Chapter Five: The gift

Four years ago

Alcinder

I had been running for an hour after the confrontation with Velda. I headed home as the night was approaching.

I freshened up and headed for the dining table and found the pack healer sitting there. I am sure that it is my missing wolf.

I sat by the right side of my dad in between my mom and dad acting as if nothing happened.

“Good evening Dad, good evening Mom”. I kissed my mom on her cheek. My aunt and her mate were already seated with her children. I barely spoke with my spooky cousins even though we were in the same age range. Everyone was quiet, behaving like they didn't notice that the prophet wasn't there. My mom gave my hand a gentle squeeze.

“The healer has something to tell you, Alcinder”. My Dad said coldly.

Why couldn't they ever tell me things in private? My issues are always tabled before these fake households.

“We have tried our best to locate your wolf but it is to no avail, we believe the problem is from within you”. The healer announced stoically.

“With this problem, I doubt you will ever find a mate. Or have a Luna”. He continued.

“We can't have an Alpha that isn't a werewolf, or that doesn't have a Luna and who doesn't even have a chance of getting any”. Aunt Velda spoke menacingly.

“Cut the boy some slacks will you!”. My mom ordered and gently patted my hardel.

My Dad hadn't said anything yet. He is usually an observer. Velda looked straight at my father giving him a challenging stare.

“If you want to keep everyone shut in this matter, kindly keep your meetings with the healer in private. We wouldn't want to spoil our dinner with the news of another failure…and”.

“SILENCE!!”. My father ordered Velda to shut up. She looked like she would explode.

“We are one family and MUST support each other. I will not tolerate ANY bicker, side talks, or demeaning comments from anyone. My beta, George, and I, the Alpha of the pure breeds of Alparo will not take it lightly with ANYONE that defies me”.

Velda visibly twitched as my father spoke. She made a move to get up.

“SIT DOWN! Velda”. My father commanded. She stared him straight in the eye. Her mate, that conniving ancient Vampire held her hand and she sat back down.

Avyanna

I was always frightened of sleeping but not tonight. I felt this warmth spreading in my chest. I was optimistic.

I grabbed my laptop and wrote in my journal all that happened today:

“Dear Dad,

Angus attacked me today and asked me to relinquish the title and stand down. I wasn't even interested in being Alpha. I strongly believe being Alpha got you killed. I know you wanted me to fight for that position, but I just can't. Angus spoke to me rudely and called me a murderer. Mother didn't care about what he did which caused Alcinder to beat him up. She slapped me and pushed me down. I don't know why my mother despises me. Dad, Alcinder has been helping me. Elektra's just the best.

I wish you were because I have boy trouble. I think I like Alcinder but he's in high school and doesn't have a wolf, I don't mind. I know! I know! I'm just thirteen. My period started so I guess I'm becoming a woman.

Dad, people keep picking on me because of my skin color and the fact that in the entire family I am the only one that looks like myself. I wish you were here, I miss you every day.

Love

Avvy berry.

I closed my laptop and went to bed. It was past midnight. I tried to sleep but nothing worked, not even counting sheep.

I drifted off into a short slumber, but something kept rubbing my face. It wouldn't stop hovering around me. I pried my eyes open and so a tree branch poked into my room from the window. That was weird and I didn't need anything creepy, it was already one in the morning. I sat up and looked at the tree branch at my window, how did it get in here?.

I tried to lift it off my bed but before touching it, it moved to a standing position. I shifted to the edge of the bed in horror, covering myself with my favorite duvet.

I peeked through the duvet to see the tree branch was still there.

I waved my hand and the tree branch moved in the direction of my hands. I summoned courage and uncovered myself. I crawled towards the tree branch still attached to the tree poking in through my window. I imagined it outside with large flowers on it and waved my hands. Nothing happened. I laughed at my silliness, which must have been one silly illusion.

I turned back to the bed, but then, I heard the tree branch snapping behind me.

I looked back and saw the tree branch outside with our almost dead tree blooming with large white flowers.

Oh-oh!
