“What do you plan on doing?” Mario asked, pinching the bridge of his nose, knowing well enough that not only were we going to have to convince Lea and Ezra to actually talk before getting along, but now I had the issue of mom. Had I known that he would be coming here, I would have managed to talk to her, but it seemed to me that fate often has its own plans with me.

“I don’t know,” I said, choosing to be honest. “A part of me understands her concern more than anything. She has risked more than one should to ensure that we are safe and that no one harms us. But another part knows that this is not something that I have to be speaking to her about. The two of us are well aware of the responsibility that I hold in my position, and she of all people knows that it comes with its own dangers.”
