Sixty One
She did not see Matthew running towards her with a worried frown, trying to catch up. She found no horses in the stables and even the pigs were saved. All the animals were safe, but the feed had not been moved, since the tractor was still trying to put out the fire.
Realizing that she was about to lose everything she had built and all the memories her grandfather had left her, she fell to her knees and sobbed. She was losing everything. Her house would soon be gone, so would the stables and pigsties, even the mill would be lost.
How would she feed her animals? What was she going to do? Suddenly someone dragged her to her feet and pulled her away from the buildings, running towards the river. Men were screaming at others to get clear of the inevitable.
They stopped only when they were sure they were out of danger and Kara turned to see her house and stables set on fire. The water had not been enough to save her home

The moment they crossed the river she knew that something was not what she had thought. There seemed to be a lot of traffic on the road to her ranch. Kara urged her horse into a gallop, knowing that Matthew would keep up. As they reached the yard, she saw people moving around and cleaning up. Most of the debris had been cleared away and removed, and people she had seen in the midst of the fire battle were working on rebuilding her buildings. Close by, several bales of feed lay, along with a few stacks of wood, pig feed, bricks and other hardware. While she watched in stunned silence, a truck with another load of wood came up the drive. Sunday morning Kara awoke slowly when the sun shone through the drapes in her borrowed room. She had been working hard labor the whole week to get things running again; despite her men trying to lighten her load in their overprotective way like they had done since she had returned to her ranch after the accident. With all the help she had received, the stables were finished and the vegetable garden planted and ready for spring to bring it to life once more. Matthew had worked with her the whole week, though the other faces changed regularly since the ranchers sorted things out on their own ranches and others came to help. Brad had even showed up after four in the afternoons. He had also spent the whole Saturday working with them, teasing that he did not need to go to the gym for that week, at least and that this was not what he had meant when he had suggested a holiday. Kara was ready by seven Saturday night. She was grateful for all the help she had received thus far on the ranch and the number of helpers had gradually started to dwindle as the shell of the pigsty and barn had been put up. She had got the idea to have a barn dance, once it was finished to thank everyone, she had already selected a steer and a boar to be slaughtered for the occasion and James had been happy to pass the word around. The party had been planned for next week Saturday and everyone had offered to bring something when they phoned her up. Kara was exhausted when she got home, it was late. She had not seen Matthew that day either, he had been gone when she woke up, so she started to move her horses back to her ranch. Maybe she had overstayed her welcome.
