I’d held dozens of baby farm animals and watched them come into the world. I’d even helped animals birth in the wild. But little could prepare me for Alice shifting in my arms. It seemed painful for her and I hated that, didn’t she shift on a regular basis? I knew she was at least a year older than me, by now it should be as easy as breathing.

I watched curiously as her bones moved and her skin contorted, her white fur giving way to her tanned skin, a little red and blotchy from the shift. Her face finally formed and her features appeared, she blinked rapidly, taking me in.
