Violet I don’t remember walking through the rest of the garden or searching the parking lot for Olive’s Porsche. I couldn’t recall the faces I’d passed or the harsh things they whispered. Their words floated above my head, circling my ears but unable to break through, weaving in and out of my hair until they faded under the golden afternoon sunlight. Somehow, I managed to find Olive’s car, slumping against the side as what happened replayed in my head like a movie—one where I was the star. What I did remember was the first thing I said to Olive when she found me, practically dry heaving against the driver’s side of her car. “What did he do?” She demanded; her smoky eyes lined in dark coal narrowing. Olive didn’t need a name; she was too observant for that. I was an onlooker trapped within my own body as she toted me to the passenger side and helped me in. VioletAfter dinner I had a short conversation with Elijah and Sylvia over beignets. Of course, Sylvia didn’t dare touch the powdered sugar covered dessert. If only I had the same restraint. Apparently, Sylvia was confident the doctors were ready to begin testing pack members for the rogue gene, and she wanted to know if I’d be interested in participating. Only a select few clinics would begin testing, but she thought it might ease my mind to know for sure if I had the rogue gene or not. Elijah had reassured her how confident he was that I didn’t have the gene, but I accepted, nonetheless. Right after, I hopped back into Olive’s Porsche and we took off down the road, venturing to another illustrious looking neighborhood, though this one was a bit smaller.
