CHAPTER 8

—It's getting dark. —The girl looked worried —What happened to my aunt?

—Don't worry. —I said, calming her concern.

—Hey... I know it's none of my business what happened earlier, but... Are you dating a college boy?

To tell her yes would be something stupid and risky since she could tell others and if someone asked him,... The only one who would be ridiculed would be me so I told her no, we only had some problems because he was making fun of me, she smiled and said she understood very well that feeling of being used only for the benefit of others, her sadness catches my attention.

—But there is something strange about them, they are... kind of pale... besides that boy you called Dalton... How could he suspend you from the ground like that?

Now the one who was starting to worry was me as this girl was asking too many questions. 《I can't believe he's Dalton such a jerk to expose himself like that in front of her》.

—He's a boy, there's nothing weird about that, he's strong, if he wasn't... he wouldn't be on the soccer team.

—How silly. —She laughs to herself —I'm sorry it's just... I got really scared when I saw him attack you like that, I could even swear his eyes changed to red.

I laugh nervously —That's impossible, not even if we lived in a fantasy where things like... witches, werewolves... or vampires exist.

—Yes... you're right.

Just when I was about to say something someone knocked on the door, I thought for a moment it was dad but no, it was another officer who surely works with dad. I ran to where my father was, when I saw that he had a bandage on his head I was scared to hug him.

—Calm down, daughter. —You don't want to kill me with so much love, do you?

—When they told me what happened... I felt like I was dying... Dad, haven't I told you a thousand times to drive carefully?

—I'm fine. —He hugs me and kisses my forehead. —Relax, it was just a few stitches in my head.

He said he didn't know how that happened, for a moment he stopped looking ahead and when he saw the car coming in the opposite direction he tried to avoid it but it hit a tree causing it to overturn, a woman was driving the other car but she suffered a fracture in her foot and neck.

—We investigated the woman. Her name is Ana Lucía Hidalgo.

—What? —I had completely forgotten that the girl was here, and by the way, I still don't know her name. —It's my aunt. Where is she, I have to see her.

She left immediately when she knew where her aunt was, I stepped aside when the nurses were checking my father, seeing him with those scratches on his face my heart couldn't even think about what I would have done if the accident would have happened.

—What a surprise," Dad said remembering the girl, "Who knew that girl was his niece.

I felt bad for her so I told Dad I would go see her, he agreed. I hear some sobbing as a woman speaks sweetly while telling her not to cry that everything is okay but the girl is still crying.

—You are the only family I have left, don't abandon me aunt... please.

—We will always be together. I promised, remember? Besides, you are my spoiled niece, the only thing I have of my brother's, how could I leave you alone?

His crying was of fear and anguish, I don't know what has happened to make him act like that, but I'm sure he has suffered more than me, besides, what about his parents, why does he live with his aunt? The only thing I can think of is that they are dead since her aunt said that was the only thing she had of her brother.

I interrupt with a throat clearing when the girl sees me, she turns her back to me again and wipes her tears, her aunt on the other hand sees me with curiosity and a natural smile expecting me to introduce myself but I waited for her niece to do so

—And you are?

—I'm Serena. Your niece and I met today in high school.

—That's excellent, it's great that you have friends Madison. It seems that already in one day and you get along very well. —Her niece smiles nervously at her. —Your parents must be worried because you escorted my niece all the way here.

—Well I... I wouldn't say that exactly.

I was about to explain what was going on but an officer came by to tell me that Dad was waiting for me to go home and then tells Madison's aunt that she'll be asked a few questions before he leaves.

—I hope your father recovers.

Aunt Madison looks at us in confusion.

—See you in class.

As I left, I clearly heard her ask her who we were talking about so I stopped to listen, she explains what happened and that she had crashed into my dad, I hear a "Not there" from her but I couldn't stay any longer as dad was coming to get me.

When I got home, I helped daddy to his room, I watched him while he is getting settled and I thank heaven that he is by my side, now I feel like Madison, to think that I could have lost him, my world is falling apart, he is the only family I have and he is the best father in the world.

—Don't keep thinking daughter. —I blinked before looking at daddy —I'll be fine. They gave me a week off because of the accident.

—It's good for you to rest. If you need anything...food or something to drink.....

He kisses my forehead and tells me he just wants to sleep so I left him in his room just so he could rest, I for my part went to my room, I thought I would find Antton sitting on the edge of my bed but I didn't, not this time. Looking out my window, I only saw that his mother was outside talking on the phone.

Today, I would have to take the bus as dad couldn't come to drop me off at high school, a car came out, dalton was driving it, another one came out and this time I saw it was him, Antton. I pretended I had seen him, but while I was waiting outside my house for the bus, he stopped in front of me just as my ride was coming.

—Hey, don't wait for me!

I ran to catch the bus but he left thanks to the car that made the driver believe I would be driving away, all I could do is, watch the bus leave and drive away, as I turned on my heels, I saw him outside his car, sitting in the front as if he was enjoying what just happened to me missing the bus.

—Are you happy?

—I'd be lying if I said no.

I inhale deeply to control myself and not explode with anger.
