#32 Confessions

"Bothering me? Nothing's bothering me."

I force a smile on my face just as the smile on hers drops.

"I'm a good listener," she insists.

"Drop it." My voice is harsher than I intended it to be.

She looks away, her gaze turning to the tips of her toes, but not before I see the hurt reflected in her eyes.

"I thought you considered me your friend." Her voice is low, and there's a sheen of misty tears on her eyelashes.

I rub the back of my neck, cursing myself inwardly.

Hugging her close, I place my forefinger underneath her chin and lift it up.

I see the unshed tears more clearly, and feel like a worm.

"You are my friend. It's just that there are things I can't tell you right now."

She doesn't say a word, but looks at me steadily. I can't hold her frank gaze without being tempted to bare my soul.

"Well I suppose I can tell you some of it. I lied to my alpha so I could be with you. Don’t ask me what the lie was, I can’t share that with you. At least, not right now.”
