HEATHER

Ten years later…

“Dr. Heather. We have an emergency. Please come to the hospital. Dr. Fisher needed your medical attention,” someone called the other line.

I was about to ask, but the line went dead.

Dustan? What about Dustan? We were fine earlier. He even drove me here when my kids said their nanny, Miss Candy, had returned to their home to get some things. With no adult to guard them, I rushed to my apartment and stayed there until the nanny returned.

“Hello?”

I tried to call the number again, but no one would pick up the phone.

I bit the inside of my cheeks. This couldn’t be!

My heart was pounding in my chest as I wondered what on earth had happened to Dustan. That was the moment my attention shifted from my kids to the phone.

What will I do now? I just could not leave them. But duty calls. Besides, Dustan was my co-doctor and my boyfriend.

“Mommy?” Avery asked, her curls blocking her eyesight. She was easily shy. “What’s wrong?”
