When we arrived back at the cabin, the boys had dinner ready, so we quickly ate and then I headed to my room to have a shower before everyone arrived. Stepping back into my room with a towel wrapped around my hair and another around my body, I stopped dead in my tracks when I saw a man sitting on my bed.
He had blond hair that fell to his shoulders, blue eyes like the ocean, and a strong, tall frame. His shirt wrapped perfectly around his large arms. He was hot! He stood with his hands held up as if surrendering. I don’t know why I didn’t scream for the others to help, but I felt a sense of calm wash over me, so I stood rooted to the floor.
“I do not mean to frighten you, Ryan. I am here because I need help, and you are the only one I believe can help me. Will you hear me out, please?” I couldn’t speak, so I just nodded. He took three steps closer to me. There was only a foot of distance between us. His scent hit me hard—he smelled of wildflowers and
“WE ARE NOT HUMAN, BOY!” the king shouted, rising to his feet.“Watch your tone and how you speak to my cousin, king,” I sneered, coming to Chase’s defense. How dare he yell at my cousin, the old prick! King or not, he would not speak to my cousin like that.“You should not speak of matters you know nothing about, little witch. Be seen, not heard,” he shot back. I stood, fists balled at my sides, ready to give him a piece of my mind when I felt Kai place his hand on my shoulder as if to sit me down. The king had a smile on his face like he thought Melakai could settle me. I shrugged his hand off my shoulder with a vicious twitch.“Don’t fucking touch me, douche bag. You’re on my shit-list at the moment.” A look of hurt passed over his face, but he quickly gathered himself and masked it. I pointed my finger at the smirking king.
“I’m so sorry, Jackson, I didn’t know.” I grabbed his hand and held it, giving it a squeeze.“It’s okay, Ryan.” His words had no conviction in them. They were hollow.“How many treaties have there been?”“Two. The first was with my father, Randall, your grandfather, and the fae king. The second was signed by Randall, my father, your father, and the fae king. The one we are trying to discuss now will be the third.”“How come a new one was never signed when you became Alpha?”“Because your father helped me protect my people from other supes, who wished to challenge me for my throne. It is my birthright to be the alpha of my people. When the time came for me to sit on the throne, I had grown strong, and that was thanks to the aid of your father. He trained me and taught me how
After the king had won the battle against the queen’s people and banished them to their lands, he went in search of the child once again only to finally find the child and realize that the child had no powers of any kind. She was as human as they came, and the king went about his business, confident that she would live and die, as all weak humans did, not knowing that this human would pass on the power she inherited through her children. And so it came to pass that the queen’s daughter gave birth to twin girls, but only one child could receive the power of both fae and witch: the child with the purest heart received those powers.” I had been listening carefully to his tale, making sure I had the details straight, and so after he finished I sat there quietly, trying to piece together the story. Then it suddenly hit me. I jumped to my feet.“Wait—so you’re telling me that my mother is the
“You saw, didn’t you?” He tilted his head to the side, a look of confusion on his face.“Saw what, mi amor?”“What my mother did to me. You saw it all, didn’t you?” A look of pain, anger and heartbreak crossed his face before he hung his head in shame. He didn’t need to reply—his face and body language gave me all the answers I needed. I jumped to my feet and couldn’t stop the words from pouring out of my mouth.“You gutless, spineless, son of a bitch!” I screamed at him. He jumped to his feet and tried to grab me, but I side-stepped him and continued my rant. “You have the nerve to stand before me and claim to want to protect me from harm, when you let a monster abuse me for years when you could have saved me from all of it. You just stood by and watched he
I went to sit on the day bed right by the window; it was such a beautiful sight to see the snow falling and watch the ground be blanketed with white. The sun was out, and there was a slight breeze outside. It was a beautiful day. It helped raise my spirits a bit. Just as I leaned back on the pillows and closed my eyes, there was a knock at my door. Not bothering to open my eyes I told whoever it was to come in.“Hey, squirt, we need to talk to you.” I opened my eyes immediately to see both my cousins standing in the doorway; I waved them over and told them to have a seat. Chase closed the door and sat on the edge of the bed while Alex leaned on the wall beside the window.“What’s up, guys?” I asked, curious as to what they had to say.“About last night…” Alex began but I cut him off.“Don’t cry over spilled milk, Alex. I&rs
After the boys had left my room, I went through my bag and pulled out my favorite book, Night Flame, by Catherine Hart. I sat back in my chair by the window, prepared to spend the rest of the afternoon reading when a shiver ran down my spine. I jumped out of my seat and spun around to see a pair of yellow eyes glowing in the corner of the room. As those eyes drew closer to me, I realized that it was Simon, the fae that came to warn me the other day.“Hi,” I said, keeping my voice low so the others wouldn’t hear.“Hello, Ryan, may I speak with you, please?”“Sure, hang on one sec, okay?” I dashed over to the other side of the bed and grabbed my iPod so I could plug it into the speaker. With that going, if anyone went past my room, they wouldn’t hear us talking. As I set the iPod to play, the song that started was one of my favorites, Frankie J’s song, “O
“You have no right to speak to her like that, Stevie, and you know it. What you just said was a low blow and uncalled for. What the fuck has gotten into you in these past couple of days? This is not you.” I looked up to see Chase on his feet, chastising Stevie for her behavior.“I am finally seeing clearly, cousin. Maybe you need to open your eyes and see what is going on around you. We are on the brink of war with the fae, and all you and Alex are concerned with is coddling my sister. If she chooses not to side with her people, then she does not belong here.” Fuck that hurt, to hear my own sister say that I didn’t belong. I was trying so hard to fight the tears that were threatening to fall.“What are you saying?” Alex asked Stevie.“She’s saying that if I don’t agree with her sealing the fae realm off, and start obeying her every command as my
I screamed as soon as his fangs pierced my skin. He had a death grip on my head. I couldn’t move. I heard my cousins shouting out my name, but I couldn’t answer them. My eyes rolled, searching for help, and landed on my sister, who stood by, watching Randall drink, a smile on her face. The look of satisfaction on her face broke my heart. She wouldn’t have to wait long for my death; I could feel my head getting light and my eyes getting heavy. I could feel the pull of death, and I welcomed it. Just as I convinced myself to let go, there was a whoosh of air, and Randall was gone.I couldn’t get my eyes to focus, and I was drifting in and out of consciousness. I felt an arm at the back of my head and then one under my legs. Someone was carrying me. I was trying to fight to open my eyes, but they refused. The harder I fought, the faster the darkness came, and eventually I couldn’t fight any longer and darkness won.I could feel the heat of the
