Chapter three

Emily's POV

As soon as I'm done unpacking my stuff and putting them in the right positions, I go down to the living room to join my brother who is seated on the couch, watching TV.

"Hey" I say as I sit beside him.

"What's up?" He replies, turning his head to look at me for a few seconds before taking his attention back to the Tv.

"What are you watching?" I ask and face the Tv where an action movie is currently playing.

"I have no idea, I just got here and came across this. It's probably one of Tyler's collections" he says, laughing.

"Who's Tyler?" I ask.

"Your new roommate. Remember?" He informs me.

Oh,so his name is Tyler….

"Are you hungry?" Kyle cuts through my thoughts.

"Yeah" I tell him, rubbing my hand in circular motion around my stomach as a way to buttress my point.

"Okay, I ordered pizza, should be here anytime so…" His words are cut short by the sound of the doorbell ringing.

"Should be the pizza guy,I'll get that" He says as he rises to his feet, making his way towards the door.

I sit back and keep my eyes fixed on the Tv as I wait for Kyle to return. It doesn't take long before he comes walking back into the living room with a box of pizza in his hand.

"I've never been so happy to see food" I say as I watch him make his way towards me.

"Here" He says, sitting beside me as he begins to open the box containing pizza.

We don't even bother getting anything to use in eating as Kyle divides the pizza into halves and before we know it, we're left with only a little piece left in the box of pizza and I'm reminded of the time back in our high school days when Kyle and I would do the exact same thing every evening after school, ordering pizza and ice cream while we watch movies together.

Despite the fact that he was only two years older than me, Kyle and I were so close right from our childhood days until he left for college, leaving me all alone in the care of our granny.

Being born into a wealthy family,we had everything we could ever desire. My dad worked twice as hard to support and cater for us ever since my mum left us.

I never really got to know my mum since she died in a car accident when I was only just a baby.

Apparently it was on my birthday. I was clocking two and she went out to get me a cake since there was a big storm outside and the delivery guy refused to take the risk during such a heavy storm. My dad had tried to stop her from going to get it herself but my mum was a very stubborn woman and didn't listen and went out in an attempt to make my day a memorable one but unfortunately she never made it back home.

My birthday was never celebrated after that cause it brought so much pain to my family. Though my dad always tried to make me happy in the best way he possibly could.

Over the years as I grew up,I never skipped a year to visit her in the cemetery. I celebrated my birthday with her every year in the cemetery.

Though I have no memory of her since I could barely speak properly at that age, I knew I looked exactly like her from the stories I've heard and pictures I saw of her. She was a very beautiful woman with a beautiful soul and I looked exactly like her. That explains why my dad always made me the center of his world.

My Dad loved her so much and never entertained the idea of getting married again to remarry despite my granny advising him to on countless occasions.

He once told me that he was reminded of her whenever he looked at me and felt she was still with him cause I was a photocopy of her and truly,by merely looking at her pictures it was very obvious that I took after her. We are like reflections of each other, the only difference being my oval shaped face which I took after my Dad and my skin tone which is a shade darker than hers.

I got most of my physical appearances from my mum and looked nothing like my Dad except for the shape of my face, whereas Kyle on the other hand took most of his looks from my Dad and my mum as well.

Few months after my mum's death,my dad dedicated most of his time to his work and started working extra hard to cater for my brother and I.

He was barely ever home, hence,we were only opportuned to speak with him on phone most times though he never failed in fulfilling his fatherly responsibilities and never hesitated to make whatever little time he spent with us worth it.

We couldn't blame him, however,we knew he was doing all he could to make sure we lived as comfortably as possible and make our mother's absence not hinder our growth. We both know he loves us so much and wouldn't hesitate to give up his life for us if the need arises.

Our granny, on the other hand, never ceased to show us endless love and care. She filled the void of our father's absence perfectly to a great extent that we got used to his absence. Though I wish things played out differently, there was little to nothing I could do about it so I learned to accept my fate as it played out.

After eating, I help Kyle clear the box containing the remains of the pizza and then I tidy up the mess we both made while eating.

Feeling exhausted and tired from the flight,I go to bed not quite long after. I don't bother cleaning up the rest of the apartment like I had earlier intended, bearing it in mind to do it tomorrow.

"Ahhhhh" A loud groan wakes me up from my sleep and I run my hands to my bedside lamp, turning it on before climbing off the bed.

Walking on my tiptoes,I silently creep out of the bed towards the door. A wild thought strikes me. What if it was an intruder?.

I gulp and try to calm my racing pulse as I slowly open the door, taking the first thing that I can find which happens to be a baseball bat. Holding it tightly,I pad down the hallway. The noise had definitely come from the kitchen.

As I slowly climb down the stairs, the place is extremely quiet which only causes fear to ignite inside me and I begin to reconsider running to Kyle's room but then I decide against that, knowing fully well that it would only alert the thief.

"I don't know why Kyle had to get an apartment in such a dumpster like this" I mumble quietly to myself as I continue to walk into the living room.

My eyes catch the attention of a figure by the kitchen area and I turn, slowly walking towards the kitchen, careful not to make any sound as I stand by the corner of the wall separating the kitchen from the living room.

"What a petty thief, stealing from the fridge" I mumble to myself as I stare at the person in front of me, opening the fridge with his back facing me.

I slowly walk towards the person and as soon as I'm close enough, I raise the bat in my hand, about to hit the person from behind when the light comes on.

"What's going on here?" The familiar voice of Kyle says from behind me and the basketball bat in my hand falls on the floor beside my leg.
