DAUNTING

"Let's begin this chapter shall we?"

.........

Grasping the straps of my backpack, I walked into the building oozing as much confidence as I could. Since I always kept a straight face and never really showed any emotion no one could tell how nervous I was. On the inside, I was a wreck. For the first time in my life, I felt...intimidated. Taking a deep breath I keep on walking until I reach the hallway where all the students had their lockers.

I had about five minutes left before my first class would start. My eyes moved from one locker to the next as I searched for the one that had my alphanumeric ID.

I looked at my laminated schedule. It had my locker ID on it.

"V-ADVG001," I keep on repeating this as I reach the end of the hallway. Many students were gathered there. I didn't know what to do. Should I go away or should I see what's going on?.

Sigh. I walk to where the students were gathered and spot a golden locker with my ID on it. Pushing past some students I finally stand in front of it and input my passcode, I open it. It was quite bigger than most of the other lockers I saw on my way here.

Still aware of the students looking at me in confusion, with my schedule in one hand I quickly take out my tablet from my bag. Throwing my bag rather carelessly into the locker, I slam it shut and lock it.

Irritated, I walk away as fast as possible looking at my smartwatch.

"Oh no," I said to myself "I'm late".

Just as I begin to run to my first class, the bell rings. The hallways are completely empty. I climb the next flight of stairs and search the whole floor.

"Nope not here," I said to myself.

"300 advanced and gifted," that's where I'm going. I climb the next flight of stairs which I assume should be the third floor. I check the first, second and third classrooms, not there either.

I let out a disgruntled groan as I walk to the last classroom on that floor. I check my watch only to see that I'm already five minutes late.

"Yes!!!!," I exclaimed as I read the gold plated sign above the door. "300 advanced and gifted".

I kick the door of the classroom open.

"How dare you barge into my cl...," the teacher yells angrily but soon calms down as soon as she looks at me.

"You must be Alexa Whittier," she says but I pay no attention to her. Instead, I scan the room for an empty seat. Finally seeing one at the back of the classroom, I quickly walk to it. Easing into it I seat up straight and listen to what the teacher has to say.

"It's a pleasure to have someone like you here at our school," she says but not without causing a stir from the students. They start whispering to each other.

"Who could she possibly be?".

"It's not like she's Einstein".

"Is she famous?" I couldn't help but roll my eyes at that comment.

"I saw her this morning, I think she's the new girl with the golden locker".

"She can't be the new smartest student, could she?".

"No way, not when the ADV5 are still here". I frown when I hear that statement.

"What's ADV5?" I quietly ask myself.

"Quiet down everyone," the teacher shouts at the students to stop.

"So, the student sitting right behind you all is Alexa Whittier," she says as all of them turn in their seats to look at me.

"She's been homeschooled for a very..."

"Stop it," I scream at the teacher. She looks at me in confusion.

"Are you seriously going to tell them about me?" I ask her clearly angry.

"Well, yes. That's how it's done here. Everyone knows everyone," she says with a smirk on her face.

"That's just freaking shit," I hiss as I stand up from my seat slamming my hand on the desk. I gather my things and walk up to the front of the class.

"I'll introduce myself by myself," I say to the teacher.

In a loud and clear voice, I begin.

"My name is Alexa Whittier and I've been homeschooled for a long time. I love dissecting insects and small animals and I won't hesitate to dissect anyone of you if you irritate me".

Feeling extremely content with what I said I walk out of the class.

"What the hell just happened?" I hear a student shout excitedly as I finally leave.

...........

I don't know why I did what I did but I did it anyway. Today was meant to start off as great but I guess things don't always go the way you plan it, does it?

I look at my smartwatch only to find out it's twenty minutes past eight. I decide not to go to any of my classes for the rest of the day. People are exhausting and I've had enough of them already.

Walking down the stairs and out of the building I head straight to the library.

"Hmmm, I think I'll spend the rest of my day here," I say to myself.

Seating is a very secluded area of the library, I bury myself in an astrophysics textbook. I wasn't really reading, I was thinking. I do this a lot and I don't know why. I guess I'm just sad. I try not to think about my past. It always makes me so devastated and enraged but I can't help it. I think about it anyways. Sigh.

"What an interesting choice of book you have there," a boy says as he seats in front of me.

I pay no attention to him thinking he'll leave but instead seems to be even more comfortable.

"We both know this is a school for smart kids and being smart has its perks but do you really think people come here, to the library to read," he says not really asking.

I flip to the next page of my book ignoring him.

He continues speaking. "If I may ask, what's your name?".

Gosh, he talks a lot. Having had enough of him I stand up gathering my things and look for somewhere else to seat.

I hear footsteps behind me. Quickly I  turn around and slam! I thought I hit a wall but no, it was that stupid annoying boy that wouldn't let me be. For the first time since our conversation, I have a proper look at his face.

"Hi," he smiles at me rubbing slow circles up and down my arms steadying me. His smile makes me want to, smile. Is that even possible?.

I want to push him aside but I can't. Those eyes, those beautiful mesmerizing icy blue eyes have me under some sort of spell. My eyes move to look at other features of his face. He's very attractive no doubt about that. His hair is as golden as the sun, same with his eyebrows. He's clean-shaven but has some stubble on his chin when you look closely. He has some pretty strong features. Oh, my poor heart! I sigh.

Still rubbing slow circles on my arms, he takes a step closer to me covering up the space between us. At this moment I'm lost beneath his gaze, frozen solid.

"Push him away," I mentally scream at myself. My knees feel weak, I can feel my tummy flip a million times per second, my heart is racing and I feel like a freaking live wire but still, I don't budge. I like this feeling. What's wrong with me?!!!

He leans in and I can't help myself but do the same. His nose brushes mine. I'm on cloud nine. This is so amazing!!!

I close my eyes as his lips brush the helix of my ear. He whispers,

"By the way, my name is Cameron Durand," he slowly pulls away from me smiling. I'm in a trance. What has this boy done to me?.

He tries to lean in again but this time I slap him and push him away.

I quickly run to pick up my things that lay on the floor. I didn't even know they were there thanks to this moronic human being.

I decide to leave the library since I know he'll continue to pester me. Honestly, I was really scared.

"What happened back there?" I quietly ask myself. This thing he made me feel was utterly new to me and I liked it. I just couldn't comprehend it.

I walk to the seniors' building. I needed to get out of here. My first day wasn't supposed to go like this. It isn't even noon yet and I'm a mess. I hastily walk to my locker to get my bag.

..............

I finally found a comfortable and tranquil spot in the school's field up in an oak tree. I couldn't read because my tablet was already filled with things I had learnt over and over years ago. Also, I couldn't draw because I had no material with me. I couldn't do anything.

I looked around the field. It was truly beautiful. I close my eyes and breathe in the fresh air. Minutes after I fall asleep.

..........

Sniff, sniff...

"Atchoo, atchoo...," I sneeze continuously.

"What the hell is that? Atchoo," I say to myself as I slowly open my eyes. I frown as I see a long-haired brunette with a short fringe wearing huge glasses in front of me. She holds a flower under my nose and continues to tickle me with it.

"Atchoo. Stop that," I say as my nose starts to run.

"Works every time," the girl says with a smirk.

"What are you doing here?" I ask her clearly irritated and angry that she disturbed my sleep.

"I should be asking you that?" She says with a frown.

"I haven't seen you around here though. You must be new. I'm sure you are," she squints at me.

"Hi, I'm Geneva Vanderbilt. What's your name?" She says cheerily.

"Alexa Whittier," I say raising an eyebrow.

"This is very awkward for me. I mean I wouldn't have thought I'll be introducing myself to someone up in a tree," I close my eyes as I pinch the bridge of my nose.

"I'm so sorry for disturbing you Alexa. It's just that this tree is my thinking spot,"  she says sadly.

"Whatever," I roll my eyes as I take a glance at my watch.

"I need to leave," I start climbing down the tree. She follows me.

"Oh wow, you're pretty tall for a girl. Let me guess 5'11," Geneva says as she looks me over.

"Yup," I say with a tight-lipped smile.

"Where are you heading to now?" She asks.

"Home," I say in a monotone voice.

"That's not possible. As long as the school isn't over, you aren't sick or your parent isn't here you can't leave".

"I see. I guess I'll be heading back to my tree now".

"Why?" she asks a bit confused.

"I haven't been to any of my classes. They're stupid and I'm not even learning anything".

I turn around and start heading back to the tree but Geneva quickly grabs my hands and starts walking towards the seniors' building.

"What are you doing?" I say angrily as I try to release my hand from her tight grip.

"Since you have nothing to do you're going to follow me to my next class and I'm sure you'll be able to learn something," she smiles at me.

"Alright then," I say.

I follow her out of curiosity. I wanted to know what it was that I could possibly learn.

After climbing some flights of stairs we finally reach the classroom.

"Welcome to the Calculus BC class," She says as she kicks the door of the classroom open.

"What?" I say with my mouth hanging open.
