Chapter Four

Wolferan sighed looking at a map of the territory. He had lost track of the silver-eyed demon a day ago and was trying to figure out where she was going. He had been following her through the forest but hadn’t caught up to her or had any sign of her after finding that camp. He knew it had been the camp of the silver-eyes demon because of all the body’s she left behind. He knew her killing style by now and knew it was her who killed them. The thing that mystified him was the fact she had a child with her. He knew this by the fact that there were child sized shoe prints.

Wolferan was confused by this as he had never once seen her travel with anyone. He was wondering if she had kidnapped him but no one from Rynion was reporting a missing child. Wolferan sighed, mulling this matter over in his mind. It never once crossed his mind that the child’s parents could have asked the silver-eyed demon to take the child. He only thought that she had taken the child by force or bribed the parents or threatened them or even worse she had killed the parents and taken the child. But why? He just couldn’t figure it out.

Wolferan sighed before rolling his map up and put it away. He could only see three places she was going; either the forest to hide, the town Rotton past the forest or the town of Vession to the south. But both towns were very far away on foot. It never once crossed his mind that she would go to the forbidden forest. It was just too dangerous to go there for ordinary people. He didn’t think much of the silver-eyed demon but he had a respect for her since she had managed to escape him for so many years.

Wolferan has gone to the forbidden forest once or twice before only going to find the great grandmaster who is rumored to live there but he had found nothing but an empty shack that had been abandoned. He had assumed the grandmaster had either died or found a better place to make his home. Although he truly figured the grandmaster was long dead. Wolferan had lived a very long time and by now assumed it was rumored he was an immortal but that was false. He was no immortal, he just had the lifespan of a true dragon unlike so many of his brethren, the dracions. Some lived a few hundred years but none as long as the original dragons of the world.

Wolferan on the other hand had met several of the original dragons and learned from them almost a thousand years ago. He had their lifespan as he had learned and would live for a million years if he wasn’t killed. Because of this information he learned to fight and became the strongest person in the world but he kept this a secret from others. He had great authority in the world and could very easily destroy any kingdom if he wanted but he wasn’t that kind of person. In the shadows he controlled the world but on the surface he was nothing but a bounty hunter.

Wolferan enjoyed doing this though as he liked to hunt down those who were evil and punish them himself. He had no need for mortal things but had a soft spot for children and the weak who couldn’t defend themselves. Because of this he became a bounty hunter in the light of day while in the dark he ruled the world.

This was also the reason why he was able to hunt down anyone he pleased when he had the chance. It was also the reason he got information of where his target was so fast. But the silver-eyed demon had evaded him for years and by now it had become an obsession of his to catch this woman.

Wolferan could know all there was to know about everyone in the world if he wanted but this silver-eyed demon.. he didn’t even know her name. This infuriated him beyond any means. He knew what she looked like and her styles but she could outsmart him and escape. Not only had she escaped him one or twice but too many times to count. His patience was running thin. He wanted to know who she was and soon. If he didn't, those of his informants would be punished. Wolferan could be very vindictive when he didn’t get what he wanted after his patience ran out.

He absolutely had to know who this woman, this cattrina was; he just had to know. It was bothering him to no end. This silver-eyed demon had outsmarted him many times and was very fast. He could tell she was skilled but he was unsure how skilled. He did know that every bounty hunter except him had died at her hands but with him she always ran. He didn’t know why though. He thought it could be the fact she knew who he really was or had a sense of danger or believed the rumors of him being immortal either way it was not good for him.

If she knew who he was, she could only run or turn herself in but he didn’t believe this. If she believed the rumor then she was an idiot but he knew that not to be true as he could tell she was too smart to fall for rumors. He only had the one option that she had a sense of danger but if that were true..

She had to be an elite warrior with years of battle experience but he knew the silver-eyed demon was no more than twenty at the moment. No one he had ever met had ever gained a sense of danger under twenty unless they were born with the sense and trained it. Even then though, it was hard fought for and needed at least ten battles on a battlefield to use it effectively and successfully at all times.

Wolferan had seen the silver-eyed demon avoid him many times without her ever seeing him more than a hundred times. He knew she had killed many but that wouldn’t give her a sense of danger. He couldn’t explain her actions any other way though. Of course there was another way to get a sense of danger and that was to be a master of martial arts. Although, he hadn’t seen a master of the martial arts since the Haune family was destroyed and the martial arts erased from history.

He was the only person now alive that knew the martial arts or knew anything of them so he immediately erased that thought from his mind. But this thought kept nagging at him. If the silver-eyes demon truly was a martial artist and had a sense of danger even he would have trouble defeating her. But again he was the only one who knew of the martial arts so he couldn’t believe she knew any. There was the fighting style but it was far weaker than the martial arts.

Wolferan sighed and rubbed his forehead, shaking his head of these thoughts. He needed to find the silver-eyed demon and soon. He needed to save that child with her before she decided to kill him. He had a low view of the silver-eyed demon. He thought of her as nothing more than a rabid wolf. When he first started hunting her, she had been an ant in his eyes but as the years passed his view of her changed but he still thought of her as no match for him.

Wolferan broke his small camp and took to the sky to look for signs of the silver-eyed demon. He had followed her to an area near the forbidden forest but then lost any trace of her and the child. He wouldn't have lost them if it hadn't stormed for several days. He was worried for the health of the child because of this weather and tried all of his tricks to pick up their trail but to no luck. He knew the silver-eyed demon was more skillful than anyone he currently knew. As such it would not be easy to track her down.

He looks for any trace of the silver-eyed demon heading towards the town of Rotton hoping this was where she was headed and would catch her. If Wolferan caught her he could finally put to bed his obsession of catching her and find out who she really was. He flew swiftly using one of his magic abilities to search for signs but when he was halfway to the town and still no sign he knew this wasn’t where she was headed. He stopped and sighed he had to turn back and try again and hope he caught up to her. If not he could only go home and wait for any news of the silver-eyes demon.

Wolferan sighed before he headed back to where he lost them. He couldn’t understand the thoughts of the silver-eyed demon. Could she be resorting to blackmail or ransom because she had no money but if that were the case couldn’t she find a killing job like normal? He just couldn’t figure it out. He sighed, flying swiftly back. It had taken him half a day to get half away to Rotton. He could cover a week's worth of riding in a few hours while he knew the silver-eyed demon was on foot and with a child. He still couldn’t figure out how she could always escape him but he was determined to catch her.

He reached the place he lost them and landed; it was getting dark and he knew he couldn’t carry on in the dark. Wolferan made a small camp and built a fire before laying down on his blankets to sleep. He had no worry of anyone or anything attacking him. He was just too dangerous for any animal to try. He yawned softly before starting to doze thinking. He soon fell asleep on the blankets.

Wolferan woke the next morning and sat up. He got up and made a quick breakfast of some jerky and a roll. Wolferan finished his breakfast before he broke his camp and flew headed for Vession. He once again flew swiftly while using his magic ability to search for signs of the silver-eyed demon and the child. He was hoping to find them today but if he couldn’t he knew he had no chance to find them til they surfaced once again and by then the child might have been killed.

He flew swiftly searching but by midday he still had no sign of them and roared in anger knowing he had lost them for good. He now could only go home and hope for news and the best for that child. Wolferan of course didn’t want to give up so easily but knew he couldn’t continue a futile effort. He had more than once tracked her into a forest and everytime he lost all trace of her and could only wait for the silver-eyed demon to show up again.

Wolferan calmed himself and looked around the forest thinking. He wanted to stay and search but he knew it was pointless. He just really wanted to save that child from the clutches of the silver-eyed demon but knew he couldn’t. He just hoped she would be merciful and let him live and if not he hoped she would kill the child painlessly. He could only hope for the best at this moment. He sighed before leaving flying home now that he had no hope of finding them. He felt this was his greatest failure. He had failed to save the child from harm.
