Chapter Seventy-Two

“You did what?!” Sally shrieked and then winced. I suppose she was still experiencing a hangover from getting drunk at her own mother’s funeral. It was me who should be mad at her. I don’t get how the tables turned, but I learned at a very young age that nothing is fair in this life.

I took a spoonful of Darby’s stew and shoved it in my mouth, then picked up more salad. If I kept my mouth busy, I didn’t have to talk. I nodded at Darby; her cooking is still very good.

Sally looked at Cameron for support. “Cameron!” she called. “Tell your girlfriend why what she did was a mistake.”

Technically, I was not his girlfriend, but I was not averse to anyone thinking what they wanted. Cameron glanced at me and shrugged his shoulders. “I think she did what she had to do in the heat of the moment. The board would have eaten her alive.”
