Chapter One - Loneliness

Loneliness. It has been proven time and again that most human beings can’t handle being alone well. They need to be around their peers to be able to develop normally.

As werewolves, this was never supposed to be a problem for us. It was known that from the moment you are born, the moon goddess selects you a soulmate.

Your mate is the one person in the world that is perfect for you. They are your other half.

My grandmother told me when I was five years old that the first time you lay your eyes on your mate, the feeling is kinda electric. It’s a moment that you’ll remember for the rest of your life.

She spoke of how it’s like a piece of you has been missing but, you never noticed until then; that I’d know when it happened, for the feelings hit you like a ton of bricks.

Since then I’ve dreamed of the day I turned of age and met my mate, unfortunately my dreams were crushed on my eighteenth birthday.

As the years passed by, my hope to find my mate slowly diminished but I stayed strong just like any Alpha.

Though once in a while, I find myself yearning for a companion, but I immediately shove the thought as quickly as it appeared.

Maybe my grandmother was wrong.

Maybe.

“Alpha”, a voice called, pulling me out of my thoughts.

Raising my head from my desk, I saw my Beta, Henry, looking at me with concern.

"What can I help you with Henry?” I asked.

“It’s time to train the pups. They’re all very eager for their first lesson”, he said.

“Give me a minute to change and I’ll be right there”, I breathed.

He nodded before bowing in respect and exiting my office.

“Time to get your head out of the clouds, Anita, our pack needs us.” I whispered to myself while taking the papers off my desk and locking them in the drawer.

When I finished, I stood up and headed out making sure to also lock my office door.

Walking upstairs, I waved to some of my pack members as they passed by.

I reached my floor and pressed in the passcode, stepping inside.

The alpha quarters took up the whole fourth floor, it was like an apartment.

My parents used to stay here until my father stepped down from his position.

I quickly changed into a pair of black spandex, a sports bra and my Nike’s.

After I was ready, I jogged downstairs and outside to the training field in the back.

Henry already had all the pups lined up and ready.

“Good morning” I greeted, flashing them a smile.

“Morning Alpha Anita”, they all chorused.

“Okay, now you’ve all reached the age where it’s time to start learning to defend yourselves" I started.

"The last thing I ever want is for any of you guys to be in a situation where your life is on the line, but, you never know. What you learn today is strictly for defense. I don’t want you to use this for playing around. Alright?” I explained.

“Yes Alpha” they answered.

“Good, now first we’re going to run. Speed and agility are two key components you’ll need when fighting your opponents. I want you to follow me and stay together”, I instructed them.

When they nodded I started to jog, behind me I could hear their little feet hitting the ground.

I led them into the forest along the trail. I made sure not to go too fast so they were able to keep up.

In our pack we started to train the pups, as we call the young ones, at the age of ten. Since you didn’t turn for the first time until you were twelve, it gave us time to strengthen their human form.

It was vital that both your human and wolf almost matched in strength, and everyone went through training, no matter what your rank was.

We jogged for twenty minutes and then returned to the training field.

The pups looked a little tired which was supposed to be expected; after more sessions, they’ll get used to it.

The rest of the training was spent with me teaching them how to throw punches and kicks.

I had to remind them that the more power they instilled in their attacks, the greater effect it’ll have.

By the time we finished all the pups were on the ground breathing heavily.

“Alpha I’m melting!” George gasped looking at his hand.

“It’s called sweat, George. I promise you’re okay. You guys did good today, great job." I encouraged them. "Your moms and dads are waiting for you in the back” I said laughing as they dragged their little bodies to their parents.

“Good job” Henry spoke, coming over to me.

“Thanks, you too” I breathed taking a seat on the grass.

“Are you okay?” he questioned plopping down next to me.

“Yeah why?” I asked.

“You’ve been spacing out all day” he commented.

“Just thinking. I’m about to turn twenty three years old and I’m still without a mate." I said, sounding worried. "I know the pack is wondering when it’ll happen and so am I. It’s been five years already”, I sighed.

“You’ll find your mate Alpha, I’m sure of it” he told me.

“I hope so. There has never been an Alpha without one, I don’t want to the exception” I whispered.

“You won’t” Henry assured me and I just nodded.

“Alpha Anita!” a voice screamed. I looked up in alert but then relaxed when I saw it was just Caroline.

Caroline Forbes was a blonde ball of sunshine and my best friend. She was the one person that can make me smile even when I’m feeling my worst.

When I had gotten cold feet at my passing down ceremony, she was the one that pushed me on the stage.

She was there the day I had cried my eyes out after my eighteenth birthday when I didn’t feel the pull of my mate.

Through thick and thin, she’s been by my side and I hers.

When she found out that Henry was her mate, I was the first one she told.

Caro even made me the maid of honor at the wedding, she demanded she have.

“Yes Caro?” I answered, standing up.

“We’re going out tonight” Caroline said smiling.

“Hey. How about a hello for your husband?” Henry spoke up smiling at his bubbly wife.

“Sorry baby” she gasped, giving him a kiss.

I was a little envious of my best friend. She had found her mate and was able to experience everything my grandmother described.

“So, what is this about going out?” I asked, gaining back her attention.

“Oh yeah. We haven’t had a girl’s night out in a while because you’ve been busy, and I reallywant to spend some time with my best friend”, Caro whined.

“I have some paperwork to finish including the pack's finance reports” I smirked.

“No, please” she begged, pouting.

“Fine, I’ll go” I groaned, caving in.

“Yay!! Thank you!!” she cheered, tackling me in a huge bear hug.

Or, should I say wolf hug? Lol.

“You're welcome” I laughed.

Truthfully, I actually would love to go out too. I guess for tonight I can push aside everything and just enjoy myself.

Who knows? Maybe I’ll encounter something unexpected.
