There was a long awkward silence as everyone avoided our gaze. I didn’t feel comfortable because I couldn’t tell exactly what Damon was thinking. Was he on their side or mine?

“I expect answers to my questions when I ask them,” he said in a harsher voice that made a few of the maids flinch.

“The cook was just telling us what she heard, my Lord. I don’t know where she heard it from,” the maid who ran into us said, obviously trying to shift the blame from herself.

“Go ahead,” he said to the cook, turning his attention to her. “Tell me what you were saying just before I walked in.”

“I didn’t…” she stammered, looking everywhere but at me.

“Let me juggle your memory. You were saying my mate was a harem girl who deserves to be put to death for not being a virgin,” he snapped and I recoiled on the inside. Why did he have to be so raw?

Seeing she had no way to come out of this, the cook fell to my feet and began to beg.
