4. Rogue

Myra

My legs buckled as I felt a sharp pain lance through my body. ‘The bond….it’s breaking,’ Akira said feebly. I knew my pack saw me as a  burden, but to this extent? I didn’t know. That they would abandon me to die, I couldn’t fathom. In the 17 years of my life, I have never heard anything so cruel.

I suspected that this might be due to the problem in negotiations with the blood-suckers. I clenched my fists as tears rolled down my cheeks. I wanted to blame them for everything, for killing my parents and now making me a rogue. But at the back of my mind, I knew it wasn’t their fault. It was my pack who are too hard-hearted to even care for one of their own.

The silence in the vacant room was taunting. How come I slept through all this? I couldn’t help but wonder. Then I realised that Jeanette had given me a piece of steak, and I was too happy to question her action or her expression. She had looked sad and had almost hesitated to give me the plate filled with the delicacies. Something must have been mixed in the food. So it wasn’t like they had forgotten me, but had deliberately abandoned me.

I swallowed the thick lump that had formed in my throat. My ears were ringing as I climbed up the stairs. I needed to leave, otherwise, those vampires would definitely come back and then I would be nothing but dead meat. My fingers trembled as I stuffed my stuff in a small frayed duffle bag. My vision blurred from time to time and a dull headache had set in. I didn’t know where I would go, but I needed to leave. I sniffled as I glanced at the room that had been my safe haven for so long.

I took in a shaky breath before exiting from the back door, just in case someone was in the front of our...the packhouse. ‘What now, Aki?’ I asked my wolf helplessly, as the distance between me and the deserted packhouse widened. ‘Scour the forest,’ she replied after some time. I hummed feebly and started my journey. At least in my wolf form, I can catch prey. These woods were common ground, but in a week or two, they’ll know that a rogue is roaring in the forests, then what?

The silence of the woods, occasionally broken by the sudden crunching of dried leaves and hoots of birds, startled me. Despite being a werewolf, I was easily scared by sudden noises. I exhaled a shallow breath as I looked for a place that would serve as my temporary housing.

“Sir, they have evacuated the house. No one is there,” Aaron reported, sounding angry. I nodded. “Good, take some men and clean up the place,” I replied without taking my eyes off the document I was going through. I didn’t want to show my relief. I simultaneously felt annoyed as well. Why should I care for what happened to that mutt?

“But..” Aaron began. I glanced up, waiting for him to continue.

“There was a lingering scent, the scent was fresh. So I think that some of them might be still around,” he said thoughtfully. I raised an eyebrow. “What do you mean?”

Aaron replied, “It was an omega scent, I am sure of that. Now that I think of it…” He took a seat on the nearby couch, eyebrows furrowed in concentration. “I think there was only that scent.” I clenched my jaw, stopping myself from trying to show any curiosity. Did she not escape?

“Did you scour the forest?” I asked, hoping that I hadn’t given away anything. Aaron cocked his head. “No? Should I ask the…”

“No need. I will look into it,” I interrupted, standing up. “You? No offence but you don’t need to take the trouble to find an omega,” he said in disbelief. I did not say anything because I wasn’t obligated to explain my actions to my subordinate.

Dusk painted the sky orange and red. I stepped into the woods, and her scent immediately overwhelmed my senses. Did she not leave with her pack? I followed her scent trail, walking stealthily. Soon I spotted her or rather her wolf, sitting under one of the broader trees and licking her paws. From a distance, I kept looking at her from where I stood, a safe distance away.

Her wolf was small, almost like a dog but a little bigger than a regular one. Her grey fur was splattered with mud and twigs as if she had wrestled on the ground with something. My eyes honed on her left paw and it was then I realized that she was licking a wound. I frowned.

Was she an idiot? Did she not catch up with her pack? I couldn’t help but think again. My absent-mindedness must have given away my presence because her head snapped up, her ears pricked and her eyes turned alert. “It’s me,” I said, not wanting her to stand up and attack with whatever energy she had left. Her gaze finally settled on me. Her eyes Her gaze remained alert, but the sharpness in them dimmed slightly. Then she proceeded to continue her task at hand without even bothering to spare another glance at me.

I was glad that I wasn’t in my human form. Otherwise, I would have hurled insults at him. Why must he appear when I am at my weakest? Akira was the more tolerant one between the two of us. She never questioned my decision, and I never questioned hers. While I knew she was a little dismayed by my decision to reject our mate, she didn’t become angry at my decision.

I had received this injury while hunting for a rabbit. I am not used to hunting and today I learned how hard it is to survive. Being an omega, I am not strong enough. I continued licking my wound when I sensed him approaching closer. I stiffened.

“So you were an idiot enough to not go with the pack?” he taunted. I raised my head and glared at him. Why did he care? No, he didn’t. He had just come here to taunt me. I limped towards the back of the tree, the broad bark providing enough privacy for me to change. I had put my backpack in a hollowed part of this tree.

“Why are you here?” I asked when as I stepped from behind the tree. My leg was still healing, but I forced myself to stay standing. He crossed his arms, a smirk locking on his lips. “My subordinate informed me that a wolf was still here, so I came here to check which stupid dog was still lingering in the woods.”

I pursed my lips but did not answer him. His smirk riled me up. “I will leave in a few days. Don’t worry. I am just going to figure out…”

“Why didn’t you leave?” he interrupted me. I glowered at him. His smirk had slipped off his face, his gaze was keen and piercing. I averted my gaze and let the silence speak for me.

I inhaled sharply as the realisation dawned upon me. Did she...by chance…? I always thought that wolves were more protective of their own. To think they could be cold and cruel like some of us amazed me. “They left you, didn’t they?” The words came out in a rush, a soft murmur but the way she flinched made it clear that she had heard me. The flinch also cleared my doubt and made something roil in my dead, unbeating heart.

She still didn’t reply, just steadfastly avoided my gaze. So much for thinking that she had run away with her pack. I let out a sigh, a hollow imitation of those who breathed.

“So what now? Going to survive with those poor hunting skills and then what...die?” I couldn’t help but let a slight sarcasm leak into my tone, earning a scowl from her.

“That is none of your business. We are not mates anymore remember? So my living or dying doesn’t concern you or your...life,” she snapped. I chuckled before my gaze landed on her injured leg. She was preferring the right to the left. My smile turned into a frown again.

“I can help youー”

“Don’t. I don’t fucking need your help!” she shouted. I could see the sheen of unshed tears cradled in her eyes. She was distressed. Why was she so obtuse?

“Well, die in the wilderness then. An omega like you will never stand a chance to survive. Either you will be killed by the dogs or get killed by some of us,” I spat. It was useless to make her see the logic. Why was she hellbent on hating me? I know our kinds don’t gel well. But I have seen a vampire-werewolf pairing before. It’s not forbidden, but rare.

She shot me a pointed look as if she would rather be killed by someone than take my advice. I turned back on my heels, not bothering to look back and hoping that this would be the last time I crossed paths with that girl.
