Born To Kill: Her Sister's Secret

“Primo, I’ll be in our room. If I fall asleep, just wake me up.” He didn’t look at me but he nodded. I walked up to him and I gave him a kiss on the cheek. I left his office and I went inside our room. I turned the TV on but I wasn’t interested in watching anything so I decided to take a quick nap. I woke up when Primo gave me a light nudge. I looked at my phone and it was almost 1. I stood up and went to the bathroom to freshen up. I stepped out and Primo was waiting for me. We went outside and he opened the passenger’s side for me. I stepped in and he closed the door. He walked to the other side and he got in.

He started the engine and we drove off. “Are you hungry?” I shook my head. “I’m not hungry yet.” I put my hand on his thigh and he held it. “How about after we pick Marina up, we go out for lunch?” I smiled. “That’d be great.” He smiled but he still kept his eyes on the road. We arrived in JFK International Airport just when Marina’s plane landed. We waited for her by the exit. I stood on my tiptoes to look for her but I couldn’t see past all the people. Primo held my hand and pointed somewhere. “Marina’s here.” I still couldn’t see her but when most of the people left, I saw her.

“Luna!” She ran to our direction and gave me a hug. I hugged her and she was crying. “I’m so glad you’re here. I missed you so much.” She was still hugging me which made a tear escape from my eye. She let me go and I wiped the tears from her eyes. “Do you have all your stuff?” She nodded. Primo took her bag which made me smile. “It’s okay Primo. I can carry that. It’s just one bag.” Primo shook his head. He went outside towards the car and he put Marina’s bag inside the trunk.

“What a gentleman.” I looked at her because I was confused with her tone. She must’ve noticed me staring. “I’m serious. He’s a gentleman.” I smiled. We went on our way to the car and Primo opened the door to let Marina in. I took my seat on the passenger’s side and Primo in the driver’s seat. Primo started the engine. “Where do you want to eat?” Marina looked at me. “I want Luna to cook. I miss your cooking.” Primo looked at me and smiled. “I agree with that.” I giggled. “Okay, I’ll cook your favorite, Marina.” She looked like she was about to explode from excitement.

“Lasagna!” I giggled and Primo held my hand. I looked at Marina and she was watching Primo’s hand. “Oh Marina, Niccolo seemed excited to see you. He’ll be joining us for dinner later.” She suddenly became quiet which was unusual for her. I looked at Primo and he squeezed my hand. I was starting to worry. “Marina, are you okay?” She didn’t answer. Suddenly she smiled and started talking about something else. “Since you left for New York, I’ve been alone most of the time.” I sighed. “Don’t worry Marina. You’ll be staying here for some time. I’ll keep you company.” She smiled.

We arrived in Primo’s mansion and when Marina stepped out of the car, her jaw dropped. “You have a beautiful house.” Primo didn’t answer. He took out Marina’s bag and we went inside. Isla opened the door and politely welcomed Marina. Primo carried Marina’s bag to her room. I showed her the room where she’ll be staying. She thanked Primo for carrying her bag. Primo nodded and she entered the room. Primo and I went back to our room to change.

“You’re such a gentleman.” I wrapped my arms around his neck and he wrapped his around my waist. “I promised to be on my best behavior.” I smiled and gave him a kiss. I changed into a black shirt and my pajamas. “I’m going downstairs to cook. Any request?” Primo looked at me and smiled. “Surprise me.” I smiled and went out of the room. I went to Marina’s room and knocked on the door. “Sis, I’m going to cook now, do you want to watch?” A few seconds later and she opened the door looking as excited as a kid getting candy.

We went to the kitchen and she sat on the counter. I went to the pantry to grab the ingredients. “He’s treating you right, I presume?” I looked at her and smiled. “Yes, dear sister. He’s treating me right.” I started to make the sauce for the lasagna. “It’s my turn to ask questions, Marina. What happened between you and Niccolo?” I faced her and she avoided my gaze. “What are you talking about?” I walked up to her and looked her in the eyes. “Don’t lie to me. I know when something’s wrong, Marina.” She sighed.

“Something happened between us.” My eyes widened. “What happened?” She scratched the back of her head before answering. “I don’t want to talk about it Luna. Let’s just say, we did something we weren’t supposed to do.” She started to blush. I was in complete shock. I turned around and continued to cook. “Luna, are you okay?” I didn’t answer. I’m giving her the silent treatment until she admits what she did. I made special garlic bread for Primo and I put the lasagna in the oven.

“Luna…” I still didn’t answer. I went to the living room to clear my head. The lasagna still has a few more minutes in the oven. Marina followed me. “Talk to me please.” I didn’t say anything. I looked out the glass doors. “Okay I’m sorry. We just kissed. That was it.” I looked at her with a dead-serious expression on my face. She seemed intimidated. “I swear to God that was it.” I exhaled. Oh thank God it was just a kiss. I walked back to the kitchen to check on the lasagna. It wasn’t cooked yet.

“When?” I asked with a monotonous voice. She lowered her head. “Do you have to ask that? When was the last time we saw each other?” I thought about it and when realization hit me, my eyes widened. “You kissed him on my wedding day?” I unconsciously raised my voice. Marina covered my mouth but I pushed her hand away. “Ssssshhhh… Not so loud. I don’t want Primo to know.” I rolled my eyes. “He already knows. If Primo and Niccolo are anything like us, most likely they tell each other everything.”

“I’m sorry Luna. I should’ve told you but I was too scared.” I sighed. I walked up to her and gave her a hug. “It’s fine. I forgive you. But please practice your self-control. I don’t want you to lose anything important.” She giggled and nodded. I walked over to the oven and checked on the lasagna. It was cooked to perfection and I took it out of the oven. Marina helped me prepare the table. I walked upstairs to Primo’s office. I always knock first.

“Food’s ready.” He was obviously working. He looked up for a second and gave me a small nod. “Are you busy? I could bring you food so you can eat here in your office.” He looked at me and smiled. I walked over to him. “I just need to finish this today.” I nodded and he gave me a quick kiss. I walked out of his office and I went downstairs.

“Where’s Primo?” Marina was already seated on the dining table. “He’s busy with work. I’ll bring him his food.” I took two slices of lasagna and a few slices of garlic bread and I put it on his plate. “You’re such a good wife Luna.” Marina teased. I smiled. I took a tray from the kitchen and I placed the plate on it. “I’ll be right back but if you’re really hungry, you can eat without me.” She nodded and I went on my way back to Primo’s office. I knocked on the door before I went in.

“You know you don’t have to knock every time you come in here.” I smiled. “I don’t want to disturb you.” I placed the tray next to his laptop. “Call me if you’re done so I can bring the dishes back down to the kitchen.” I was about to leave when he grabbed my arm and spun me back to him. His hands were around my waist. “You really are the perfect wife.” I looked at him and his face showed sincerity which was a good sign.

“I wonder, how do you hide all these emotions from other people?” His lips curled into a wry smile. “Simple. I don’t trust them.” I cupped his face. “Does that mean you trust me?” He looked at me with amused eyes. “You haven’t given me a reason not to.” I felt relieved. He lowered his head so our lips would meet. He gave me a tender kiss before letting me go. I went back down to the dining room and I noticed that Marina still hadn't touched the food.

“Thank you for waiting for me.” She smiled and I took my seat next to her. “So Luna, did you and Primo have sex yet?” Her question surprised me. I almost dropped the whole garlic bread platter. “Not yet.” She seemed disappointed. “Will you have sex while I’m here?” I looked at her. “Definitely not. I asked Primo to refrain from any sexual activities while you’re here.” She slumped on her chair. I put a slice of lasagna on her plate and she ate it. We talked about how they were doing when I left. She keeps telling me that Salva was almost never around because of Father.

“Where do they go?” Marina took another slice of lasagna and put it on her plate. “I don’t know but one night when they came home, Salva was wounded and Papa had to call the mob doctor.” I felt worried. Salvatore is still a young boy and I want him to enjoy his youth but I couldn’t do anything. He has to do all of this because when Papa retires, he’ll be next in line. “What happened to him?” Marina took a bite before she spoke. “When he woke up, he told me that they were ambushed. It was a good thing that they managed to kill all of them.” I exhaled slowly.

“The other night, Primo came back covered in blood. He had a huge gash on his chest and face.” Marina looked terrified. “Does he know about your abilities?” I nodded. “He gave me a gun.” Marina’s eyes widened. “Really? Can I see it?” I smiled. “Maybe later.” We continued to eat. Afterwards, Marina helped me clean the table. We were in the kitchen when Primo strolled in carrying a tray with an empty plate in it.

“I thought I told you to call me when you’re done so you won’t have to come down here.” He didn’t speak. He put the tray on the counter and took out one of his whiskey glasses. “What time will Niccolo arrive?” He went to the pantry and came back with a bottle of whiskey in his hand. “Maybe 6 or 7.” I nodded and he left the kitchen. “Is he always like that?” I shook my head. I continued to put the dishes in the dishwasher and when I was done, Marina and I went to the living room.

“Primo can surely hide his emotions really well. Just a while ago he was kissing you inside his office and now he won’t talk to you because I’m here.” I jerked my head to her direction. “What did you say?” She quickly looked at the floor and didn’t speak. “You were spying on us?” She shrugged. “This is why I want us to refrain from anything sexual while you’re here. You’re just a little perv.” She looked at me. “No, I’m not.” I shook my head and pinched her cheek. “Ow Luna.” I pinched a little harder. “Will you spy on us again?” She shook her head. “I won’t. I promise.” I let her cheek go and she held it.

We spent the afternoon watching our favorite shows and talking. Marina and I were laughing at a joke she told when the clock chimed 6 pm. “You should prepare for the dinner. Wear something nice.” She looked at me suspiciously but she didn’t say anything. I went upstairs to change. I was in the closet half-naked when Primo walked in the bedroom. “Luna?” I was about to put on my dress when I heard him. “In the closet.” He opened the closet door and when he saw me he smiled.

“Don’t even think about it.” He chuckled and helped me into my dress. “Thank you. But you’re not off the hook yet.” He looked confused but I didn’t say anything. I picked out his outfit and I hung it in front of him. “Please get dressed while I go downstairs to check on Marina.” He nodded and I gave him a quick kiss. I went to Marina’s room and I knocked first before I went in. She was in front of the mirror doing her make-up. She looked stunning in a navy blue dress that barely covered her knees.

“You look beautiful.” She looked at me and smiled. I’m sensing something odd with Marina but I’m not sure what it is. After she did her make-up, we went downstairs together. Primo was already in the living room waiting for Niccolo. Marina sat on the sofa and I stood next to Primo. A few minutes later, the doorbell rang. Primo and I went to the door to open it and greet our guest. When we opened the door, we were greeted by Niccolo’s famous heart melting smile. “Good evening Niccolo. Please come in.” He walked inside and Primo closed the door. “You look wonderful tonight, Luna.”  Thanked him and we went on our way to the dining room where everything was set.

Marina was right behind us. She was trying so hard to ignore Niccolo’s presence. We took our seat. Primo and I sat across from each other. Niccolo was next to Primo and Marina was next to me. Isla served the appetizers and we had a chat. “Niccolo how was your day?” Niccolo took a sip of his wine before he answered. “It’s been very tiring. I had to visit 5 different restaurants today.” I wasn’t listening because my attention was with Marina who was looking down on her food. A little while later, Isla served the entrée.

“Marina, you look beautiful tonight. How are you?” I looked at Marina and she looked up at Niccolo and smiled. “Thank you. I’m fine.” Niccolo seemed unaffected by their last meet-up whilst Marina seemed very affected. Dessert was served but Marina was still picking at her food. It seemed she didn’t eat a single bite. After dinner, Primo and Niccolo engaged in a conversation in the living room. Marina and I went to the balcony upstairs. We grabbed our jackets first before we headed outside. When we were on the balcony, I closed the door behind us.

“What's wrong with you?” I asked. She didn’t look at me. Her eyes were fixed on the night sky. “Marina…” I was beside her and I put my arm around her shoulder. “I don’t know what’s wrong, Luna.” I sighed. “I think I know what’s happening.” She looked at me confused. “You like him don’t you?” She immediately shook her head. “No, no, no. That’s not it. I’m just tired from the long trip.” She was denying it. I held her hand to calm her down. “Tell me the truth. I won’t get mad.” She sighed and hugged me.

“I know it’s wrong but I couldn’t help it. I know he doesn’t care about me. He has other girls in mind. I don’t know what got into me Luna.” She let me go and I cupped her face. “I want to be happy for you and I am but not with him.” She nodded. “I want him to look at me the way Primo looks at you.” I raised my eyebrow. “How does Primo look at me?” She rolled her eyes. “Don’t tell me you don’t notice? The way he looks at you, it makes me think that love really does exist in the mafia and not just love for the mob. True love.” I shook my head.

“I don’t want to fill your head with lies.” She looked at the sky. “Papa is planning to marry me off to Domenico.” My eyes widened. “What?” She held my hand. “Domenico is a nice guy.” I was shocked. I don’t have any problem with Domenico but I didn’t want her to marry him. She’s still too young. “I won’t let this happen. I’ll do something about it.” She shook her head. “What else can you do? It’s fine Luna. I’ll be fine.” I sighed. We went back inside when it got too cold. I hung the jackets on a rack next to the balcony doors. We went back downstairs where Primo and Niccolo were.

“What would you ladies like to do now?”I took a seat next to Primo and Marina took a seat next to me. “Would you like to watch a movie?” I asked them and they all nodded. I put on a random movie. “Tomorrow, I would like to give Marina a tour of New York. Would you two like to join us?” Niccolo looked at Primo and he nodded which made me happy. I looked at Marina and she was looking at the TV. I smiled at Niccolo, although it felt like an excuse to say sorry for Marina’s behavior tonight.

Niccolo went home at 10 pm. Marina said goodnight and she went straight to her room. Primo and I took a shower together even though I told him not to but he was persistent so we ended up taking a shower together. I changed into my nightgown and I went to bed. Primo followed and he wrapped his arms around me. “What’s wrong with Marina?” I sighed. “My father wants her to marry Domenico.” Primo was silent for a while.

“You still owe me an honest answer.” He looked at me confused. “What’re you talking about?” I pinched his nose. “Why didn’t you tell me that Niccolo and Marina shared a kiss during our wedding?” He smiled. “It wasn’t my business.” I cupped his face. “You are one unbelievable man.” He chuckled and gave me a quick kiss. “I’m tired. Let’s sleep. Goodnight la mia metà.” I snuggled up to him. “Goodnight mia principe.”

When I woke up, the sun wasn’t out yet. Primo was still fast asleep. I decided to make them breakfast. I slowly took Primo’s arm away from my body but he resisted. His eyes were still closed but I could tell he was awake. “I’m going to make breakfast.” I whispered. He groaned and let me go. “You should go back to sleep.” I placed a kiss on his cheek and I pulled the blanket over him. I walked out the door and I closed it very gently. I went to Marina’s room and when I opened it she was still asleep. I went downstairs to the kitchen.

“Good morning Luna. Do you want me to make you coffee?” Isla greeted me warmly. “Yes, please.” I walked over to the pantry to grab some ingredients. Isla handed me the cup. “Thank you Isla.” Isla smiled at me and went to the living room to clean. I wanted to make pancakes along with bacon and eggs. I looked at the clock on the kitchen wall and it was almost 5:30 am. I made the pancake batter and I prepared the frying pan.

I decided to make separate pancake batters. I put blueberries in the first and strawberries in the second. I wasn’t sure what Primo would prefer but Marina loves strawberries. I prepared the table and when I was almost done, Marina came to the kitchen. “Good morning Marina. Hope you slept well.” She stretched her arms out and rubbed her eyes. “Good morning Luna.” I told her to take a seat on the dining table because I was about to serve the food. She nodded and went to the dining room.

“Good morning beautiful.” As I was pouring the last bit of batter on the pan, a pair of muscular arms grabbed me by the waist. He saw what I was cooking. “Blueberry pancakes? How did you know?” Oh, so he likes blueberries. “I didn’t. I just love blueberries.” He smiled and gave me a kiss before he let me go. I flipped the pancake over. “What time will we leave later?” I took the pancake out of the pan and placed it on the plate. “Is 9 okay?” He nodded and took the plate from my hands. I pouted. He chuckled and stole a quick kiss. We walked into the dining room where Marina was waiting for us.

“Wait, I forgot something.” I went back to the kitchen to grab Marina’s milk. She doesn’t drink coffee so I made her favorite. Milk with cinnamon. I took a tall glass and I poured the milk in it. I returned to the dining room and I placed the glass in front of her. Her eyes widened. “I miss having this every day.” I raised my eyebrow. “What do you mean? I taught you how to make it.” She shrugged. “Yeah, but it’s not as good as when you make it.” I giggled. I took my seat next to Primo and we ate breakfast.

“So Primo, would you be interested in having children?” I almost choked on the piece of pancake that I was chewing. I grabbed my coffee mug and took a big gulp. They both looked at me with amused expressions. “Yes, I am. But not right now.” I sighed. I gave Marina a dirty look and she just smiled at me. “What about you Marina? Do you have any interest in kids?” I looked at Primo and I could tell he was hiding something from me. Marina looked confused. “Me? I don’t know.” She took a piece of pancake and put it in her mouth.

“Okay, enough about kids. Where do you want to go first Marina?” She took a sip of her milk before she answered. “I heard good things about the Museum of Natural History. I want to go there first.” I looked at Primo for signs of approval and he nodded. After breakfast, we prepared for our little adventure. Niccolo arrived earlier than expected. I dressed in a black turtleneck sweater, a pair of pants and my boots. I knocked on Marina’s door and she opened it. She was already set.

“Let’s go.” She nodded and took her purse. We went downstairs where the men were waiting. When Niccolo saw Marina his expression changed. He suddenly became happier. I was having my own thoughts about these two which made me worry. “Are we all set?” Marina and I nodded. I walked beside Marina and we went outside. We’re taking Primo’s car for today. Marina and I sat on the back seat while Primo and Niccolo were in front. Primo started the car and we were off.

“We’re here.” The trip didn’t take too long. Niccolo opened the car door to let us out. Marina was first but she seemed to ignore Niccolo. I thanked him once I got out. We bought our tickets and we went inside. We were walking on the first floor when Marina excused herself for a phone call. I became suspicious so I followed her. She hid behind an exhibit and then she answered the call.

“Hello? Yes, Father already told me. I’m still in New York. I’ll be back home in a few days. Goodbye.” She ended the call and sighed. When she turned around she was surprised to see me. “Luna…” I looked at her intently. She looked down and I grabbed her phone. “Antonio?” She nodded. Domenico’s father is making sure Marina isn’t going to run away from the wedding. “What is he thinking? You’re not even old enough to marry. I’m going to find a way out of this. In the meantime, just enjoy your stay here.”I gave her back her phone and she hugged me.

“Where have you been?” Primo asked. I gave him a ‘we’ll talk about this later’ look. He seemed to understand and we continued with our tour. We went to the Planetarium and I think I enjoyed it the most. It was almost lunch time when we finished our tour. Primo drove us to a nearby restaurant and we ate lunch. “How did you like the museum Marina?” Marina didn’t answer so I gave her a nudge. “Uh, it was nice.” Niccolo didn’t ask any more questions.

“Would you like to go to the Central Park Zoo?” Primo asked Marina. She looked at him and nodded. “Sure.” She was still worried about her stupid wedding. I suddenly had the idea to make her get out of that funk. “Primo, do you know a place where we can pilot our own plane?” Niccolo looked at me and when Marina heard me she suddenly sprung to life. “No, no, no, no, no. Luna, don’t do it.” I ignored her.

“We have a private airport that we use for emergencies.” Niccolo looked at Primo. “Can we use it just for today?” Primo nodded. Marina covered her face. “I’m not leaving this car.” I looked at her. “Stop being so sulky. I’m trying to make you enjoy your stay here.” She didn’t look at me. She crossed her arms and looked outside the window. “So Luna, do you know how to fly a plane?” Niccolo asked. I shook my head.

“Marina’s the pilot.” He looked at Marina and she was still looking outside. “I don’t know how to fly a plane anymore. It died along with my father.” I sighed. “Could you lighten up? I told you I’d ask Father to stop the stupid wedding.” Primo and Niccolo looked away. Marina grumbled. “Fine. I’ll fly a stupid plane.” I felt relieved. Primo drove us to their private airport. Marina and I got out and we let Primo talk to one of the people who worked here to let us borrow a plane.

Primo led us to a small airplane. Niccolo offered his hand to let Marina in but she ignored it. Primo held my hand and we entered the plane together. Marina didn’t even ask for assistance. She went straight to the cockpit and when everything was clear, she took us off the ground. Niccolo looked impressed. He went to the cockpit to talk to Marina while Primo and I were left in one of the seats at the back.

“Primo, does Niccolo know about the wedding?” He nodded. “He’s upset.” I looked at him. “Can we do anything about it?” He thought about it for a while before he turned to me. “I can talk to my father to marry Marina to Niccolo.” I thought about it. She likes him and I bet he likes her too. “Will you be able to convince your father?” He nodded. I held his hand and I rested my head on his shoulder. Niccolo came back looking pissed.

“What’s wrong with you?”Primo asked. Niccolo took a seat in front of us. “Nothing.” Primo and I looked at each other. Marina announced that she’ll be landing the plane so we put on our seatbelt. After she landed the plane, I went to her side. “Did you feel a little better?” She looked at me and her face softened. “It actually helped me relieve my stress. Thanks Luna.” I hugged her and we went back to the car. We went in and Primo started the engine.

“Any more places you want to visit?” I looked at Marina but she was busy looking outside. “What about you Luna? Do you have any secret talents you want to show us?” Niccolo asked with a goofy grin on his face. I was about to say no when Marina butted in. “Do we still have time for one more destination?” Primo looked at his watch and nodded. Marina looked at me menacingly. I hope she’s not going to say what I think she’s going to say.

“Do you know a place where we can drag race?” My eyes widened. “Oh no, this is where I draw the line. Let’s just go back home.” Marina squinted her eyes. “What do you think, Primo?” Primo and Niccolo looked at each other and smiled. “I know a place.” Primo answered. I couldn’t believe my ears. “No Primo, we’re going home.” Marina pulled me back. “Oh c’mon, you wanted me to fly a plane. This is all I’m asking from you. One race.” I covered my face.

“I don’t know how.” I simply answered. Marina scoffed. “Bullshit.” Niccolo seemed amused by our conversation. “Okay, you want me to race? I’ll make you a deal. You against me. If I win, you tell me the truth.” Marina knew what I meant. “And If I win, you have to do it.” I knew what she meant. I don’t know how this happened but there’s no turning back. “You’re on.” I crossed my arm and I looked at Primo. He just smiled at me. Niccolo is very interested in our deal.
