Chapter 15: Remoteness

And now everything was different anyway. Jordan wasn't the man he had been in Metro Manila not so long ago. He had become scum, a hopeless junkie, the footman and henchman of one of the most dangerous men in the world. And the worst part was that it didn't mean anything to him anymore. What he did, who he helped, who he portrayed, he had become indifferent.

Jordan stared at the closed curtains, letting the silence and the dull heat wash over him, and almost wished he was able to let the tears building up deep inside him flow freely.

They had been stuck in this godforsaken shack for three days now. During the day the sun beat down on the shabby roof, heating the air beneath until it seemed to glow, while at night the cold of the desert crept through the cracks and crevices, making it impossible to get any sleep.
