The clock had already chimed midnight when Anna decided she couldn’t stay up any longer. With a long sigh, she burrowed herself under the sheets and switched off the lamp beside her. Though the night was dark and the curtains closed, Anna could see every outline of the dark room, through her advanced senses.

She could hardly stop thinking about William, her family. The hopes that had been dashed when she accepted Damon’s offer had sprung up again.

Sleep came slowly for her and she was halfway through drifting off when she heard the door open. Her eyes opened at once and her mind instantly became alert. She raised her head only to find golden orbs glaring at her.

Her heart skipped; it was Damon. What was he doing here?

“Damon,” she said his name and fell silent, the words not coming out of her mouth. She stared at him, her anxiety rising gradually until he finally spoke.
