Chapter 6 - Guilt

Due to heavy blood loss, just a moment ago the girl was still in critical condition in the operating room. However, a bag of blood given by Jack can help her. Several hours had passed with so much struggle. The doctor and several other surgeons have now finished their work on the operating table. They have all done and given their best for the patient. However, Jack did not know what had happened in the operating room. Until suddenly several officers wearing uniforms came to him and immediately took him to the police station.

Jack left the hospital with handcuffs wrapped around his hands. He felt really unwilling when his feet stepped away from there. It's not that he wants to avoid all charges, but Jack still finds it hard to leave a victim which is not known for sure. However, he did not want to make matters worse, and went with the officers.

At the police station.

When Jack arrived at the police station, he was asked many things by an officer there. Jack sat down and was immediately interrogated with several questions regarding the accident incident. Not even once the man with the scar on his face deny the question he was asked. He was well aware that it was because of him that all this chaos happened.

"We will write all of your statements here, so we hope you will describe all the events in detail." An officer intends to write a report about the accident that caused by jack, "And remember, you must speak the truth. Because we have received CCTV from the scene." The officer's tone sounded threatening to Jack. However, Jack didn't seem the least bit afraid of the officer's bluff. Because in fact he must be held accountable for all his actions.

"Okay, Sir. I understand." Jack nodded slowly, his mind still on the hospital, the place where the girl was still being treated by doctors.

"Good, very responsible. I like that attitude, full of inspiration. Then let's get started now. What's your name?" The clerk started asking Jack.

"Jack Macario," Jack replied.

"Residence?" The clerk asked Jack again.

"I gave you an ID, Sir. You can see it there!" Jack complained to the clerk. Because Jack felt that the question from the officer in front of him was not important.

"I know, I just wanted to ask you, Sir! Do you mind?" asked the officer, while frowning his forehead.

"No, Sir. Sorry, please continue." Jack could do nothing more about the officer. It was just that the officer's eyes gave him a strange look, and Jack felt a little uncomfortable.

"Good if you understand. Okay, can we start again?" The officer occasionally scratched his head which didn't really itch, "Where did we talk about?" The officer went back to surveying every inch of Jack's body.

"Please, Sir. Earlier you asked where I live." Jack said quietly.

"Oh, yes. Are you from this town?" asked the officer trying to open the conversation again.

"No, Sir." Jack also answered a question that was thrown from the officer.

"Sorry in advance. I wanted to ask, but maybe this is a personal thing. I hope you don't mind and take offense at this question. I'm just a little curious. Where did you get the wound?" The officer pointed at Jack's face. Even if it was only for a moment that Jack understood the meaning of the officer's question to him.

"This wound? Oh, this I got when I was a teenager, Sir." Jack said honestly, he then rubbed the wound that had made an impression on his face.

"Are you an illegal immigrant?" asked the officer probingly. Several times the officer turned over Jack's identification card.

"Of course not, Sir!" Answered Jack bluntly.

"Let's go straight to the original question." The officer glanced at Jack for a moment, "So you were driving drunk, Sir?" The clerk waited for Jack's answer, his hands resting on the lit computer keyboard.

"Yes, Sir. I'm sorry," Jack felt very guilty.

"Do you know who that girl is, Sir?" Suddenly the officer grabbed his chin with both hands.

"No, Sir." Jack sat across from the clerk's desk anxiously.

"You better pray and hope that the girl you hit is safe." The officer grabbed a cigarette from inside the pack, then he snuffed the tip of the cigarette using a lighter. Several times the officer lit the fire using a lighter that looked a little rusty and old. Then after a while the officer continued his delayed speech again, "I'll tell you a little secret, Sir. The girl you hit with your car is the daughter of one of the most respected families in this town!"

Then a small fire came out of the lighter which was being pressed by the officer, although it swayed a little because of the slight wind. However, the tip of the cigarette burned perfectly. Immediately the cigarette smoke came out and billowed into the air when the officer inhaled it. The white lump slowly disappeared as the officer waved his hand vigorously.

"Come on, let's continue. Where were we?" the clerk asked Jack.

Jack looked at the cigarette on the officer's middle and index fingers. He also remembered his late wife-Lilyana, his wife would be very fussy if Jack caught smoking. Jack cracked a smile for a moment, a sudden bitterness welling up in his heart. All the words of the officer who was still smoking a cigarette, made Jack feel even more guilty. Because actually deep in his heart, Jack felt very sad about this. His negligence had hurt someone, and until now he did not know what happened to the girl.

Question after question the clerk had given Jack, and answered them without flinching. Now, the officer couldn't help but hold Jack in a barred restroom, "Forgive us, Sir. We will hold you here for the time being." The officer then left Jack in the detention room after locking the door.

"Until when? I have to go to the hospital to see it!" asked Jack as he gripped the iron bars that were now in the way.

"For now, we don't know. Maybe until this thing is over. You just pray that the girl is safe." The officer walked away after saying to Jack.

Jack's body and heart shook violently every time he remembered the face of the seriously injured girl. Jack could no longer hold back all the feelings that were suffocating his soul and heart. The man was sinking deeper and deeper into the lingering guilt. It was as if he was drowning alone at the bottom of the deepest ocean.
