forced politeness masked my turmoil as I struggled to find words.

"Beth? It's been a while," I managed to say, though my tone betrayed the lingering pain.

"I know I messed up, but I needed to see you. Can we talk?" She uttered.

The internal conflict within me intensified. My desire for closure warred with the lingering hurt. Part of me wanted to return inside and slam the door shut, shutting out the painful memories, while another part yearned for an explanation from her. At least, just to hear what the bitch would say.

"Talk about what? Answer me, talk about what exactly?" My eyes narrowed while my voice taut with suppressed anger.

"I'm really sorry, and I'm here to ask for your forgiveness. Please, kindly find a space in your heart to forgive me."

"Forgive you? Do you have any idea what you did, Beth? You betrayed not only our friendship but my trust."

"Willow, I messed up. I never meant to hurt you. I can't change the past, but I need you to understand how sorry I am
