I wondered what the condition could be and hoped it would be one I could afford to fulfill. I took a deep breath and braced myself for what was to come.

"What condition, Father?" a seemingly clueless Klaus asked.

With his eyes still fixed on me, he explained, "Truly, I have no need for your people. I can do without them. And the ancient relic?..." He scoffed. "The last time I saw it was on that night your parents and siblings were killed." I could swear I saw a ghost of a smirk on his face, as though he basked in the pleasure of what he did that night.

I felt anger gnaw at my skin, threatening to consume me. I clenched my hand into a fist, my nails imprinting half-moons in my palm. All I wanted to do at that moment was throw a punch at his face with all my might, but again, I restrained myself, reminding myself of the reason why I was doing all this.

"That ancient relic has been carefully locked away in the basement of this house since that incident," he sighed.
