Plot

The plot in "The Luna Choosing Game" begins with an instance of sexual harassment against Piper by her abusive boss. She had endured this uncomfortable situation out of fear of becoming jobless amid a very chaotic economy in the Werewolf Kingdom, especially considering she was in charge of a very sickly little girl called Elva, whose medical bills were no less than onerous.

Upon arriving home after that unsavory scene, Piper's best friend and roommate, Anna, confronts her, saying she should stick up for herself and demand respect. Afterwards, Anna turned on the TV and tuned in for the evening news when, suddenly, a very strange headline appeared, titled "The Luna Selection."

It was during this broadcast that Piper found out that her ex-boyfriend, Nicholas, had become a Prince and was looking for a Luna. However, Piper knew that she would get disqualified just on account of being a single mother. Regardless, Anna was adamant about helping Piper improve her current situation and, hence, applied on Piper's behalf. Surprisingly, she was chosen as a likely candidate and was therefore summoned to the Palace.

There, she'd meet Nicholas, who initially appeared to not recognize her. However, not much after, he would swiftly start accusing her of having hidden his child from him, not knowing that Elva was, in fact, her nephew and only became her foster child following her twin sister's death.

This incident would mark the start of a very tense relationship. From Piper's viewpoint, whatever bond had been formed in the past was already broken, and her whole purpose was to seek Elva's wellbeing, though her feelings for Nicholas have not totally waned. Nicholas, on the other hand, had lots of candidates lined up, but he still strangely ended up with Piper despite her obvious handicaps and his suspicions regarding Elva's biological mother.

Characters

Piper

Piper is the female lead of this tale. She's a very talented and intelligent woman, once considered a top student at the Royal Academy, notwithstanding the fact she had very humble origins. She also lost her wolf, one of the worst tragedies that could befall a werewolf aside from death. Now, she has to work 14-hour shifts at a restaurant to make it to month's end.

The word that most aptly describes Piper is self-denial, which is manifested in her unconditional love for Elva, the orphaned nephew whom she took under her care after her sister's demise.

Nicholas

Nicholas is among the most important people in the Werewolf Kingdom, being the heir to the throne (unbeknownst to Piper), as well as the most handsome man in the Royal Family. He's a very family-oriented person with a particular fondness for children. He was very kind to Piper when they were first dating, albeit he had turned bitter towards her after she broke up with him.

Chapter 4

The Royal Guards arrive at Piper's workplace to shut it down and take down her abusive boss. She then glances at the TV screen and finds out that her name was on the Luna candidates' list, though she doesn't remember enrolling in the selection process. In any case, she's asked to grab her belongings and move to the palace.

When Piper arrives home to pick up Elva and arrange her luggage, Anna confesses she submitted the candidacy on Piper's behalf, to the latter's annoyance.

Chapter 6

Nicholas attempts to humiliate Piper, claiming she dumped Elva's father (her supposed "lover") to try her chance with him again but that he wouldn't take her back.

Later, she has an audience with the King and Queen, expecting to be rejected by them. However, to her surprise, the King prompts her and Elva to stay.

Chapter 100

There's a very intense feud between Nicholas and his Brother Julian during a ball over who'd dance with Piper. After pondering for a long period, she chooses Julian, but Nicholas pretends not to be fazed by that choice, to Piper's disappointment.

Theme

The theme in "The Luna Choosing Game" revolves around the concepts of pride and self-love as opposed to self-sacrifice.

Nicholas (the male lead) treats Piper with scorn for he admits she was the first woman to dump him. It's for this reason that, while he could theoretically conquer any woman he wants, he gets fixated on Piper and strives to humiliate her in an attempt to restore his wounded self-esteem. Conversely, Piper is characterized by selflessness, willing to withstand humiliation for her foster daughter's sake, including that coming from Nicholas himself.

That said, it must be clarified that Piper also occasionally shows signs of selfishness, while Nicholas has moments of admirable self-abnegation, so both characters are not meant to represent polar opposites.

Lastly, this novel hammers home the notion that one can't actually choose who to love, even if looks or social status could admittedly provide an important head start when looking for a special someone.

Author Introduction

Jane Above Story is a prolific writer who has published tons of fictional works, including "The Luna And Her Quadruplet Pups" and "Alpha King's Substitute Omega Bride." She specializes in Werewolf stories, and you may follow her latest releases over at her linktr.ee page.

The writing style displayed in "The Luna Choosing Game" is tasteful and detailed, with special attention to the characters' inner struggles as well as the events that occur at the forefront. Jane Above Story also likes to imprint an air of mystery into the narrative, leaving gaps that readers must fill with their own imagination.

"Jane Above Story" writes the entire novel from Piper's point of view. Thus, we get a purview of her own interpretations of the events, so readers are almost expected to empathize with her more than the rest of the cast. Notwithstanding, there's still more than enough information to figure out what the other characters think and feel.

Conclusion

"The Luna Choosing Game" takes readers on a very emotional journey that promises to leave a lasting impression. Piper's character arc is very compelling, but moreso that of Nicholas, a very enigmatic male lead with an unclear alignment, prideful yet at times very soft (especially towards children).

Also worthy of mention is the novel's pacing. Some may claim that 170+ chapters is too much, but the novel doesn't feel tedious to read or draggy. Granted, it's not yet finished and much can still be added, but, so far, we don't find its length annoying.

In synthesis, "The Luna Choosing Game" is a novel that's well worth keeping an eye on!
