Chapter 6

“Speak quietly and don’t scare the crying child.”

She continued to speak. “I don’t know what your yelling just now was meant to convey to me. I don’t want to know. I’m here today to talk to you about the child. If you want to do a paternity test, I can take him immediately. There is no money, I will not let him starve.”

“Also, today is your only chance to get your son. If you don’t take him, my children and I will never come back to find you. I want nothing to do with you.”

After she finished speaking, she turned around to stroke the child, but the man forcefully pulled her to him. She was caught off guard. Vera didn’t have any time to react, and fell into the man’s arms, hitting his sturdy chest.

Frozen for a moment, she immediately recovered and stood upright.

The man’s anger was even stronger this time, but instead of shouting loudly, he squeezed hard on Vera\'s wrist. He squeezed it hard.

“Please let go of my hand. You’re hurting me.”

“Nobody can take my child away. You\'re just a tool for surrogacy. If you send the child back to me for money, you’re not qualified to be his mother.”

At this moment, it felt like a thousand arrows pierced through her heart. He was right, she was selling her own child.

The man relaxed slightly. Vera took the opportunity to throw pull her hand back.

“I must first make sure that the child is mine, and then negotiate terms with you.”

After the man finished speaking, he went straight to the child, but she finally blocked the man’s progress.

  “What are you doing?”

  “Taking the child away.”

“No, no. Until an agreement is reached, no one is allowed to take the child away.”

Vera spoke firmly. It wasn’t that she was afraid that the man would not give her money after he took the child away. All of a sudden, she felt unwilling to give him up.

“I want to do a paternity test.”

“The paternity test uses hair. Take him to the bathroom, cut off his hair and return the child to me.”

The man stopped talking, but took the child to the bathroom according to Vera\'s intention.

Ten minutes later, the man walked out of the bathroom and returned the child before striding away.

She breathed a sigh of relief, reluctantly holding the child in her arms. ”Baby, I’m really sorry.”

When she agreed to the surrogacy arrangement, Vera never expected to develop such a deep affection for the child. Now she was suffering.

If it wasn’t for the debt she needed to pay, if it wasn’t for money, she would raise him herself.

Looking at the sleeping baby and his cute face, she felt the urge to just leave. However, just as she started to pack up the child’s things, her aunt Qin Lan called in.

  “Vera, how are things going?”

  “Auntie, I think...”

Vera Qin wanted to say that she had changed her mind. Then she heard other people’s voices on the background.

“It’s been almost a year since my husband passed away, and you still have not compensated us. We need the money.”

“That’s right, give us the money quickly and don’t make any excuses. You said you don’t have any money? What, are we better off than you?”

Vera Qin could tell it was a family member of the deceased.

In the nearly one year since the car accident, Vera Qin has never had a chance to see the family of the deceased. This is the first time they have come to pursue a claim. Though it was a huge sum of money, she knew that they had given her plenty of time to produce it.

“Vera, come back if he doesn’t want the child. We’ll think of other ways.”

“Aunt, tell them not to worry. I will definitely give them an answer soon.”

Under these circumstances, any thoughts she had of keeping her child seemed unrealistic.

The next night, the man came again. As per his policy, the room must be dark. The moment he pushed the door open, Vera asked him in a low voice. “Have the results come out?” She was eager to know, but she didn’t want to wake the child.

The man found the sofa, sat down, and then spoke.

“The results will come out in three days.”

The man’s voice was not angry, but it was still cold.

Vera walked slowly to him. She was familiar with the environment here, and she could accurately find the man’s position without seeing him.

“Just talk about it, do you want to negotiate terms with me?”

Vera Qin felt that men would not come here for no reason.

“Let’s talk about your conditions first, you can’t just need the balance after going through the trouble of coming here.”

The man’s obvious sarcasm made Vera Qin uncomfortable.

“We said at the beginning that the remuneration for having a boy should be tripled. At that time, the deposit was given to me 500,000, and another 2.5 million was enough. I don’t intend to ask for more.”
