospital.
“what I’m I doing here?” the teenager was hyperventilating, with black look on his face. Doctor Dave stood beside the teenager; he had a dumbfounded look on his face. Nurse Nne was there too. She tried to inject the teenager with anesthesia“what are you injecting him with?” Patricia walked to Nne, and held her hands, stopping her from injecting the teenager.Dave gave Patricia a glowering look, but Patricia ignored him.“what is wrong with him?” Morris had a taut in his voice“I came to check on him, he was still sleeping, then I touched his arm, trying to check his pulse, then he woke, and started screaming, we’ve been trying to calm him down”Morris made an effort to move towards his son, but as he approached, his son became more scared, and drew back.Patricia noticed “stop” she told Morris, then she walked towards the boy“mom! Please help me” the boy called out, with a beatific expression on his face. There was
The door opened, revealing an adorable teenage girl, she tied her black curly hair in a bun. She smiled, lightly, revealing a pair of braces in her teeth. Then she walked in and closed the door behind her, Christopher’s eye gleamed with joy, as the teenage girl approached the bed, with some elegance in her walking steps, but worry on her face, she felt sorry for Christopher. Patricia was marveled as she watched the way Christopher’s mode changed, from being sober, to being so elated, she wondered who the girl was to Christopher. She slid into Christopher’s open arms, “I’m sorry I didn’t come sooner” the teenage girl mouthed. They both tightened their arms around each other, like prisoners of their own bodies. Then a wave of silence hit the room, for a couple of seconds. Untangling from their embrace, Christopher laid back fully on his bed.“you are here now that’s what matter, better late than never” Christopher smiled, as he held the teenage girls’ hand
At the cafeteria Morris and Patricia sat, taking a snack. They both faced each other, some other people were also seated in the cafeteria having a snack-break.“how is work today?” Morris said with a muffled gob, from the snack he had“work is fine, a little hiccups, but then it’s part of the job I signed up for, so it’s all good” Patricia tucked some strands of her hair behind her ear.“I’ve watched you closely with Doctor Dave, you two are always on each other’s nerves, not will to surrender to the other”“hearing his name alone, makes me want to shove a pole up his ass” Patricia jerked her already tight fist up. Damn that Doc always looking for the most annoying bones to pick. “why is it that way?” Morris asked, his voice laced with more curiosity. “it’s what we all go through in the medical field, the doctors always feel they are superior to other professions, so they feel they can boss us around, and expect utter reverence from us
There was a light knock-on doctor’s Dave’s door, “come in” Dave said, as he rand his hand through his hair. The door opened, as it revealed Patricia, she walked in, and closed the door“oh, it’s you” Dave sounded disappointed to see her “so what do you want?”“you didn’t…” Patricia took a deep breath, “I came to inform you that there would be a little celebration for Christopher, the teenage patient. I’ve informed all the other staffs, so I thought I should at least inform you before tomorrow”“at least in form me!” Dave’s demeanor changed “why I’m I just hearing about this? You informed all the staffs, and you told me last”“I didn’t think it was a big deal”“big deal! Did you put other patients into consideration? That this may make them uncomfortable, this is a hospital, not a club, for Christ sake” Dave slammed his hand on his desk“I’ve informed all the patients, so they are well informed sir”“it seems you have everything
It was ten-twenty-five AM, when Priscilla walked into Christopher’s room, he was lying on the bed, it had white sheets on, the bed squeaked, as Christopher tried to seat up.“your here early” Christopher was amused“yes I am” Priscilla smiled, then walked close to Christopher and held his hand, “as days turn to years, so many people come flooding into your life, each giving you a piece of what life is about, they all have a specific time-frame to be in your life, and once that time has elapsed, they leave, but the question is not how long a person stays in your life, what really matters is what was he/she able to do, while the stopwatch they had in your life ticked, that’s all that matters eventually, those little favors that a person does to another, they are the tires that keep life moving. The little time I have in your life, though it’s ticking out, I don’t know how long I have left, I want to make
Patricia stood there, and watched him leave, she didn’t move, until he was out of sight. In Christopher’s’ room, he sat up, finding solace on Priscilla’s shoulders, he sulked.“she didn’t mean to hurt you, as a matter of fact, she is the reason you had the birthday in the first place, she just wants you to be good, to feel comfortable” Priscilla said, as she wrapped her arms around Christopher“it was only my mom that was allowed to call me Christoph”“I know that, but Nurse Patricia doesn’t, she’d have to be informed first, so you can’t really fault her”“I guess not, thank you for being part of those that planned to surprise me, it worked” Christopher raised his head from Priscilla’s shoulder, then looked at her, and smiled“you should be thanking nurse Patricia, it was all her, I just made a few suggestions, and the idea to bring you out of your room was mine” Priscilla nodded her head, and smiled reassuringly.“well, you did something, a
It was the early hours of the morning, the hospital was just beginning to come alive, patients walking in and out of the hospital, nurses taking their morning shift, Patricia sat at the waiting room with Morris, who looked as though he just got up from sleep.“good morning Morris” Patricia said, with a smile on her gleam“good morning to you too” Morris mirrored the look on Patricia’s face“you still look sleepy; you couldn’t get good sleep at night?”“well, the night was cold, so sleeping became quite a big deal, how was your night?”“my night was great” Patricia nodded her headMorris smiled “you know you are really transparent, it’s good though”“transparent! How?”“you can’t hide an emotion, like now it’s so obvious that you are happy, when you are displeased you don’t also hide it, it&
The next day Patricia and Christopher walked into the dentist hospital, it was fifty minutes past one noon. “I’ll sit here waiting for you” Patricia gestured to one of the seats at the waiting room“ok then, I’ll go look for her, I’m sure they are getting her prepared” Christopher walked into a slimmer lobby, leaving Patricia at the waiting room. Then a door opened, an elderly woman came out, she was Priscilla’s mom“good day ma” Christopher said, as he bowed to greet her“Christopher what brings you here? I thought you are in the hospital”“yes ma, I was but I came to be with Priscilla, since this is her last appointment”“that is very thoughtful of you, I’m sure Pricillia would be thrilled to see you, she’s in that room, the next turn by your right, the first door you see”“Alright ma, thank you” Christopher said and scurried away.Getting to the door, Christopher knocked, he got a permission from someone inside the
