Chapter One Hundred: Why?

"I didn't take any test. The psycho has had people following me around."

"What… wait…”

I scratch my head, uncertain if I want to hear the worst part of the news.

The word ‘the psycho’ is too telling.

After taking in a deep breath, I stand from her bed and walk to her.

“Is the ‘worse’ news the father?”

She nods.

Okay, as long as it's not a gangster, it's fine. I have always known that she is a freak magnet, so I’ll set the bar at gangster. We can't both have terrible taste in men.

“Who is the father?”

I ask finally, but Elizabeth folds her mouth as if to swallow any sound coming from her lips.

"Elizabeth."

"It was once, okay! And I never..."

"Who is the father, Elizabeth?"

I press; her stalling is growing more and more frustrating.

"Christopher D'Amico."

My stomach drops, and at the same time, I let go of her hands. They suddenly feel too heavy for me.
