“Hey,” I said, smiling when I saw Arturo walking inside the room.

The man didn’t know how thankful I was for having him in my life.

For once in my life, I was feeling home, secure, and safe. My husband, the man who I was initially afraid of marrying was the man who saved me from the darkness that I lived in.

Being an only child, and Eli, my step mother, never giving my father a child, I was forced to live under the shadow of their darkness and anger.

The pain that they inflicted, the anger, the screaming, my tears.
