Riven's mansion was a chaos of movement. All shifters, both young and ancient, werewolf and lycan, all moved around the pack house, running different errands. Everyone got orders from the Alpha that hadn't left his room since the previous night.
Ever since Caleb ran through the entire rooms of the mansion like a mad beast, informing everyone of the arrival of the Alpha's mate, the entire household had gone into a state of restlessness. No one slept a wink through out the night. They all gathered at the entrance of Riven's chamber, wanting to have a look at the long awaited Alpha's mate. But Riven was having none of that. The only person allowed into his room was Henrietta, the ancient witch. Not even Cade, his beta was allowed. He was in a state of protectiveness and he didn't want his mate to be disturbed. After Henrietta checked on Layla and recited a spell to know what Layla's ailment was, she reported her findings to Riven and told him of the herbs she would need in healing Layla.Riven then passed the information to Cade and Caleb who were waiting outside the door of his room. Every shifter was to go out into the forest and look for the numerous special herbs Henrietta would need in making a healing potion. And that was how it all started. The herbs were found and Henrietta instructed them on what to do. Some parts were grinded, some boiled, some burned and the smoke trapped in an incense tin. It was a riot of activities. While in Riven's room, Henrietta sat beside Layla on the large king-size bed, moving her palms over her entire body and muttering strange spells. She looked young, like she was in her early thirties. But everyone knew Henrietta had lived for centuries, almost as long as Riven. The witches were known for using their magic and spells to make themselves look younger even after so many years. Henrietta was almost a thousand years old and yet she looked thirty, with bright red hair and sharp blue eyes.Riven sat on the other side of Layla with her tiny palm held in his. His eyes were fixated on her face, never leaving it. He watched for signs of wakefulness but Layla remained unconscious, her chest rising and falling in deep slumber. Her paleness scared him and he couldn't help but wonder how she got into the ocean."She will be fine Riven",Henrietta said softly. Her hands were no longer hovering over Layla's face. She now stared at Riven, her blue eyes filled with concern. She knew how Riven felt right now. She and Riven had known each other since the beginning and she knew how long he had waited to find his mate. To see her unconscious and looking so pale would be too much for him to handle.Riven sighed but didn't take his eyes off Layla. "When I found her at the shore, I thought she was dead. And then she opened her eyes, and stared at me. There was so much confusion in them, like she didn't know where she was"."Maybe she doesn't",Henrietta said. "Maybe there's a reason why you found her in the ocean. Surely Selene has a reason for making you wait this long and bringing her to you this way. Have patience, your questions will be answered"."Right now all I'm concerned about is making sure she's okay",Riven said smoothly. He traced his other hand over her soft palm. She was still dressed in that awful sack but he hesitated to take it off. When she showed signs of recovering, he would take care of that."How much longer?",he asked and finally took his eyes off Layla. Worry had darkened the shade of his eyes to a golden brown and he stared at Henrietta."The healing spell should have taken hold of her by now. It is time to apply the potion".Riven dropped Layla's hand gently on the bed and walked towards the door. Cade and Caleb seemed to be waiting and they both strained their necks to look inside as Riven opened the door."Alpha? Is she okay?",Cade asked worriedly."I don't know. I can only hope",Riven said. "Bring in the potions. And Cade, please keep the crowd back. They will all get to see her. But not now"."Yes Alpha",Cade said and left to pass the order to the rest."Caleb get some water for me",he said to the gamma."Water, right. In a bowl? Or a cup? Or..." Caleb trailed off and Riven resisted the urge to snap at him. This wasn't the right time for him to act stupid."A bottle of water Caleb",he said in a calm voice."Right away Alpha",Caleb said and marched off.Riven shut the door and turned to the bed just in time to see Layla's eyes flutter open....Layla knew instantly that she was in a room, on a warm soft bed. She could feel the warm blankets over the rough dress she wore. The room was warm too. She heard voices, they sounded close by. A door was shut closed and then silence. Her eyes fluttered open and she saw him again. The golden eyed stranger. He was staring back at her and he moved quickly towards the bed and sat beside her, taking her hand in his. Delicious tingles danced up her skin at his touch and she drew her hands away, surprised by it.Riven felt hurt as she swiftly moved her hand away from his. But he couldn't blame her. She had no idea who he was so she was bound to be wary of him."Hello dear",Henrietta whispered softly and Layla turned her eyes towards her, surprised that there was someone else in the room. She stared at the woman, taking in her beautiful appearance. Her red hair seemed to glow brightly and her blue eyes were friendly. But Layla trusted no one, not after the cruelty she had gone through in the hands of Madame Parker. Her eyes suddenly widened. Madame Parker! Had she been caught? Had she been sold to the highest bidder who would make her his sex slave? Her breath began to come out in harsh pants and she tried to leave the bed, panic filling her eyes when she realized she couldn't move. Her body felt like lead."She's terrified",Henrietta said and looked worriedly towards Riven. "If she doesn't calm down, she would hyperventilate"."What do we do?",Riven asked, fear laced in his voice. Layla kept trying to get away from him and wouldn't allow Henrietta touch her. Her eyes moved around the room wildly, as if she was scared of something. Something was definitely scaring her and his heart broke as tears spilled down her eyes.Without thinking twice, he moved closer to her and drew her into his arms. Layla tried to fight him off, terrified and thinking he was the man who Madame Parker told her about. She struggled for a while but Riven didn't let her go. Instead he began to whisper soothing words to her."It's okay my love... you're okay. You're safe here. You're safe with me and I won't let anyone hurt you, I promise. I won't let anyone hurt you, I promise my love. Please be calm for me. You're safe with me... you're safe with me..."Layla gradually ceased struggling as Riven's soothing words caressed her ears. The tingles erupted in her skin and it made her shiver. It made her want to feel more. This couldn't be the same person Madame Parker told her about. This stranger was kind to her, treating her like she was the most important thing to him."You're so important to me my love, and I will never let any harm befall you",Riven said softly, as if he had been listening to her thoughts.Layla remained still in his arms, letting him hold her. Strangely enough she didn't feel scared anymore. She felt safe, and she believed his words that he wouldn't hurt her. She started to look up to his face when she felt the darkness calling to her again. She hated the darkness because she felt so alone there, so frightened. She tried to fight it but it pulled her under and her eyes closed."She's out again. Henrietta we need to begin the healing ritual now",Riven said as Layla went limp in his hands. Her bouts of wakefulness and unconsciousness were making him deathly worried."I will bring the things I need",Henrietta said and walked out of the room. And before the darkness completely pulled Layla under, a thought formed in her head.I'm supposed to be dead. For many days, Layla drifted in and out of consciousness. She was plaged with nightmares of Madame Parker capturing her and selling her off to some brutal men. She would wake up trashing, her legs tangled in the bedsheets, sweating profusely and crying out in fear. And each time she had those dreams, Riven was always there to soothe her. He was there to whisper safe words to her, calming her with his voice and the tingles that danced each time their bodies touched. Layla found a safe haven in his arms and she stopped fighting him off. She knew as long as he was there with her, she was safe. The healing ritual was done and the potion applied to Layla's body. Soon the sickly paleness disappeared and colour gradually returned to her skin. Her cheeks retained its rosy colour and her eyes lost its dark circles. Her veins that had been visible receded and her wild looking eyes became calm. She was still not totally free with Riven and certainly not to the crowd of shifters that waited anxi
"So this is Riven's mate? What a shame!",Cara said scornfully and folded her arms before her, staring icily at Layla. When the news reached her father's pack about Riven finding his mate, jealousy had begun to eat deep into her. A part of her had been happy that Riven didn't find his mate. As a matter of fact, her father, the Alpha of Silver Moon Pack had been trying to establish a relationship between her and Riven. Being connected to the great Qinn dynasty was an opportunity of a life time and she had been trying to do her part by getting closer to Riven. There had been a series of hot passion in between the bedsheets between them but apart from that, Riven never made any attempt to go further with their relationship. Even when she knew he only wanted her to release his sexual desires, she still clung to him with the blind hope that he would mark her one day and make her his Luna. Now that hope was dashed brutally as she stared at the scrawny girl before her, dressed in a gray sac a
Riven gripped the first shifter be could find around the neck, lifted him up and roared into his face."WHERE IS SHE?"."Alpha...",the shifter choked out over the tight grip around his neck. He couldn't breathe and he could feel the muscles of his throat tearing up as Riven's claws emerged and pierced into his skin. If Riven didn't stop, he would die."WHERE IS SHE?",Riven roared again, his fury mounting when he didn't get the response he needed."Alpha you will kill him!",Cade said as he arrived with Caleb, shifting back into his human form. The shifter Riven held was already choking, blood spilling down the sides of his throat and wetting Riven's claws. With the way Riven had raced out of the Ancient Temple in blinding speed, he knew something was wrong. And a minute later, the mind linked had reached him about the Luna's disappearance. He and Caleb had shifted instantly, taking off after the Alpha.Riven didn't bother to acknowledge the words of his beta. He flung the shifter he he
"Cade!",Riven barked out the minute he emerged from his room.Cade had been standing close by, waiting for him to come out."Yes Alpha", he responded instantly and moved his body away from the wall he had been leaning on."Get me Alex. And let the rest of the shifters gather at the meeting room. Immediately!"."On it Alpha",Cade said and his eyes turned blurry as he mind linked the entire shifters. Caleb joined him and they both followed Riven to the meeting room, a large open room where Riven always held impromptu meetings concerning the pack.Caleb moved further and opened the door quickly, holding his breath as Riven walked through. The aura surrounding Riven was so dangerous and scary and this only proved how furious he was.Riven settled on one of the chairs in the room. It was a large golden throne seat with a similar one beside it. The other was for his mate and she would sit beside him someday as the Luna of his pack.Cade and Caleb stood on either side of him and watched as t
Layla lowered her eyes slowly, feeling uncomfortable with the intense look Riven gave her. Not that she didn't like it. The look gave her butterflies and made her body tingle deliciously. She was new to these alien feelings she felt and didn't know how to react to it. She watched from under her eyes as Riven walked closer and the bed dipped when he sat beside her."The potions are right there Riven",Henrietta said and pointed towards the table beside the large mirror."Thank you Henrietta. I will tend to her wounds myself",Riven said and nodded at her."Of course. If you need anything else, let me know. The potions will be enough to heal the wound though".After instructing Riven on how to apply each of them, Henrietta exited the room, leaving Riven and his mate to themselves.Layla suddenly wished Henrietta never left. The silence that followed after the door shut behind her was a bit awkward. She wasn't scared of Riven. She knew he wouldn't hurt her. She was just nervous. Apart from
"Will you tell me your name now?",Riven asked. He had been dying to know her name and he felt he would go crazy if she didn't tell him. Layla grabbed hold of the pen and wrote slowly on the parchment.'I am called Layla'"Layla",Riven whispered. The name rolled over his tongue like sweet nectar. It was lovely. A perfect name. He loved it. He looked down at her as she scribbled something else on the parchment.'Which are you? Alpha or Riven?'Riven grinned at the question. She must have heard Cade or Caleb refer to him as Alpha and probably thought that was his name. And since Henrietta always addressed him by his name, she was confused, wanting to know which was his name."I am Riven, my sweet Layla",Riven answered. He watched her blush at the endearment as she began to write again. There was adoration in his eyes as he stared at her. If she had her voice, she would have been very chirpy, inquisitive about everything. He looked down at what she scribbled.'Strange things occured toda
Layla felt her breathe catch in her throat at the beautiful sight before her. She sat up further in the couch, staring at the magnificent golden wolf standing before her.He was huge, about three inches higher than her waist. His fur sparkled like melted gold and it ruffled softly in the cool breeze that blew in from the window. Sharp looking claws curved over the hard tiles on the ground and she could see the outline of the thick muscles under his fur. His fluffy tail that was bronze tipped wagged happily and the sight brought a smile to her lips. It was his eyes that mesmerized her. They were twin pools of hypnotizing golden hue and she felt herself drowning in their depts. The wolf tilted his head to the side with his tongue lolling out and a tinkling laugh escaped Layla. She stretched her hand forward tentatively, wanting to feel his fur on her palm. The wolf sat still so he wouldn't scare her away. It felt like years before she got the courage to touch him. Her fingertips grazed
The silence that followed Alpha Dave's words was deafening. No one spoke. They all stared at the shifter like he was some crazy lunatic.Riven was quiet for a while. And then he laughed, a cold laughter with no trace of humour in it. He took a step closer to Alpha Dave, like a predator stalking his prey."Are you aware",Riven said slowly. "Of the offense of your daughter?".Alpha Dave looked away from the cold light of Riven's eyes and took a step back tentatively."I haven't heard from Cara. I will only believe her words",he said."YOU CALL THE SUPREME ALPHA A LIAR?",Cade roared and shifted fully into his lycan, growling menacingly and ready to pounce on Alpha Dave."Cade!",Riven said and subdued the beta with a furious look. His eyes were changing, a sign of his beast emerging and his canines were slowly elongating. He whipped his eyes towards Alpha Dave and the latter cowered back under the murderous intensity of the Supreme Alpha."You want to see your daughter?",he asked in a dan
