CHAPTER 19

Jealousy

His eyes made her adjust in her seat. She scrambled for what to say.

“I just think calling someone sweet is odd. People can’t be seen as sweet.”

“Why not?” he asked, “People are called sweet all the time,” he protested.

“Alright. Call people whatever you like. I can’t understand it anyway,” she said, taking another bite of her cake.

“Why not?” he asked, then pointed at his coffee, “Sweet,” then at his cake, “Sweet,” then at Emerald, “Sweet,” he said and she found herself speechless.

“See? That wasn’t hard,” he took a sip of his coffee.

“Is that so…” Emerald laughed awkwardly, “It is odd to be compared to food. It is not as though people can be eaten,” she said. She did not understand what this conversation was even about.

“They could,” he said, the mirth in his eyes, telling her he was joking, but she could swear she saw something else when he said that. His words caused Emerald to pause mid swallow.
