Neither of them mentioned the incident in the garden afterward, but not for lack of Daniel trying. He had tried on three separate occasions over the next two days to bring it up - just to make sure Beth was all right - but she had steered clear of it and held her head high, putting herself to work so industriously that he felt guilty interrupting her. How did she do that? The final attempt, he ended up slinking back into the study where his father had left him messages from the other packs to look over, but he abandoned the pile shortly afterward to look out the window.
