Chapter Four - It's killing him

Freya Rose

After sending Mason hurtling through the wall, it was no surprise to me that he had left all of a sudden and was completely avoiding me. I guess I'd hurt his macho pride or some shit, but I really didn't care by this point. I'd had quite enough of supernatural men suddenly deciding that I belonged to them. Like, I was some sort of damn object, or prize to be won. First Balan, the vampire who played games with my head, hurt the people I loved, and didn't even have the balls to face me himself. Then Mason telling me that I couldn't go home, and that was his, just because of some damn mystical angel connection. That I only found out about five freaking minutes ago, I might add.

“I've had enough, I want to leave,” I shouted at Damien.

He was standing right next to me just gawping at the giant hole that Mason's body had left in his wall. You could see right through into the living room, and Evan was on the other side just peering through it with a massive smirk on his face.

“I'm sorry about your wall. I'll pay to have it fixed,” I said to Damien. I did kinda feel bad about the wall.

“Ahem, no it's fine Freya. Mason can pay for it, it's all his fault anyway. He knew what could happen if he pissed you off while you were in your full ascension form. And of course, you can leave, I'll go and fetch your bag. Evan can drive you wherever you'd like,” he said in a sad voice, then left to go get my bag.

“Dude, I can't believe you threw Mason through a wall on your first ascension. That's so badass,” Evan said, seeming extremely impressed by my strength.

He climbed through the hole in the wall and flopped down onto the couch. I laughed and then replied softly,

“Is Mason going to be okay?”

I knew he damn well deserved it, but I was starting to feel a little sorry for him. After all, he had been a hunter all his life. I was new to it all, I was a girl, and I just totally kicked his ass in front of his leader and his cousin. I'd feel pretty damn shitty too if that was me.

“Yeah, he'll be fine, it's not the first wall Mason's gone through,” he chuckled then continued, “I bet his pride and his feelings are hurting more right now. I know you don't feel the same way about him, but Mason has been waiting for his Fianna all his life. He was so excited to have finally found you, Freya,” he said as he stood up, and made his way to the door.

Oh, great. Now I feel like a complete bitch. Urgh, why can't I just go back to a few weeks ago, my life was so much easier back then, but it feels like that was a lifetime ago now. I sighed and followed after Evan. Damien came down the stairs with my bag, and then hugged me with one arm.

“I'm sorry about everything, Freya. If I'd have known, I would never have left you or your mom. I hope you can forgive me someday; I love you,” he whispered into my ear then squeezed me tight.

“Give me your phone number, we can chat some more on the phone and get to know each other a bit better. I just need some time to let all this sink in a bit, if that's okay?”

I wasn't ready to forgive him by a long shot, but he seemed nice enough, and I did need to find out more about being a hunter and how to control myself.

“Uh, yeah, of course. One sec,” he held his finger up at me and then ran off into his office, then returned like an excited child with a writing pad and a pen. That is actually quite cute, I thought to myself. “Here is my mobile number, home, office and email address. Contact whenever you want, day or night,” he said as he wrote each contact detail down.

He handed me the piece of paper. I chuckled at his eagerness and leaned in to give him a hug.

“I will, bye dad,” I said knowing it would make him feel good to hear me call him dad.

He pulled me back and smiled at me, then said in an emotional voice,

“I’m so proud of you, Freya.” His eyes began to well up, and I'll be completely honest, it made me feel a little uncomfortable.

I don't know what I'll do if he starts crying.

“We best get going, Freya.” Evan interrupted.

I think he was trying to save Damien the embarrassment of crying like a little girl in front of me.

“Yeah, sounds cool,” I waved to Damien and followed Evan out to the car.

I stood at the car for a few seconds with my hand on the door handle. I was hoping that Mason would have come back by now, so that I could say goodbye, but there was no sign of him. I opened the door and got into the car. I looked out of the front window and off into the woods, but he still didn't show.

“You ready?” Evan asked as he turned on the engine.

“Yup.”

I looked away from the woods and put my seatbelt on.

“Okay, where to, Angel cakes?”

“Don't call me, Angel cakes!” I snapped in a disgusted voice. I tried to make my power surge and punched him in the arm. “Ow, damn it!” I yelled out while clutching my fist, Evan just burst out laughing at me.

“Oh shit!” He yelled when he lost control of the car and we swerved onto the grass.

He eventually managed to calm himself down and get us back onto the dirt road.

“It's not that freaking funny, I think I broke my knuckle, you damn jerk!” I whined at him, while still tightly clutching my hand.

“It will be fine Freya, we heal fast remember, and besides what were you trying to do exactly?” He asked while trying to hold back his laughter.

“I was trying to build up my power and punch you really hard, angel style,” I proclaimed.

“Well, I guess you're gonna need some training then, huh, Angel cakes?” He said bursting into laughter again.

I couldn't help myself and laughed along with him. We got to the end of the dirt road, ready to finally leave the property, when we heard an almighty ear-piercing screech. I shot my head around to look behind us, but I couldn't see anything. Evan pulled the car over. I undone my seatbelt and got out of the car. I stood there looking into the woods and heard another screech. I watched as the startled birds flew up and out of the trees, then a brilliant white light shot up into the sky from the middle of the woods.

“Mason's heart is breaking. He knows he's losing his Fianna,” Evan said in a low and sad voice as he put his arm around my shoulder. I rested my head on his chest and sighed.

I felt bad for Mason; I really did. He had waited for me for a very long time, and I guess he thought that once he found me, we would stay together forever. He never would've expected his Fianna to be in love with somebody else, especially not a werewolf.

“Evan, can you do me a favor?” I asked as I turned around and looked up at him.

“Of course, Angel cakes. Anything,” he said with a laugh.

I rolled my eyes as I thought, I don't think I'm getting away from that nickname any time soon.

“Can you give Mason my phone number? I'd like to keep in touch if he's okay with that. I do care for him a lot, and I hate knowing that I'm hurting him so much,” I said in a low voice as I looked back into the woods.

The light was gone, I hope he's going to be okay. I thought.

“Sure, I think he'll like that. Well, once he's calmed down a bit that is,” he said as he pulled his phone from his pocket.

I programmed in my number, and then saved it as Angel cakes. Evan giggled and hugged me with one arm when he saw what I'd put my name as.

“Come on, Angel cakes, let's get going. Oh, that's a point, where are we going to exactly?” He asked as he began to walk around the car. I jumped back into my seat and said,

“To my nana's please driver,” he chuckled and replied,

“Yes ma' lady,” while lifting an imaginary hat off of his head.

I giggled and we pulled away. I heard one last ear-piercing screech as we made it onto the main road. I looked out of the back window and saw the light beam again. I slumped back in my seat and sighed.

“He'll be fine, Freya, I'll make sure of it.”

I'd given Evan the address to my nana's, and it turned out that she was only half an hour away. Which was awesome, I was so tired, and I think that I could have passed out at any second. We pulled up outside of my grandparent's house, Evan turned off the engine then looked over to me.

“It was great meeting you, Angel cakes. Look, I know you don't love Mason, but if that wolf ever hurts you, I know Mason will be there for you in a heartbeat. Well after he snaps the little mutt's neck for hurting his Fianna. Actually, he might have to get in line, behind Damien and me,” he said to me with a nervous laugh.

I think he was trying to tell me that he cared for me, and that he was going to miss me, but in a typical macho guy fashion he was really messing it up. I raised an eyebrow at his babbling, and he lowered his head and said, “um, sorry Freya, what I'm trying to say is... Um...” He stuttered.

I placed my hand on his chin and lifted his head up.

“I'm gonna miss you too Evan,” I said in a sweet voice.

A huge grin grew across his face and he lunged at me, and then hugged me hard. I giggled and kissed him on his cheek.

“Right, let's get your bag,” he said with a blush then got out of the car.

He went to the trunk and pulled out my bag. I took the bag from him and hugged him again.

“Thanks for the ride, I'll speak to you soon I promise,” I said as I let go of him.

“Your welcome, Angel cakes.”

I closed my eyes and thought of Balan the vampire Prince, rage quickly built up within me, and my eyes began to pulse. I knew I had the angel power now, so I quickly turned around and punched him full pelt in the arm.

“Argh, what the hell, Angel cakes?” He yelled as he grabbed his arm.

“That's what you get for calling me, Angel cakes.”

I poked my tongue out at him and threw my bag over my shoulder, before walking up the path towards my grandparent's house. I turned back to look at Evan and he was laughing and shaking his head while still rubbing his arm.

“I'll get you back for that,” he shouted at me as he got back into his car. I shot him a cheeky wink, and I could hear him cackling while he drove away, I chuckled to myself as I reached the front door.

I knocked on the door and waited for someone to answer. My mom answered the door while in the middle of a conversation with my nana. When she turned around to look who was at the door, she almost fell over.

“Freya!” She squealed. “What are you doing here?” She said as she pulled me in for a hug.

“I thought I'd surprise you guys,” I replied while trying to breathe.

“Mom look who's here,” My mom shouted through the house.

“If it's that Mrs. Jones from down the street, tell her I don't give a rats ass if the dog shit in her garden again,” my nana shouted in reply.

I giggled as my mom quickly pulled me into the house and slammed the door behind me.

“Mom, shh, the whole neighborhood can hear you!” My mom shouted with embarrassment in her voice.

“I don't care a shit, that woman drives me crazy. She's always moaning about something. She... Freya,” she rambled on then shouted out my name when she finally saw me.

She slowly got up out of her chair and waddled over to greet me. I hugged her while I was still giggling.

My nana Briony cracked me up. If you hadn't guessed, she was where I got my terrible mouth from. My mom was nothing like us, she was very conservative like my granddad.

“Hey Brendan, you old fart, you awake out there?” She shouted through to the guest room just off of the living room.

“Yes, why?” He shouted back through.

“Go on through Freya, he will love the surprise. Don't give him a heart attack though, I need him around a little bit longer,” my nana said as she giggled to herself and then sat back down.

My mom just shook her head at my nana's antics then pointed to my bag, I nodded knowing that she wanted to put it in my room. I turned away and strolled off into the guest room.

“Hey, granddad,” I said quietly not knowing what to expect.

I needn't have worried though, he looked great. He was sat up in bed with a little table on wheels, doing his crosswords. He looked up at me and lowered his head to look over his reading glasses.

“Freya my beautiful girl, what a lovely surprise. Come here,” he said as he ushered me over to him with his hands.

I approached the bed and gave him a big hug, then asked him,

“How are you feeling?”

He patted my back and replied,

“I'm doing good, can't bring this old dog down.”

I chuckled and pulled away to sit in the chair next to his bed. As I sat down, I let out a huge yawn.

“Oh, excuse me,” I said instantly. Gotta be polite around the oldies, I giggled to myself.

“You look exhausted, Freya,” he said with his eyes laced with concern.

“I'm okay granddad, just haven't been sleeping too good lately. I'll be alright once I get some proper rest,” I said, and then yawned again.

My mom walked in as I was finishing my yawn.

“Did you not get any sleep on the bus honey?” She asked while rubbing my back.

“Na, there were a lot of people and distractions on the bus,” I replied as I struggled to keep a grin off of my face, when I thought of Mason. My grin faded when I remembered how much I had just hurt him.

“Well, it's five o’clock now, you can go and get your head down for a bit if you like? Then I'll wake you up later for some dinner,” my mom suggested.

“Really? That would be awesome, thank you mom,” I replied quickly.

I got up out of my chair and kissed my granddad on the cheek, then my mom, before I rushed out of the door. I heard them both laugh. I was going to kiss my nana too, but I saw that she'd fallen asleep, so I ran up the stairs and straight into my room. I quickly put my phone on charge then ran through into the bathroom for a pee. I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror and stopped for a second to look.

“Wow, you look like crap,” I said to my reflection.

I had a pee, then decided a shower was in order. I threw my clothes in the dirty washing bin and hopped into the shower. After I'd finished and wrapped a towel around myself. I brushed my teeth, and hair, then went back into the bedroom to get some shorts and a strappy top from my bag. I got dressed then closed the drapes and slipped into bed.

“Oh, my days, that feels so good,” I said aloud as I snuggled up in bed and drifted off to sleep.

 ***

I awoke to sunshine peering in through the sides of my drapes. I wondered what the time was, so I decided to look at my phone. I picked it up and realized I'd forgotten to turn it on, when I put it on charge. I held the button in and waited for it to turn on.

Ding, ding, ding...

My phone went crazy with tons of notifications, once it finally stopped going berserk, I looked at it. Fear consumed me when I read that I had around forty missed calls, ten text messages and five voicemails. They were mostly from Tyler and Clara, which I expected as he told me they had been trying to get a hold of me all day yesterday. I also had a few missed calls from Damien, a few from Evan and one from a new number. I decided to read the messages first. They didn't say much, just the expected really.

Ring me!

Message me!

Where are you?

Answer me, please!

I deleted them one by one then moved over to the voicemails.

Voicemail number one;

“Freya where the hell are you? Why aren't you picking up your phone? Urgh, ring me back asap,” Tyler said angrily down the phone.

He sounded really pissed, but I'd already spoken to him since this was left, so I ignored it and deleted it.

Voicemail number two;

“Freya, I just wanted to say that I am so sorry for what I did, and for what I said to you in the car. I know that you're a strong girl, and I shouldn't have taken my own worries out on you. Please come back so that I can apologize properly. I love you,” Clara said apologetically down the phone.

She sounded so guilty, I felt bad for her, she thought it was all her fault that I left. I would have a chat with her when I got back, what I had to say would be better in person. I decided to keep the message because it was sweet.

Voicemail number three;

“Freya it's your dad... I mean Damien. Something's happened, you need to call me back as soon as you get this. Okay bye,” Damien said on the other end of the phone. He sounded really stressed and panicked, I heard the time on the message, and this was eleven o’clock yesterday evening.

What the hell? What is the time now? I thought as I looked at my phone clock.

“Shit!” I said aloud, it said five in the morning. Damn it! I thought.

I deleted the message and quickly moved on to the next one, thinking it would be from Damien to explain a little bit more.

Voicemail number four;

“Freya please answer the phone. I tried to calm Mason down, but I couldn’t, and he has gone after Tristan. Damien and I are following after him, hopefully, we can get there before he does something stupid. Just ring me back!” Evan said frantically down the phone. He left that frantic message at midnight.

Oh my God, I thought to myself, as my heart began pounding and tears started to fill up my eyes. I kept that message and went to the last one, hoping to God it wasn't Tyler saying that Tristan was dead.

“Voicemail number five, received at four-thirty A.M,” the computerized voice stated.

It started, and as soon as it did, my heart sank when I heard Mason's crackled voice, it was filled with such pain and tears.

“Freya, I know you don't love me right now, but I have a plan. Once I've killed Tristan you will be free to fall in love with me like the angel's planned. You will hate me for a while, but we are meant to be together, and the angel's will help me get you back. I love you Fianna, you are mine,” Mason said with such emotion, he sounded broken and delusional.

What the hell was I going to do? How could I save Tristan? What if he's already killed him? I began to cry as my thoughts took over. Suddenly I heard Tyler screaming over the phone,

“Hey, who the hell are you? Get the fuck out of my brother's room!”

My head tilted back instantly, letting the light shoot out of my eyes and mouth, my bright white wings ripped through my skin as I let out my screech. My ascension was completed just as the voicemail ended with Clara screaming,

“No. Please. Someone please, get that thing off of my son, it's killing him!”
