Heat

Like Clara had told her, she came to school very early and students hadn’t arrived yet. She followed her energy to the roof. When she got there Clara was on the ledge.

“What are you doing?” Daniella asked making her way towards her.

“Waiting for you” she replied.

Clara turned around and she faced Danny. “Get ready” she said.

“Wait a minute. What are we doing?” she asked.

“Combat training” she replied removing her blazer.

Danny dropped her things. “Alright, but aren’t you going to take-“

Her words died down and she could see everything going back. She gasped when she hit the door. Clara dropped her leg.

“You’re a mind reader, yet you couldn’t see my attack. A human could beat you” she stated.

Danny slid down the door clutching her middle. “I think you broke something” she whispered.

“It’ll heal quickly. You would know, but you don’t” she explained. “Now get up!”

“How about we just focus on my power than combat?” she asked standing up.

“You can’t control it” and she took a fighting stance.

“Oh my stars” she whimpered.

Clara was in front of her and she ducked before her fist made contact with her face. She tired crawling under her spread legs.

Clara grabbed her by her ankle and she was lifted up and thrown towards the ledge and her ribs hit the concrete hard. She coughed hard, but nothing came out.

She looked at the gate and it was that boy she sat down close to yesterday and she smiled.

“Clara there he is!” she said pointing.

“Looks like training is over” Clara said walking towards her and she looked down.

“Him” Clara stated.

“Yeah. Do you know him?” Danny asked with a smile.

“Yeah and you shouldn’t think about it” she said.

“Why?” Danny asked.

“Because one isn’t meant to go close to fire” she replied already bored.

“No wonder his energy is scorching hot” Danny stated excited.

Clara looked at her. “You can read energy” she stated.

“Yeah, can’t you?” she asked.

“I already told you my power Danny. Yours is unique. I haven’t come across anyone with that type of power before” she said standing up straight.

“Really?” she asked surprised. It was the first nice thing Clara had said to her.

“Too bad you just can’t control it” she said with a sly smirk and if she had her tail it would be moving lazily.

‘Spoke too soon’ she thought. “So are we going back to training?” she asked.

“No, we’ll save that for later. If I continue, you might die” she said getting her bag and hanging her blazer on her shoulder. “Let’s go” she said.

Danny got her things and followed her. She was already feeling better.

She followed her down the stairs and back to the floor where they had their first class and the boy was there getting things from his locker.

“Why don’t I go talk to him?” she asked.

“No” Clara replied placing a hand on her shoulder.

“Why?” she asked. “Think of it like combat training. I have to be brave” she said determined.

“You’re way in over your head. Is this the first time you’ve seen a guy?”

“No. It’s the first time I’m seeing a guy like me. Think of it as combat training. I have to be brave and smart and win” she said already walking forward.

Clara leaned against the locker and watched her go. She was going to fail badly.

“Hello” she said opening her locker.

He didn’t say anything.

“I’m Daniella. I’m new here. Nice to meet you” she said turning to him.

He still had his face in his lockers.

“You are?” she asked.

He closed his locker and turned to her. Black met brown and again she was sucked in again. It was so hot. It was just like Clara’s. War, destruction and fire. Much more fire reigning down from the sky and then again Clara crying over a lot of dead bodies and a young boy before her.

She was pushed out again.

She blinked twice so she could focus.

“I am so-“

He raised his hand and she closed her eyes expecting a hit, but it never came.

Danny opened her eyes. Clara was in between her and the boy.

“You hitting girls now Kieran” she said.

“What do you want now?” he grumbled.

‘Kieran’ she thought memorizing the name.

“You were about to hit my friend” she stated.

“No I wasn’t. She was looking at me strange and I was just trying to get her to come back” he explained.

Clara smiled and she turned around pulling Danny away.

‘Epic fail’ Danny thought.

During lunch, Clara wanted to continue with her training.

“Okay, you’re very lucky Kieran didn’t know that you looked through his mind” she began.

“It’d have been alright. I like being close to him” she said dreamily.

Clara ignored her. “You read minds, so you can work on it”.

“Okay” she said pushing her tray forward.

“I need you to concentrate. Pick someone and just look through their mind” she said taking the sandwich from Danny’s tray.

“Who?” she asked.

“Just pick someone!” she snapped.

Danny jumped and looked round. Her big eyes caught sight of the boy who wanted her seat in class. She didn’t need to make eye contact for her to do it though. She knew because she could read her parents mind and also her workers.

She focused on his stupid face.

“His name is Adrien Hunter, he’s eighteen, wants to be an engineer and he’s thinking about me” and she opened her eyes in shock. “He’s thinking about me!” she yelled in a whisper.

“Oh! What is he thinking about?” she asked.

“Nothing” she replied.

Danny shivered a little.

“You can still hear him?” she asked.

“No I just felt a little chilly” she said.

“Okay, it’s enough. After lunch we’re going back there” she said.

“Where?” Danny asked.

“You can read minds, but you are really slow” she said.

“Home world! Why?” she asked.

“Training” she replied.

After school Clara transported them to home world, but not where they were yesterday. More like an arena of some sort.

“When will you teach me that?” she asked.

“I’m not sure I’ll ever teach you” she said putting her hair in a ponytail.

“Why not?” she asked.

“You may transport part of yourself and end up dying” she explained simply.

“Why does everything involve me dying?” she asked.

“Because you are clueless” she stated. “Now we can begin” she said throwing a staff toward her which she caught clumsily.

She watched in awe as a gold staff appeared out of nowhere in Clara’s hands.

“Get ready” and said and she attacked. She swung the staff hard which Danny successfully blocked but the hit was so strong that it had the staff she had vibrating.

“Heads up!” she yelled and she kicked her in her side sending her few feet to the side and she crashed hard. Clara was above her in seconds and her staff made contact with her skin and it was burning.

Danny screamed and held onto the staff and the staff glowed and that had Clara flying to the roof? There wasn’t a roof, just endless sky.

Clara flipped and landed on her feet gently with her heels.

“What did you do?” Clara asked walking towards her.

Danny sat up and the staff went flying from her hands. “I don’t know, I thought it was you” she said getting to her feet.

“That was my energy and you threw it back at me” she explained. “That’s your power!” she said excited.

“What?” she asked confused.

“Idiot” she whispered. “You can read energy and also control it. You held my staff and blasted me with my light.

“I did that?” she asked.

“Yeah” Clara said. “But that isn’t enough. That won’t be able to guarantee your safety. You still need to be able to do combat”. She got into position.

“Get ready” she said.

Danny wasn’t fast enough to get her staff.

After a whole lot of tossing and throwing they were done with training. Danny lay on the crystal floor exhausted.

“You are really lazy” she said.

“Clara can I ask you something?” she asked.

“Sure” she replied.

“You and Kieran have a history, don’t you?” she asked.

Clara turned to her slowly.

“I didn’t look through your mind. I swear!”

She calmed down. “We have a history and not a good kind Danny. Stay away from him”.

“So he’s got the bad boy thing going on” Danny said with a smile.

“I’m serious Danny. Away” she warned.

“Sure” Danny replied sitting up.

“Now get up. We got more work to do”.

Danny groaned but she still got up.

It was still tossing and throwing, but she could still stand for about five seconds, but Clara’s heels were so painful. She had been kicked in the face multiple times, but in a way she was still alive.

Luckily they were done for the day, but Clara didn’t take her home. She took her to explore the place. She rented a ship.

Looking down at home world was so beautiful.

“Would you like to live here some day?” Clara asked.

“Yes. It’s really beautiful” she said her face still against the window.

“What type of money do you use?” Danny asked.

“Just like human money, but a whole lot different” she explained. “We should get you back home.

Clara did take her back home and that was how their day went every day. They would come back to school and she would run laps and she would do a lot of exercises. Her parents didn’t bother to ask where she was and what she was doing.

She was fairly good in combat as Clara would call it. She had learned to use her strength and her speed. She could run and jump with Clara, but not there yet. Clara would take her to the clearing during break and she would meditate. She wanted to work on her transportation.

“You’re staring” Clara pointed out.

“Yeah I know” Danny replied.

“Danny you going after Kieran will bring nothing but drama” she explained. “Do you understand?” she asked.

“Why are you so against it?” she asked.

“No one plays with fire. Human or supernatural. If you want to pursue anything with him just be prepared.

She felt that chill again.

Danny stood up suddenly as if possessed.

Clara looked up at her friend. “Danny” Clara called, but she was already moving.

Clara stood up slowly and followed her back into the building. She was heading to the girls bathroom.

“Danny, what’s wrong?” she asked.

Danny didn’t answer. She wasn’t herself and she could see it, but she still followed. She had to make sure the humans didn’t see her. The principal wouldn’t be happy.

Danny opened the door and walked into the seemingly empty bathroom.

“Danny c’mon. Let’s go” she said.

She saw her friend’s eyes in the mirror and it was pitch black. “Danny, what the-“

A door opened and a girl walked out of a stall.

“You have your girl running around cat?” she asked going to the sink and washing her hands.

“Why would you think that penguin?” Clara asked with a smirk. “You know I only have time for you” she purred.

“Don’t be such a slut. Keep your girlfriend in line” she said.

“What?!” she yelled. “Clara and I-“

“You’re back Danny! Shut up” she warned.

“Everyone thinks she’s your girlfriend because you’re so close” she said.

“You know better than to listen to gossip Steph” she said.

“Yeah. Hanging out with people like her isn’t your style” she said and she put a glove on her right hand.

“Excuse me? People like me?” Danny asked confused.

“You’re an embarrassment” Stephanie said turning to her disgust on her face.

“What?” Danny asked taking a step back shocked.

“That’s what we call people like you. You can’t control your powers and you’ve adopted the human lifestyle like it’s really yours. Embarrassments” she said again her blue eyes sparkling.

She looked to Clara for help, but she didn’t say anything.

“Keep her away from me” and the air around them becoming cooler and she left.

“What were you thinking?” Clara asked.

“I don’t know. I just blacked out all of a sudden” she replied turning the tap on and splashing her face.

“Yes I saw that, but Danny you have to control it. Not every supernatural you meet is going to be nice like me” she explained.

“Sure. Why was she so cold though?”

“Steph is always like that-“

“No” Danny cut her off. “I mean she felt so cold. Not her personality”.

“Oh!” Clara realized. “You’ve finally met the ice princess” she said with both hands together.

“She actually acts like one” Danny sniffed.

“Just leave her alone and you won’t have anything to worry about” Clara said. “Now let’s go” she said already walking out.

The day ended pretty quickly and Clara walked her home like usual.

“No training today?” Danny asked.

“No. I got something to take care of” she replied.

“Then, can I get your number?” Danny asked. “Between the time for school and training we never actually talk and hang out” she said her eyes avoiding Clara’s.

“Sure” Clara replied handing her a sheet of paper. “My address is also there so if you feel like visiting” Clara said with that cat grin of hers.

“Thanks. See you tomorrow bright and early?”

“Bright and early Clara replied” and she was walking away from Danny’s gate.

Her house was far and she had to get there before dark. It’s not like she was scared or something, she just felt off. It was just making her hair stand on end. She could feel eyes on her. No way was she going to lead them to her house. She took a detour through the woods and her hands glowed and her staff was with her.

She turned around standing in the middle of the clearing.

“I know you’re there. Come on out!”

The wind picked up which made the leaves rustle and the forest more ominous. ‘It’s a full moon tonight’ she thought.

That had her staff glowing and she watched as something made its way towards her. She glowed gold and the full forest was covered with her light.

When the light cleared she smiled.

“I have to say you’re pretty smart” a voice said.

Clara could hear her clearly and she could tell where it was coming from. A figure emerged from the trees and approached Clara slowly.

“No one would be able to stop my friends like that” and Clara could see the shadows moving in the trees, leaves and the ground.

Clara grinned. “If you think you can beat me because of the stupid moon, you’re highly mistaken”.
