Chapter 39Aurora's POV My lashes fluttered open as my eyes darted around, searching the room like something was missing. Matteo's musky scent was still fresh in the room and I remembered how he whisked me into his car in a state of frenzy. I had to speak to my uncle and tell him how his quest to rebuild the Camorra nearly made me lose my life. Sofia rested her head beside me but there was no trace of Giselle. I tried to raise my head from the pillow to be sure that she was around but it felt heavy, causing me to wonder if I was actually shot on my head and not my stomach. The door from the toilet creaked open and Giselle showed in looking tired with dark patches under her eyes. Her hair was tousled roughly though it looked like she had made some efforts in straightening it. "Gi.. Giselle.." I called and she scurried towards me as her eyes shone with relief. "You're finally awake," She cried happily, "Thank goodness! I have to call Matteo now," She chirped and reached for
Chapter 40Aurora's POV "My aunt?" I was exasperated. None of them replied to my question as they both peered at each other like they hadn't seen each other in months. Well, they actually hadn't seen each other in years and I wasn't sure that my uncle had ever mentioned anything concerning his sister. "Someone should explain to me what is going on!" I snapped, angry that I was bound to the bed by the drip passing through my veins. "I'll explain everything to you, but you need to relax please." Uncle Lorenzo replied to make me calm but I wasn't having it. I didn't even know whether to be sad or happy that Giselle was my aunt. That should be the reason why I felt the strong urge to protect her and Sofia. She was my fvcking relative! "What are you doing here, Giselle? Did you know that she was your niece?" Giselle blanched at his question and pushed forward. My eyes caught the sight of Sofia's bag and I hoped that she wouldn't come and see what was going on. "I didn't know a
Chapter 41Aurora's POV I shared a glance with my uncle as Matteo gave that piece of information. We had to act fast and help the man that was held captive by Matteo but I lacked ideas on how to do that. "That's really good to hear," I replied nervously and chewed my lips. Matteo scanned my face intently then placed his hand under my jaw. "You don't look as bright as I expected you to be. Aren't you happy that the man who tried to shoot you is in our custody?" "Sure, I'm happy." I replied and put on the brightest smile I could then I held his hand. "Thank you for being very concerned about me." He nodded in response then got up and walked to my uncle. "Who are you to her?" Uncle Lorenzo asked and I shook my head, pleading with him not to ask unnecessary questions. He was in Matteo's territory for Christ sake! Did he think that he could run his mouth as freely as he wanted? The fact that Matteo was being nice and calm with him was because he was my uncle, else, he'd have lo
Chapter 42Matteo's POV Her question unnerved me as I wondered how she got to know that I had a history with Ginevra. It was a part of my life that disgusted me till date and I hated talking about it. "Can we not talk about it tonight and focus on your healing so that you can come home with me," I replied, ignoring her question. She nodded but her pursed lips and lowered lashes showed that she wasn't happy with my response. For sure I would tell her about it, but not yet. Not when our relationship was still on a shallow level and she had the tendency of leaving me if she found out the truth. ********** I watched Aurora change her clothes with Giselle aiding her. Her wound still hurt, but for the past few days, the only thing that left her lips constantly were complaints on how tired she was of staying in the hospital, and how she wanted to feel the softness of her bed again. Since I couldn't say no to her pleas, I had to speak with Doctor Luca who discharged her and now I wa
Chapter 43Matteo's POV Some minutes later I was driving like a crazy person to my club where the torture room was situated. As a Capo I had to be calm at all times but the fact that someone had found a way to intrude into the room which was security tight got me worried. I arrived and parked recklessly, storming into the club and ignoring the greetings from the few workers that cared to greet me. They should have known by the stoic expression of my face and my clenched jaw that I could kill in the blink of an eye. Francesco stood at the door, his arms folded and his eyes glistening with disappointment. Of course I couldn't hurt him because he had been a loyal soldier and he would have been my best friend if I allowed myself to be less anti-social. "Where is he?" I rumbled, my voice dangerously low. Other people would have flinched at the tenacity of my tone but he was used to it. "He's been covered with a white linen. We were waiting for you to come before burning him," He
Chapter 44Aurora's POV I decided to take a walk along the lawn later that evening, sneaking out of the house like I did some time ago because I didn't want anyone to see me, especially Matteo. He was acting like a strict chaperone which I never had, as my uncle was liberal with me but then it was becoming annoying and tiring since I couldn't do as I pleased. Ilaria was the only one who knew that I went out since she helped me to distract the guard who was at the fence. The same place I'd escaped from to watch Matteo's sparring match. Though she was scared, I managed to convince her and she listened. I enjoyed the evening breeze which made my hair fly in different directions around my shoulders, some strands covering my face as well. I tucked the straying strands behind my ears and trudged ahead till I got to a spot that had a jaw-dropping sight. How didn't anyone show me such a place? There was a small flowing stream with water, but what marveled me was how the turquoise b
Chapter 45Aurora's POV His question nearly threw me aback but I took a deep breath and counted from one to ten before thinking of a good reply. Of course, there were several things I was hiding from him. The fact that I'd come with a mission to end his father's lineage or the fact that Giselle was my aunt, and I slowly entertained feelings that weren't supposed to be and ended up falling for him which in turn caused me to change my plans. "Matteo, I.." His dark stare stopped me abruptly as I lowered my lashes, pondering on what to say to him. I'd acted out of line and if I wasn't his girlfriend, he might have locked me up and treated me like he'd do to other offenders. "I don't want lies, Aurora. I want the truth." It wasn't possible for me to say the truth, at least not yet. Matteo would hate me for the rest of his life and I wouldn't be able to take it. "I'll tell you the truth, but I'm truly sorry for raising my hands on you. My parents were murdered when I was a chi
Chapter 46Aurora's POV "You killed him?" I stood up and paced around his room frantically. "How were you even able to do that?" I continued. "Someone helped me but I won't tell you who it was." He replied shrewdly and moved away from the window so that our eyes could meet. He wasn't the uncle I knew anymore. The man that has raised me would never soil his hands or hurt others, he even discouraged me from coming here, yet, he committed murder and didn't have the slightest trace of remorse. "You've changed, Uncle Lorenzo," I whispered and he shrugged, tucking his hands into the pocket of his shorts. "Don't make it a big deal, Aurora. He was almost dead, I just finished him up so that our secrets won't be exposed. Have you thought of what Matteo will do when he discovers who you are and what you came here for?" He hollered and I flinched, reality dawning on me over and over again. "I've thought about it, uncle and soon I'll have to tell him the truth," I blurted. He fixed a
