“Round them up, put them in the cellar”. The soldiers moved immediately, pushing the group of prisoners into the wooden cellar.

Renato watched them from a distance, his hands gripping the reins of his black horse tightly. His face was so stoic, one would think he was about to murder someone.

The old man he had arrested earlier was the last to be thrown in. He was covered in blood from head to toe and his breathing was very shallow. Renato tried not to think of the moment of his arrest and also the look of horror on the little girl’s face who was with him. But as much as he tried to pretend, his facade broke immediately the old man looked him in the eye. Renato briefly thought of looking away but then chose not to because of his position. He was a centurion, why would he be scared of an old man?

The man in question lifted his pale lips in a small smile before he was dragged into the cellar.
