After dusting the grass off my clothes, I fixed my cloak, then heard Nadine stir. She laid on the grasses, sleeping soundly after our lovemaking.

“You're leaving?” she asked, her voice groggy from sleep.

“I must. The full moon is waning, so the ceremony will draw to a close.”

She rose, and I could hear her collect her clothes from the ground. “When will I see you next?”

“I'll send words,” I said, turning to her. She didn't look pleased with my response, but she nodded anyway. I handed her the parchment, my thoughts occupied with the discovery of Adelaide having a different identity. “Will you be fine on your own?”

“If I say no, will you walk with me to the borders like old times?”

“Nadine,” I drawled.

“It's okay, I understand.” She adjusted my cloak with a smile. “You sure you don’t want to tell me about it yet?” Her eyes met mine lovingly.

I ran my finger down her face, flashing her a subtle smile. “I'll tell you soon.”

“Okay.” She shrugged. “I love you.” She planted a
