Life Or Death

The road again hid in that old deafening silence, and nothing could be heard, except the sound of some fumes of fire burning themselves to avoid the encounter of that insufferable sight.

Five minutes have passed since they both lost their consciousness. The patrolling cars must be coming any minute.

At last, the cars reached there, and now they are being taken to a hospital, which may be the nearest to that road. One of the police decided to accompany these injured bodies in the ambulance and the patrol cars followed.

The faces were so covered in wounds that identification was not possible. The policeman sitting inside the ambulance delved their belongings and found identification cards of both.

Seeing those faces on that identification card suddenly made his mind stop processing. The words return next to the photos which people usually consider to be names of the ID card’s owner was not so usual at that moment. After seeing those identities, he knew whom he needed to contact.

Till the time they reached the hospital, the necessary persons were informed about the condition of those wounded bodies. And as expected, it did not take long for those contacted persons to reach the hospital. At the time that ambulance stopped on the entry of the hospital, they both were put on stretchers.

Since the identities already shocked the policeman, ward boys were still normal citizens. They all rushed as soon as possible to shift those filled stretchers to the emergency ward. But before those stretchers could reach the emergency ward, two unknown persons held the edge of it, shouting on those nurses to hurry up and take those stretchers inside, asking the assigned doctors to start the operation as soon as possible.

The yell those two contacted persons made was loud enough to send shivers in the spine of every single head having the capability to hear, present in that floor and made it clear that the bodies lying on the stretchers were not of any usual person, and meant a lot to the owners of those screaming mouths.

The injured bodies were now sleeping inside the operation theatre, surrounded by top surgeons and specialists, discussing the operation procedure while wearing their green attire, and nurses preparing the needed equipment and tools.

Outside was complete silence as it was an early hour, striking four in the morning. There was no rush, even if it was an emergency ward. Just two people sitting on the bench outside the operation theatre with their hands engulfed in their palms and the arms resting on the knee caps.

No one could see their face clearly, since it was covered with their hands reflecting a shade of red on various parts, since they had touched those bleeding bodies.

The silence was so deep, but it did not last for a long period. Soon there was a flood of people approaching those two figures sitting all tensed and worried.

The crowd was so desperate that even the guards standing outside that emergency ward could not handle them, and ended up losing control over it, making all the crowd flow inside the emergence ward.

The people were all armed with broadcasting machines. Some holding mikes were labeled with different news channel names, accompanied by various tall figures carrying different kinds of cameras. The two people sitting on their benches now pulled their faces out of their palms after hearing the overlapping sounds of footsteps approaching them.

There was no place they could go to hence, there was no way they could avoid that crowd approaching them. So, they decided to face them all and stood up at once attaining a firm position so that they could prevent getting knocked by that recalcitrant wild crowd.

As soon as the crowd saw these two people standing outside the closed room, illuminating red light on its top, they understood the situation and prepared themselves to ask it all from those persons. They walked ahead, and before they could even properly take their position, all of them bombarding these two mentally wracked people with their sarcasm-wrapped questions.

The crowd was making an unbearable noise with all those inappropriate questions that those two figures standing in front could not handle anymore and finally yelled, “ENOUGH”, one of them said. The scream was so bold, that the crowd which was almost ready to crush these two while getting blinded by the fact of getting their attention, automatically stepped back and went quiet.

“One by one”, ordered the lady, standing next to the man. Yes, the two figures standing outside, were a male and a female. On this command, the whole crowd decided to throw the questions in a disciplined way.

“Sir, why are you sitting outside this operation theatre”, a girl from the crowd decided to ask. “As if you all are unaware of the whole situation. Don’t you dare try to act innocent.”, the lady replied before the man, to whom this question was for.

“Ok, then let us ask what this all is happening for, and how did it happen?”, “Is this all being done on purpose”, “Do you know who is the mastermind behind all this”, “Was it an accident for real”, “are you up to something”, “Will you take revenge from the one behind this all”, the people started their word war again making those already annoyed two minds now fill with anger in it. “Will you all just shut your mouths!”, said the man in anger, “Sir but…”, a voice decided to dare, “YOU TOO PLEASE, BE QUIET”, the man again yelled. “Guards, take them all out of here, RIGHT NOW”, the girl standing in front of the crowd ordered, pointing her men. The guards obeyed that voice without any second thought and started pulling the whole crowd outside the ward.

Within a couple of seconds, the whole floor was again silent, containing just the man and the lady. Even the guards were standing on the stairs leading to the second floor.

After an hour, one of the doctors from the operation theatre came out. Seeing the doctor, both the figures outside rushed towards him. “How are they both doctor?”, the man asked. The doctor himself was struggling inside to find the appropriate words for describing the condition of both the patients lying inside that operation theatre.

“We are trying our level best, but the blood loss is too much”, he finally spoke. “So, what you need? Blood? We will get you that. Give me five minutes”, the girl said, taking out her phone to make a call.

“No, mam wait! That is not the problem. We already have the needed amount of blood with us”, the doctor said while stopping the lady.

“Then what is the problem?”, the man standing in front of the doctor asked. “Sir, the organs have faced a lot of damage. And the wounds are very deep inside them. And we are still busy in taking the embedded pieces out of the body.”, the doctor replied with a worried face.

“So, you need organs, right! Fine. Tell me the name of the organ. I will get it here in minutes”, the girl said again, delving for her phone to make a phone call.

“How many you can get? One, two, three, four, five, how many?” the doctor nearly yelled, making the girl drop her phone in fear.

“What do you mean by that count? How many organs are damaged? TELL ME?” the girl yelled, with glittering eyes. The doctor hung his head down.

“Say it already, how many parts are damaged?”, the boy said, holding on to the collar of the doctor to bring that doctor’s face to his level. The stare he was making with the doctor was no less than a beam, penetrating the soul of that doctor.

The doctor could not help but shutter, “I-if w-we w-e-ent on replacing or—ga--ns a whole new body will be m-a-ade. Almost all the organs are damaged to their worse extent.”, he declared, avoiding any eye contact.

“THEN WHAT THE HELL YOU ALL ARE DOING SINCE AND HOUR?”, the girl shouted, taking long steps towards the doctor, who is already standing on the tip of his toes due to the man’s arm holding him high. “Stop right there mam.”, a voice echoed the empty floor coming from behind. That voice was of another doctor coming outside of the operation theatre.

“Get your hands off him and take it easy”, he said again with a firm voice.

“What do you mean, take it easy? DO YOU EVEN KNOW TO WHOM YOU ARE TALKING AND ABOUT WHOM?”, the man yelled, leaving the collar of the previous doctor, now staring in the eyes of the new doctor.

“Apart from any identity, we are talking about two patients hanging in between the doors of life and death, and I am not at all interested in knowing anything further than this information. Now kindly excuse our doctor. The operation is still going on, and I know you would not want any mistakes to be made, so, kindly excuse us”, he stated while pulling the doctor back from the hands of that man.

While he was walking back to the operation theatre, suddenly a voice asked from behind.

“Are they both going to be ok”, the girl asked, nearly sobbing.

“As our doctor said, we are trying our level best. Anything more than that would be inappropriate to say right now. You need to trust us. Just keep faith in the god and the bodies lying inside. Everything will be all right.”, the doctor assured and went inside the operation theatre, shutting the door again.

The moment the door went close, the girl fell but got rescued by two strong arms of the man, preventing her from striking the ground.

“Do you think they are going to be ok?”, the girl murmured while engulfing herself inside those strong arms holding him.

“Don’t you know them! They both are stronger than us. Trust me, everything is going to be all right. Just stay strong and positive.”, the boy replied while ensuring the girl, or maybe his own self.

With that both went back to their seats, and sat there, holding onto each other, continuously praying for the two souls fighting inside the operation theatre. The light placed above the operation again turned red, and the wait continued.
