Chapter Twenty-Three

Claire sat on her bed as she brushed her hair. When she was younger, her mother would brush her hair with a hundred strokes every night saying that it will make it healthier. Since then, it became her habit to do so—except for counting up to one hundred.

Once she was satisfied, she stood up to place her hairbrush on her bedside table and switch off the lights. Then, she positioned herself under her comforter and closed her eyes. However, the moment she did so, her phone rang loudly.

“Ugh”, she groaned but she stood back up anyway. She walked towards her desk where her phone was placed after glancing at the clock. It was ten minutes before midnight. “Who the heck would call me at this hour?”

Even Jess, her best friend, never called her when it was this late and would wait until the next day instead. Impatiently, she grabbed her phone and the light from the screen made her squint her eyes. She didn’t bother looking at the caller
